Does this process affects the surface finishing? I mean in service manual for the engine I'm working on they said I have to do nitriding on the crankshaft after grinding the bearings. The question is do they need to be re-polished after ion nitriding? Do they change their diameter?

Plasma Nitriding is the last treatment. When you take the parts out of the chamber, they are ready to use. There will be no dimensional changes to the crankshaft.

What are considerations for masking? Material, Thickness, tightness with part, if two masks are to be used for single part due to geometry etc., what factors are to be considered?
@ionitechltd6 жыл бұрын
There are 2 ways of masking surfaces in Plasma Nitriding. The first one is by special masking paints. And the second way is with mechanical masking to cover the surface that you wish to protect from nitriding. About the steel grade for the masking - there is no need for a special steel or even the steel grade of the masked part, a common steel grade can be used. The masking part achieves the heat of the part, so no special requirements for thickness. And about tightness - a consideration should be not to leave small gaps where plasma can get inside and overheat the place.

what is nitriding?
@ionitechltd6 жыл бұрын
Nitriding is a type of heat treatment that incorporates nitrogen into the crystal structure of the metal or alloy, through diffusion, and this way enhances the properties such as surface hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and fatigue life. Whatabout the bottom part? I guess it's not fully treated because some areas are covered
@ionitechltd7 жыл бұрын
Yes, only two small lines remain untreated (where the part was standing on the rail). Everything that is covered remains untreated, as the threads are covered in this example.
@boogerking74117 жыл бұрын
Is it necessary for the material to be in contact with the rail?
@ionitechltd7 жыл бұрын
In this case we used the rail because it has the least surface touching the part. The parts need to be touching by some way the cathode (plate) and that way they also become cathode.

@5:37 are you removing the covering over the threading feature? Are all the jobs are covered by the same cover to protect? Is this process not recommended for threading? Pl explain. I have recently done one job of of this process over an internal threading like feature called as serrations of 0.2mm depth over the length of at least 20mm. each serrations has width of 0.2mm and depth 0.2mm. pitch is also 0.2mm. Trials are awaited as these are internal serrations in ID of die 50mm we cannot check the quality of the profile formed/changed after Nitriding. Pl suggest.
@ionitechltd8 жыл бұрын
Hello! Depending on the parts' requirments the thread could be nitrided or not. The covering for these parts is because the thread musn't be nitrided. If the thread must be nitrided the process parameters should be chosen depending on the thread.

what kind of nitriding is this? gas nitriding, qpq or what ever they call it? Is it true that some methods of nitriding can surpass the hardness of chrome plating?
@ionitechltd9 жыл бұрын
cj spicey Plasma nitriding is a process carried out in pulse glowing discharge and increaces the hardness and wear resistence of the nitrided steels. Plasma Nitriding is the modern way of nitriding and it surpasses greatly gas nitriding and QPQ with many advantages including: lower temperature and time of the process, no deformations and no need for post-process mechanical treatment, and it is eco-friendly unlike gas nitriding and QPQ. Depending of the steel, the hardness achieved by plasma nitriding could be greater than the hardness achieved by chrome plating.
@ionitechltd9 жыл бұрын
+EABOY2600 The process of plasma nitriding is far easier and eco-friendly than the salt bath process. It is easier to achieve better results, how much better depends on the steel. :) We haven't done gun barrels but it is possible to do. We nitride stainless steel almost all the time. Depending on the process it could maintain it's colour or if we add post-oxidation the steel could be made black in colour. Also depending on the process done the steel could have a larger diffusion zone but that will result in loss in corrosion resistance. The reverse could also be done - maintaining the corrosion resistance and smaller diffusion zone but creating a surface hardness of about 1300 - 1500 HV (we measure in Vickers but it is about 75 and above HRC) You can contant us for more information on our email: [email protected]
@WitoldLiliental7 жыл бұрын
That's a sweeping statement. Ion (plasma) nitriding has its advantages but cannot replace controlled gas nitriding ("Nitreg" process") when parts have a complex geometry. Besides, temperature uniformity and measurement in the chamber is much more difficult.
@123kkambiz9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for uploading, Dont you think if there was an extra plate over the second layer tools , there is better homogenous plasma invironment between first and second layer, as it was shown, thefirst layer tools components are sandwitched between two plates, while the second layer is only packed from bellow and above it there is no plate, therefore the plasma homogenity will be diffrent between first layer and second, the heating time o heat second layer(top) will be more as the first layer plasma environment is more intense than the second layer. Thanks uploading the video.

123kkambiz We are preparing a second video at the moment :) We have more than 40 years of experience and we found the best ways to treat the parts in our equipment. The plasma depends on controlling the temperature, the pressure, the gas ratio and other factors, and in this specific process there is no need for a second "sandwich" for the upper parts, and we still achieve the same results on both rows.
@123kkambiz9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for clarification, ad expanatin, I used to do the same job in India with less controlable power supply, and we used to sandwitch the components . I think the controlable pulsed power supply is very essential component for successful operation of the process aon with pressure and gas ratios and temperature. Thank you very much for your reply , looking forward to see your next videos.
