Hi there James. Interesting take on your language learning journey. I'm the same, except I'm not documenting mine. A couple of tips that might be useful for you. *First - your tutor. If you are having 30 minute sessions, I don't know about you, but I would want the tutor to use the time more effectively. It's understandable if someone isn't that qualified or experienced, but if you are paying them, surely you don't want them to use valuable minutes talking at you and explaining the same thing over and over? He also needed to drill you more to let you get your mouth round the words. It seemed more like he was practising his English, than you practising Portuguese. But anyway - your choice. *Second - I would recommend the "Portuguese with Carla" podcasts for pron. This is a well-qualified couple who teach a lot of engaging idiomatic European Portuguese, and the podcast drills you in connected speech, so it's great for pron practice in the car. Liz Sharma's "Talk the streets" is also good for basic phrasebook type language - her pronunciation is great! "Portuguese with Leo" is also good for extensive listening, for pron practice and explaining grammar points, as well as learning about Portuguese culture. And recently I also started listening to "Learn European Portuguese online" which has some good content. *I agree with you about Memrise - the vids are great for extensive listening. *For launching into Portuguese from Spanish or Italian, how about watching the same news video on Euronews, first in one language, then in the other? A great shortcut to connecting your knowledge base in one language to another. * And finally, there's a great Tandem language exchange group called TamoJunto/EstamosJuntos, which is half Brazilian learners of Spanish, and half Latin American Spanish speakers learning Portuguese. They meet near daily, and they also have a linked WhatsApp group which is very active, where the members peer teach each other. You might find it an extra challenge at first to immerse yourself in two varieties of Portuguese, specially the pronunciation aspect, but I'm sure your ear will soon tune in. I'd be interested to know if you find any of these useful.

Wow, thanks for those points appreciate them :). Will try a few of them for sure. The Portuguese teach was new when I recorded this episode (I record a couple of weeks in advance) so he was getting into the hang of teaching - he's changed his approach now which you'll see as I publish more vlogs. Thanks for the advice on the language exchanges too!

My go-to app for language learning just so happens to be Immersive Translate. It’s a browser extension that supports over 100+ languages. I use it to translate webpages and documents, and even to watch my shows and movies on Netflix, which has really helped me immerse myself in the language. I’ve been using it ever since I came across it a few months ago, and couldn’t be happier.

Thanks for the great advice, James! Very helpful as usual. We can find many apps for words learning. The most important thing is that in anki, for example, we are able to write whole phrases, not only separate words. The context has a huge impact and makes the learning process more creative , individual and easy. The paper version of flashcards or school note book are also useful, though it is usually not going to be comfortable if we are not at home ) To be honest, I haven't use paper flashcards since university) The process does not stay still and we have a great technology to help us )Thank you again, waiting for your next video this evening)

Is this the same advice for reading as well?
@learnwithlingoersАй бұрын
Very good question! I'd say if you're wanting to real for entertainment/pleasure then you'll be more in the flow if you're able to keep reading without interruption. Without stopping to look up words. If you understand the jist of what you're reading but there's a few words you don't understand, just keep reading. This is because if you stop reading, pause, look up the word etc, this will add friction to the process of reading. It may feel more like 'a chore' or 'homework' rather than entertainment. If that makes sense. Alternatively, if you don't understand what you're reading at all, then it makes sense to look up the words because you couldn't progress without knowing what you're reading about. Hope that makes sense :)

