Great tutorial. Very informative. I'm very much a beginner (even though I took surfing lessons years ago.) One thing I really struggled with during those lessons was popping up quickly in one single movement. Often, I would fall off! This is despite my experience with other board riding activities like skateboarding and sandboarding. I'm currently in possession of a short board and I want to try surfing again. And this time around, I'm going to forget about trying to pop up quickly (in one movement) on a short board. For a beginner, that's pretty much 'mission impossible.' I was considering using the knee method. But then I saw your back foot technique in this video and that was a real eye opener. I have never come across this one before. I'm definitely going to try it out as that looks ideal. I'll try it slowly at first. I admit that the knee method has too many steps involved.

38:24 I just did your workout for the first time and loved it! I’m an old school guy, used to lift weights forever, and finally coming around to completely changing up my fitness. Was in fantastic shape into my early 40s, but now in my late 40s I’m in the worst shape of my life (too many traumas). I’m really hoping that by changing things up, not only will my surfing improve (that fell off a cliff too), but also my fitness💪🏼 Thanks, and I look forward to more videos. Have a rad day🤙🏼

Great video. Everything always sounds cooler with an Aussie accent. I’m from California but sometimes while surfing talk like an Aussie just to add some spice to my life.

The back foot pop up doesnt work very well for shortboards, specially on short sizes. On the shortboard pop up it's also the back foot that lands first otherwise it's very hard to get control of the board right from the start.

Ruby, first time I have done this mobility class. Excellent! I regularly do your popup workout. Started doing that as a 70 year old, California male who was having trouble with my popups. The pop up exercises, along with a big beefy board have helped restore my ability to get up. Your classes are terrific. I appreciate so much how you have targeted exercises for all the elements important to surfing. Thank you, thank you thank you!

Hi - I’m having problems with my pop up due to the fact I struggle with bending my front leg (left/regular). When I go from downward dog to bringing my foot forwards as close to my hands as I can, I can never get as far forward with my left foot as my right foot. What flexibility exercises would you recommend to improve this? Thanks

What exercises would you recommend for the core to be able to do the ones where we put our legs above our head straight and also pull up from lying flat “over the ball”😅

E Ruby! Mahalo nō iā ʻoe! Ruby, thank you! I am preparing to learn to surf in the waters where my father learned. I have a little over a month to practice the pop ups. I am hoping 30 years as a contemporary dancer will help. My brother, who was a professional surfer, says they are different body languages and doesnʻt think so. Weʻll see! I am 64 yo! Women in the waves with the goddess of the sea, playing, in delight, and mystery.

Thank you Ruby! I am 62 years old and have never surfed. But, in a month, I'm joining my son and his wife in LA and we're going to head to the beach for me to try some beginner surfing. I asked them for some exercises to help me try to prepare and my daughter-in-law sent me this video. It is very tough and I'm still not able to do the two complete sets, but I'm doing it every morning and I'm already improving! Even if I end up not being able to surf, I think I'll keep doing these exercises. I feel stronger already!

Try to avoid white water specially big white water waves there will be easier openings that have yet turned to white water water which is much easier to get through without being pushed back

Some people say your body has to maintain perpendicular to the board when underwater while the others say parallel. It’s confusing.
