They fixed the green tint that ruins a lot of the shots on the BluRay version, especially those with a lot of visible skies and snow (4:25). But overall the 4K grade is way too "neutral" looking. So much of the warmth and otherworldliness has been removed with how drastically they've reduced saturation and brightened up some scenes. A lot of it looks like it belongs as un-graded making-of/ behind the scenes b-roll rather than the actual film.

Thank you for this comparison. I had the original extended version DVD open on the same screen to compare. It seems the new remaster is "closer" to the original, however, the colour grading still appears a bit off to me. Hobbiton's greens are less lush and saturated (a colder green tone biasing toward blue, rather than the DVD's warm tone which biased toward yellow), and the colour of the Hobbit boy's hair at 2:21 in the above comparison appears a dark chestnut colour, almost black, whereas in the original DVD it's more of a reddish brown. Overall the slight reddish tint in faces that is present in the original DVD appears absent from the remastered version (at least based on this video, as I currently only own the DVD version of the films). Of course, I believe the remastered version attempted to unify the colour grade between the Hobbit and LOTR films, but there's something to be said for the nostalgia of the original grade. 😄
