I have a question i’m new to pocket watches. And i’m just wondering when you look inside the movement in some Swiss pocket watches it will have four big letters like FS then under that AR. or AR FS what does this mean?

People nowadays have different values than people back in 1915. Pocket watch value was life and death.

I have a watch similar to the middle watch. My father said the balance spring needs to be replaced but he was unable to find one. How would I find out what type of watch I have?

Very well done and informative video with lots of detail a lot better than one of those silent videos where it's all visual. Also I would make this tip even though I'm not the expert here I would recommend using thin piece of plastic or something in between your blade and your watch casing being gold silver or just some metal you'll have less chance of scratching it. I took a valuable watch to a jeweler and watched him try to open it to change the battery and bent the case right in front of my eyes. I was pissed. If you take your wants to a jeweler always inspect it closely in front of him or her when you hand it off ....but this is a great video

I found a watch that’s was really worn on the outside working exactly like this 5:10 it’s missing the button on the top that I couldn’t open for a long time but I just got it open idk if you know if a jeweler could fix it so the button at least would work someday or anything about types of watches all I have is a few numbers inside and the watch face says “Elgin Natl watch co”

I have a Bulova pocket watch 17 jewel adjusted 14 k gold filled 17AE Bulova New York company. It does not wind or run. I can still wind the hands around. I also have a Waltham railroad watch that works perfectly. I think it is an older one, maybe 1920s - 1940s. I wish I could send you pictures on here, but we can not. I have tried everything. I would like to know as much as I could about them.

Anything both real or imaginary has value, what an item is worth depends on which side of the wallet, your interest are, the seller or the buyer. If acquiring watches brings you joy, then your knowledge base must be ever expanding, prices are not fixed and will fluctuate over time to movement in the markets. I dont know how we would know how much gold was originally used to produce a watch, but that number would not be same today say 100 years later, with services, parts, wear and tear, short of a complete teardown, who knows. So first download all the hall marks from each respective country, marks different in every city, county and country. Those marks contain valuable information not just gold content. Thank you Polonius for previous information.

I bough a pocket watch on vacation yesterday but i opened the cover with my nails not knowing it had a button to open it. Does this damage it?
@thoth1977
@thoth1977 Жыл бұрын
If it's not done repeatedly any damage should be minimal and it depends on the material of the watch case. Gold will be softer than silver. If the cover closes fine and opens fine you should be ok.

@@thoth1977 thx for the info, i have another question tho: apparantly you can wind and "clutch" a pocket watch but i cant find anywere what "clutching" it means, do you know what this means?
@thoth1977
@thoth1977 Жыл бұрын
@@Matie_ that is not a phrase I am familiar with. But there is a clutch in the winding portion of the watch. This allows the crown be turned backwards and slip without risking any damage to the crown wheel and other parts. I think what they mean is the process where some people wind a watch by turning the crown back and forth repeatedly. If you do a search for pocket watch winding parts you should get a diagram of the various parts and their names.

The Swiss were invited to the Waltham factory to see how the mass production was done. So I guess it was the factory`s fault for having the Swiss check it out.

Go to pocket watch data base and pay to look up the value of Your watch . It was free and pisses me off that they did that .Could be some whinny beach caused them to do that . I get that some try to sell a watch for way more than it is worth. On the data base You can find what same watches sold for. I really hate it when they say it is a railroad watch just cause it has a train on the back. Come on man as Joe would say. I collect and repair all the watches I buy on E bay . Thirty something 7 years doing it. Not a single solid gold watch . I like silver actually .
