Thank you for uploading this! I noticed Burton Watson was reading Han Shan from a tiny pocketbook. Is that tiny pocketbook his own translations? Who is the publisher? I'd love to buy that pocketbook, if anybody knows where I can buy it?

Thank you for uploading this. I recently discovered his writing given that I found a copy of The Chokecherry Tree at a second-hand fair in my fairly small town in southern Argentina. This copy dates from 1959, printed in Barcelona and made me fall in love with his talent for creating characters that sound a lot like the ones you might come across on your daily life. Loved hearing the comparison he made about cultivating fields and writing a novel; a brilliant man, for sure.

So glad I found this footage...Louis was a treasure among the genre of prose poetry. RIP.

Fantastic documentary - thank you so much for posting this and to all those who participated in making it. A few of my favorite moments are 1) the old Chinese man singing out at 20:00, 2) the Chinese monk striking the gong, and 3) Jim Lenfestey's appreciation of cicadas singing, and just his deep appreciation for all poetry. I've had Red Pine's Collected Poems of Cold Mountain at my North Cascades retreat cabin for many years... Deep bow.

Kerouac dedicated The Dharma Bums to Han Shan (what an impact that short novel had upon a certain 17 year old, just on the verge of taking off, what with all the rail riding lore and his vision of a ''rucksack revolution)! ''Japhy Ryder'' fulfilled all the foretold promise, I am reminded. ''If you visit any hermit in China, this is the reception you will receive- nothing but everything they have''. That made my old eyes burn so intensely that I had to spread a little ''water'' to ease them. I don't read fiction or any Western literature these days (excepting Blake, of course). But one can take only so much of Suttas and learned commentaries and so I dug out my moldering copy of The Dharma Bums this afternoon. Hours latter, I search out ''Han Shan'' on YT. What a treasure and blessed synchronicity. Metta to all beings and an extra heaping helping to the one who uploaded this addition to my (jealously exclusive!) ''favorites'' cache!

It's a very different way to the poem...

Thank you for this wonderful portrait. A genius this man. A great poet of the ages, a troubadour, a sage, a bard, a philosopher, a pastor, a king. To the likes of Lincoln, of Whitman, of Thoreau or Emerson, Robert is a solitary man with tight lips and a shining forehead which reflects in his pressed speech and intelligent demeanour. Always elegantly dressed, a posture tutored like an old tree, solid yet flexible. Robert's voice and gestures, full of wit and play, and yet deep like an ancient well out of which springs forth the nurishing ideas and sounds of the soul. Bly danced with words, with his speech, and with his hands, carressing the poetry of things and showing it to us with reverence and joy. Thank you Robert for your work although I did not personally know you, I feel blessed to have found you. And thanks Mike again for this wonderful hommage.

I took painting and drawing classes at Southwest MN State 50 years ago. My sister let me know about this video. It brought back lots of memories. Thanks for producing and posting it.

Pity about the cartoons - they distracted from the reading of the poems in the original (as well as warping the experience with predictable anachronistic images...). The music of the language lost...

Today, by fate I came into possession of a beautiful print by this artist. So thank you for sharing this documentary.

He had an incredibly pointed and clever sense of humor. I heard it many times. "Senator McCarthy, you're running for President, yet you've never had executive experience. What do you say to that?" McCarthy: "Well if that's the criterion, you might as well tell me I need to be a plumber because the White House has 40 bathrooms."

So ironic that Hillary Clinton campaigned for Eugene and then she turned into Hubert Humphrey.
