Despite his 3 great runs 2 months earlier, Moorcroft showed he couldnt peak for a major Championship. Eamonn Coghlan left them all in his wake 1 year later in Helsinki, Moorcroft showed he would have been as well. The Commonwealth Games were a minor consolation for Moorcroft a few weeks later in Brisbane.

Moorcroft was unlucky with injury and either missed or was not on top form at some major championships. At Athens in 1982, he had peaked too early in the season and was off the boil. He did well to lift himself to win the Commonwealth 5000m a few weeks later. Coghlan showed he was unlucky at times too, missing Athens in 1982 and LA in 1984.

@@tommytempo1 sure but peaking is part of being a champion. Coghlan was tired of beating Moorcroft.

Additionally, I think you are wrong in saying that Moorcroft couldn't peak at a major championships - he made the 1500m Olympic Final in 1976, won the Commonwealth 1500m in 1978 and weeks later won Bronze over 1500m at the European Champs in Prague. I think he would have medalled at the the 5000m in LA had he not suffered the problem with his hip.

@@tommytempo1 peaking for a major games is of huge importance. The truth is that, apart from a very young Peter Koech, there was no real competition in the 1982 Commonwealth 5000m. Coghlan consistently beat Moorcroft over the years.

@@tommytempo1 Coghlan beat him in both 1976 and 1978. In reality Moorcroft ran 3 top class races but he never again got anywhere near his form of June/July 1982. He is, particularly in UK, given form after those two months that he never had. LA was top 3 under 13:10, yet he never got anywhere near 13:10 after July 1982. I'm not convinced either Moorcroft or Coghlan would have got under 13:10 at LA.

Not unlike his 1500m Olympic win in '84, Seb's finishing speed is incomparable. The man is barely out of breath after this race! At his best NOBODY was better than Seb. His final 150m kick is the best in middle distance history. What a golden age for British running.

Spare a thought for Fernando Mamede of Portugal, a hugely talented athlete, who broke the 10,000m WR that year with 27m13.81 - but repeatedly couldn't cope with the pressure on him of national expectation.

Mamede ran 27:13.81 and broke the 10,000m WR a year later in 1984. Still, he ran 27:25 in 1983 behind Lopes but unfortunately never ran to his potential in major championship finals. However, not many athletes have represented their country at 4x400m Relay up to 10,000m at the Olympics!