I recently watched a movie in Russian language. It was subtitled in English, but English is not my mother tongue. I only had time to read some of the texts. I have only studied Russian for a short time and only knew a small part of the words. However, I understood the movie very well and was able to enjoy it. I totally agree with all the things you've said. I truly believe that the most important thing is that the easiest way to learn your target language is to immerse youself to it as much as possible. For instance, I like reading books and watching cheesy movies ))) So I decided to do it only in my target language. At the beginning it was difficult, exhausting, but later this process rolled up quite naturally. Audiobooks, podcasts, online newspapers etc. I like your advice to listen podcasts/movies on the slower speed (75 % as for me). I did that for a few months before I'd changed it to normal speed. It helped me massively. And all those stuff should be written/recorded by native speakers for the native speakers. Than your brain has no other choice, but adjust to the environment, though it doesn't feel like an exercise at the same time. Very odd, but it works somehow. It's completely okay feel tired or bored. We are all humans. The most crucial thing is that you could do your daily entertainment routine in your target language and enjoy the process. Not immediately. Certainly, not. But after some time it feels quite comfortable, convenient and gives a huge improvement. A sagnificant step forward. I mean, the pursuit of the goal could be pleasant and fun. Isn't that something ? Thank you very much, James. You've summarized the experience of the successive language learning so brilliant
@learnwithlingoersАй бұрын
Hey Elena, glad you enjoyed it and found it helpful! Of course - you've written a lot of great points there too :)
@ElenaChubukovaАй бұрын
I'd like to add something important, as i believe. The learning routine shouldn't go through the same scenario every day. More fun to change it completely from time to time )) Monotone, repetitive actions are boring. I love to change resource, technics, themes etc. Though i still have some troubles with goals, mostly enjoing the process )) and - yes, we can reach the pinnacle of language acquisition (or any other ambitious goal) through discipline. So true. I couldn't say more )))) thank you. Very inspiring video!
@learnwithlingoersАй бұрын
Hey Elena, of course - mix it up if you get bored after a few weeks. It keeps things interesting. Consider using the same methods to learn a language (eg listen to a podcast) but think about switching up the exact podcast you listen to for example. Language learning should be seen as a continuous part of your lifestyle, so the more you can integrate it - and enjoy it, the better! Glad you enjoyed it, I have a lot of new videos coming out every Friday in the coming weeks and months so be sure to stay in the loop :). Keen to hear your thoughts on my future videos as well. Cheers.
@ElenaChubukovaАй бұрын
I mostly agree with you, though I think 10 minutes per day is not enough even for the small improvement. It'll take ages to see any difference. From my practice, 3 hours per day helped me to reach the exact goal I needed. I learned by myself, at home, after work. After that I moved to Turkey to work there and native speakers were immensely surprised to hear a good (maybe only decent, not perfect))) pronunciation and rich vocabulary. What I am trying to say is language acquisition is a fascinating thing, but it needs more time and attention daily. Different practices, interesting books and podcasts and so on. Learning English is a captivating quest for me, wich I am enjoying every minute. Very important, I suppose, to find stuff in accordance with your interests, as you said. It helps a lot and certainly enjoy the process))) and you'll find time, motivation and all those things which you need to achieve your goal. Thank you for the video. Pleasure to see that.
@learnwithlingoersАй бұрын
Hey Elena, thanks for your comment! It's true, 10 minutes per day won't get you fluent anytime soon - it required more than that. However, many people think that they need to dedicate hours per day to start with, which actually puts them off from starting altogether. So it's better to do even 10 minutes per day and take 2 years (as an example) to reach a conversational level, than to try and put in 3 hours per day (like yourself) and give up after a few weeks which is what many people do. It's a mindset thing in my opinion. Congrats on your journey so far anyway!

Trying learn Spanish again what I have learned so far about me is just learning a word list is not effective for me. I do better learn phrases. Journaling daily no matter how small helps me remember the language. Also I have to have the courage to be bad at Spanish until I am good.
@learnwithlingoersАй бұрын
Nice, yes learning new words in context definitely helps your mind understand "how and where can I use this word in conversation". It makes the word more meaningful :). Very true about being bad at something before you're good as well - good mindset to have if you can accept the feeling of 'being bad at something' for a while!

@learnwithlingoersАй бұрын
That's cool - once you're able to say a few basic phrases, enough to have a simple conversation then look for a native speaker to practice with. You have two options with this; find a language exchange partner which is free (trading your time for their time) or you can pay for online lessons (it can be as little as $5 per hour though so it's not too expensive). I use Preply for this. It means you can build confidence and actually put to use what you've learnt. For Preply, you can use my referral link if you want to have 70% off your first lesson:preply.com/en/?pref=NDY3MzU2NQ==&id=1712666886.780919. No worries either way though, that's my advice! So, from what I could understand from the video, we, the learners, should be learning like "living in the moment while learning a new meaning with the new words we encounter, and incorporate them as much as we interpret what really means upon context". I don't know if I am not mistaken with this, but, in my own words, this is what I get.
