I have this on CD and it's the oldest CD I own. No skips after 40 years.

First trumpet Bernard Adelstein was easily the equal of any in the world and better than most. Adolph Herseth gets so much adoration, and rightfully so, but Adelstein is his equal, and deserves the same respect. He was amazing. It was he who played the brilliant first trumpet in the Minneapolis Symphony under Dorati for all of those wonderful Mercury recordings from the 50s. He joined Szell's Cleveland Orchestra around 1960...not exactly....and helped reshape the overall sound of that orchestra.

This is a masterpiece. The entire Nutcracker is, but this part in particular just touches the heart and soul. And it isn't even in my language!
@MagicMusicBTGАй бұрын
This is not a part of Nutcracker. In fact, a ballet rarely uses a song that has lyrics. Edit: This is a duet from Tchaikovsky's Pique Dame opera, if you wonder.

Since nobody has done it, I will write the lyrics to the poem: 1. In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone, snow had fallen, snow on snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago 2.Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain, heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed the Lord almighty, Jesus Christ. 3.Enough for him whom cherubim worship night and day, a breastful of milk and a manger of hay. Enough for him whom angles fall down before, the ox and ass and camel which adore 4.Angles and archangels may have gathered there, cherubim and seraphim thronged the air, but only his mother, in her maiden bliss, worshiped the beloved with a kiss. 5.What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb, if I were a wise man I would do my part, yet what can I give him, give my heart Author: Christina Gerogina Rossetti born in 1830 and schooled at home

Such great understanding of the various voices "singing" with each other, like if they have their own "character" through tone, dynamics and tambour. So carefully done!
