According to an ex Amtrak engineer out of LA, 229 was the best loading engine on property at the time, and he wanted to have it on his retirement run. So he got his wish, SBA-LAX, sometime in the mid 1990’s (can’t remember the year)…

The only reason this engine holds any place in my brain is because in the late 80s, my family got our first HO scale train set, and it had an electric Amtrak 229, with a gray hopper car and a lime green box car. Had enough track for a single oval. Toys R Us or Play Co, San Diego, circa 1989.

Nice work ! Very interesting to see, as a European with interest in North-American railways. More about the history of Maybach: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZiXfICbbLt9fK8 . Later in this documentary, rail applications are treated, and near the end hydraulic transmission is mentioned.

As the locomotive is reversing through Brightside on the return journey, there's a close-up shot of the headlamps. They look like their swiveling in some rotating fashion, is this just an optical illusion or do they actually move like that for some reason?
@rlnoel
@rlnoel 3 жыл бұрын
No they actually move like that to aid in visibility.

"Mars" headlights. SP was really into these for a long time. (I always enjoyed SP's fetish for lighting -- it made their engines look like they had more eyes than a jumping spider.) Here's the Wiki on them: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Light

its got one of the most gorgeous horns ever I love it but I hate Amtrak California its soooooo ugly and plain. BUT THAT K5LA OOOHHH YOUCH. Otherwise k5la is the best horn ever so is phase 4, 4b, and phase 5 for the engines. my fav is phase 4 superliner cars with the superliner across the side and the phase 4b is sweet to for the supers but not as nice. phase 4 and 5 for the engines are all awesome. specially the cabbage looks sweet in 5.

Hey, i know this person is pretty healthy even though he is about 30 years old, but why don’t we take all all their organs out but computerize the head for ear, mouth, and vocal cord response? Good idea right? (Basically what happened to the F40PH’s.

It breaks my heart to see 229 go to waste. I mean it didn’t really but they could’ve just gave him a tune up and a new horn but why paint him? That would be cool to just have a phase I f40 rolling around right? I’m a fan of NPCU units but I mean a blast from the past would be awesome!!

Why is there a giant train station in the middle of a busy road anyway? Who's the moron that designed Jack London Square Station?
@AVeryRandomPerson
@AVeryRandomPerson 3 жыл бұрын
It was built as a replacement for the original Oakland station, which wasn't safe anymore after the 1989 Earthquake. The station itself isn't in the street, but a small segment of street running exists.
