It is my understanding that Alt 4ED only ever was made in Starter Decks (the cards have no inner seal over them either). But I will definitely double check the cards opened and the wrapper, plus the other two that came with it. It should say printed by the "United States Playing Card Company" on the pack. I'll update if it was, Good thought though!

@@packingthegathering1260 You probably know more about it than me. They just looked a little different on the back. I’ve had an Alt 4th starter, but it was pre-opened. It had all the cards in it though. Cards have a more waxy finish. Regular 4th have a more dry matt feel.

Reverse damage and kismet bring back memories. I used to play kismet, stasis, and the thing to bounce islands. I'm sure it was total fun to play against.

There were a couple different bounce cards I liked to use but most came around during the Urza's Saga block. Before that, in the early days, Boomerang is the only one I can think of right now and it is single target, so the Stasis itself at the end of your opponents turn.

I’ve wanted to do something like this for a while as well. Not to the extent of all the statistics of prices and such that he gets into, but I love the idea of opening up booster boxes, and doing mock drafts. Something to think about.

I realize that the stats are not for everyone, it's my own special brand of OCD that not everyone shares. Even if you're not into the data, I hope watching the openings and seeing the set completed on screen is enjoyable.

Unstable Mutation was not in alpha, beta, unlimited. The card you were thinking of was Ancestral Recall.

Unfortunately, my career started with 4ED, and when I dug earlier only Revised was available to me. So all I ever knew of was Unstable Mutation

Tots valid Q. While 4ED is not my most favored set, nor is it the most sexy of Vintage sets, it was where I started playing the game. So it holds a special place in my heart. It is also the first set I decided to put together when I restarted set collecting about 5 years ago, so I felt it was due some love. I do plan to expand out to other sets once I complete 4th.

Thanks for the support! 7ED would be so cool. That's the introduction of foils era, so they will be super rare but also super valuable and a collector piece. I happen to own a 7th Edition Foil Counter Spell. Have it slabbed up and on display on my work desk. I've toyed with the idea of doing that set as well. GL on your pulls!

i completed this set when it was new, had whole thing but ivroy tower for the longest time, got a couple revised ones, tried to trade, but noone would take revised for 4th for some reason, eventually completed it

Man, I loved cards like Ivory Tower, The Rack & Cursed Rack. The tempo of games back then was so slow those cards had a bigger impact on games. Hand size was not manipulated like it is today. I still play 8 Rack as one of my Vintage decks.

I feel like in a mono green deck you could have a good chance. 4x Llanowar Elves, some Wild Growths and a Sol Ring or Mana Vault and you could pull it off.

What did you use to animate your intro?

It was a combo. I used photoshop and real packs to get images, then removed the background. I then used an AI cartoonifier using the images to make new images. I then used Adobe After Effects to animate. Bought a custom font and then merged it all in DaVinci Resolve. I knew none of these before I started, all KZbin "how-to" vids.

4th edition was when Wizard of the Coast screwed all over by removing Power 9 after Unlimited and Duals was gone too after Revised Edition. Was an complete letdown.

Back in the day it seemed like pulling a mana vault wasn’t as special as pulling a shivan, royal or birds. I never used the card but now realize the importance of mana vs playing in 95 when you’re only 16

I've been thinking this for a few months since I found out Mana Vault was the most expensive card in the set. I never remembered it being that popular in the 90's, but I also couldn't say for certain if that was just a me thing. I suppose I could just look it up in the old price guides.

I totally agree with you. My sights were on flying creatures, the bigger the better. It wasn't until I discovered Revised that I started putting a Sol Ring and a Mana Vault in every deck.

I looked it up in my copy of Dec '95 Scrye magazine, the 4ED was $5 Upper and $4 Median. Both Unlimited and Revised had the same values. However, an Alpha was $12 and a Beta was $10 lol

@@packingthegathering1260 By Fall of '96 the fourth edition leaders were Shivan Dragon ($10-$18), Royal Assassin ($9-$15), Ball Lightning ($8 - $12), Nightmare ($7 - $12) and Lord of the Pit ($7 - $10). By Fall of '98 it was Shivan Dragon ($15), Royal Assassin ($12), Ball Lightning ($12) and a four way tie at $8 (Armageddon, Howling Mine, Mahamoti Djinn & Wrath of God). This matches up with my recollection of the top cards in the set. Mana Vault was only $3.50 in Fall of '98.

Ya, the Mana Vault didn't come in to popularity for a bit. It was still in 5th but I think it was even after that. We also wouldn't see another printing until either the Kaladesh Inventions or the Ultimate Masters printings, can recall which came first.

Ya, lol, but what could I do? Reseal the packs and try again? I just chalk it up to a learning opportunity. I guess if you are clever enough or know the cards well enough, that half second flash might enable you to guess it.

My brother's Shivan and Nightmare was solid staples he had that I was envious of for the longest time. With no job, it was slim pickins each week using our allowance. So it made more sense (to the kid in me) at the time to buy packs. I'm loving that Rando Pack effect.

I started in Revised and played for a couple of years. I got back into it this January and wish I had never stopped. I still have my old cards and built a Cube for my play group of cards Fifth Edition or earlier.

I sure can't. Store front is not complete yet and probably won't be until I have sufficient overstock of the cards to warrant completing the setup. That said, it'll probably not contain sealed product until I have completed the full set and would then be liquidating my left over boosters.

I loved back then the clear setup: Starterdecks had 20 basic lands, booster none. In mh3 playbooster i had sometimes 3-4 lands, thats too much.

I do! But no sealed product. Whenever I get a 4ED sealed product I check the manufacturer location to see if I hit the lottery. In my 30 years of MTG travels I have only ever come across six Alt 4ED cards (that I know of), I have an Ornithopter, Steal Artifact, 2x Armageddon Clock and 2x Fireball. But I can't remember where they originally came from.

Sylvan Library would be nice. Back in '95 I used to have a GW deck that ran only one copy (all I could get my hands on) with Spirit Links to offset the cost of cards.

I’m doing the same at the moment, auditing my collection on excel. There are so many rares for fourth edition that I don’t think I’m going to push for a full set, but I’m not too far off a Planeshift set.

If you are going to plunge in the deep end of inventorying your collect, I'd suggest better apps than Excel. Look into Deckbox.org or EchoMTG.com as great inventory tools. I am old school so I like Deckbox better, but EchoMTG definitely has a newer modern look and feel. I'm only using one in my vids for this one series b/c I needed more manual control. But I have tens of thousands of cards so Deckbox/EchoMTG made more sense for the whole collection.

So I purchased a Revised Starter off ebay back in 2010ish for 60 dollars and gave it to my best friend a few years ago to open. He pulled 2 dual lands from the starter, I could not believe it. I got into magic too back in the summer of 1995 when I was 15/16 years old. I remember seeing revised and unlimited sitting on the shelf in my local magic shop and thinking I just can't afford to pay the few extra dollars per pack or starter when I can get 4th for normal retail prices. I only bought revised boosters a few times. Wish I would of purchased some unlimited back then bought had no idea what big cards were in those sets back in the day. A friend of mine that had gotten into the card game in 93 had a binder with the whole power 9 set on black borders. I remember seeing this in 96 or 97. I thought he was a god for having those cards

I had the same situation going on. In 1995, I would be spending my meager allowance on Fallen Empire and Fourth, then later Chronicles b/c I really couldn't afford much else. Wasn't until I was post highschool and had my first job that I started to buy more and at that point my attention turned to Revised.
