I enjoyed listening to Rhett's presentation and appreciating the depth and dimensions of his clearly stated problem and proposed solutions. As he referenced in his discussion, the topic spans several important fields of inquiry: the law and child advocacy lawyers, sociology, psychology, interventional counseling and church. What he advocates and defends is a society that is more focused on understanding the problem and integrating the varied fields of support to implement solutions. Thanks for sharing. Excellent work, Rhett Rizzo!

Irving is commenting on his own situation -- writers were thought to be avoiding work, living in the past, prone to drinking. Rip becomes the center of attention when returns, eg he is entertaining and this situation is analogous to Irving becoming the first American to make a living from writing. Like other Irving works, this one is based on German folktales, specifically one titled "Peter Kraus." Irving writes during a period when Gothic themes are popular and though more lighthearted than "Legend of Sleepy Hollow", RVW includes ghosts and the death of his wife. His first name, "Rip" directly references death -- "R.I.P." If you interpret the plot as Rip leaving town and waiting for his annoying wife to die then this Gothic story pivots on a welcome death. The Revolution which Rip sleeps through is another kind of death; death of the old ways and the beginning of a more industrious and money-focused era. The death of one era creates new opportunities and priorities just as the death of Rip's wife allows his return. Key to understanding the significance of this story is the timing. Irving lives in a brand new country at a time when ghost stories were popular in Europe. America has few ghosts of the calibre and legendary status of the European ones so Irving uses Henry Hudson's crew and other uniquely American legends.
