Having purchased 4 of these speakers new in the 70's for a QX-949a Pioneer. The biggest problem I found was be very careful handling them. The large round magnet on the 15 inch speaker will slip and freeze the voice coil. So don't pick the cabinet up and accidently drop it they may slip. Those magnets are just glued in place. There were two new original raw speakers in the box on Ebay a few years back for $200 I wish I had bought them. Nice video!

If some excess glue oozes out the edges, can it simply be wiped off? Or will it smear and make things look worse?
@Shuksanaudio
@Shuksanaudio Күн бұрын
I usually use a flat edge tool to lift it off rather than wiping it. You can angle the tool so that it pushes the glue back towards the foam then lift it up.

That looks *amazing*! I'm with you, the light wood really goes well with the classic, entirely silver-face X50 series. I've got an SX-750 that I plan to re-veneer--and I bought some tamo wood veneer to do it with, which should be pretty stunning. (The SX-750, I believe, should be easier to do than yours, since no bending/applying to metal is necessary.) I plan on leaving it natural, and possibly just using a Danish oil finish on it.

Bag of rags from the big paint stores will work great for the corners and sides balled up . Another guy recommended it that he uses it and he ships a bunch of heavy stuff. Might be worth trying, even with the shipping costing a few bucks more it could help you in the long run

I just bought one of these for 25 bucks in really good condition. When I turn it on just for a split second it has a static type sound but go away immediately and works great. Should I put the mica on after doing a cleaning with the spray to keep it from breaking down the road? Thanks

I will pick up a pair of these monsters when I arrive in USA next month. Hadn't really planned any major upgrade but is it sacrilege to paint the speakers in a wild colour like metallic pink?

Hello, I own a Pair of NAD Model 240 Floor Standing Speakers. ( 8" Woofers and 1" Tweeters ) The large White Painted 3" NAD logo with 4 White lines is on the lower 1/3 of each of the Black Speaker Boxes. Have you ever seen these Speakers before? I was wondering How and When they came about.

What an awesome video! Great work. I'm the proud owner of a pair of NLAs I bought off the original owner. A4 is the production run so I think they were built around 78 or 79. They are the walnut veneer bullnose versions and the PO took amazing care of them. Little to no scratches on the cabinets. He had them refoamed a while back and had to replace the fried egg tweeters under warranty after partying a little too hard, lol. Enjoy your Advents!

That portable radio on the top shelf looked like the best thing in the lot there. My local thrift shops here sell everything online themselves, there's no deals to be had. All I find there is nicotine soaked, beat up, low end junk. The best deals are at private estate sales and yard sales.

@Shuksanaudio it was hard to tell what size the drivers were but mine are 8 inch. The pair i have are pretty beaten. Ive replace the squakers twice with what ever i could find that fit but the woofer has taken hundreds of hours with a 200 watt amp cranked to just under audible distortion. You know where you crank it up to the point and turn the bass down just enough to clean it up.

Very Cool. Nice job. The comparison was interesting. The advance seemed a bit more defined but slightly sharp. I like when people restore the old stuff. New hi-fi has gotten out of control with their prices and many speakers on the market are so harsh they can’t be listened to for more than an hour. The old speakers were meant to be listened to all day. Nice listening room.

I recently inherited a set of these speakers from my grandfather who passed away. They're in great condition, but I haven't had a chance to listen to them yet since I don't have a receiver. I've learned that I need an amplifier with at least 80 watts per channel at 8 ohms to power them properly. Anything more powerful might damage the tweeters. Could you recommend a newer receiver that can power these speakers well and also has HDMI and Bluetooth support? I'd like to use them as theater speakers. Preferably something I could purchase second hand or budget friendly
@Shuksanaudio
@Shuksanaudio 18 күн бұрын
Nice! That's awesome that you want to keep using them! They are pretty efficient so a receiver with as little as 20 watts per channel would do just fine. The Sony STR-DH590 is a great option that can be had on ebay for a couple hundred bucks

@@Shuksanaudiot hank you for your reply. I’ll check it out! Looking forward to hearing them. Should I be worried that the Sonys power output at 6 ohms exceeds the pioneer speakers 80 watt per channel recommendation? Sony advertises 145 w at 6 ohms. At 8 ohms I believe it would be closer to 90 watts

It depends on what your goal with the gear is. If you only want to restore it to operation and then it's going on a shelf or into storage, then only replace bad caps which means open or shorted, or high ESR. Being out of spec to a degree only tends to matter in certain kinds of circuits. If you want to restore the equipment to regular use, then I would say yes, replace the caps. If it's tube gear check the values of the resistors. Carbon resistors tend to go up in value as they age. Replace selenium rectifiers with diodes.
