Dude your product works freaking great and it's got a decent smell. My wife was pretty happy but she didn't have to smell hide no more. Lol I think I have a new hobby. Normally I make drums from my hides but I'm going to start tanning leather now. Especially with how difficult it is for me to get ahold of brain if I don't collect it from the animal itself. This stuff is very handy and I am thankful it exists. I have a pretty big bear I need to tan. I'm working on some smaller skins to get the hang of using the product first and then I'm going to tackle my bear skin I got. 👍🏼
@TanningYourHide20 күн бұрын
We are thrilled you like our product! Yes, once you get started, tanning is addicting! Tip on the bear skin - bears are super fatty and greasy, so be sure to degrease it prior to tanning - you'll have a much better end result. Thank you for the feedback!!

Great kit but I have a few questions. The instructions in the kit say 1/4 cups of salt for rehydrating but your website says 3/4 salt. Then for pickling bath, the kit instructions say 1 tablespoon of degreaser but this KZbin video says 1 teaspoon. Which is correct?
@TanningYourHide22 күн бұрын
For the rehydration bath, we recommend using 1/4 cup of salt per gallon of water. Too much salt will impede rehydration. I apologize for the confusion - let me know where on our website this is conflicting and we'll update it. We do recommend 3/4 cup of salt per gallon in the "pickle bath". The amount of Degreaser used really depends upon the condition of the skin being degreased. Typically 1 teaspoon per gallon is sufficient. We will update the Tan-a-Fur kit directions to state this. Thank you for bringing these questions to our attention!
@thehe254621 күн бұрын
@@TanningYourHidethanks for your reply! It wasn’t actually the website that said 3/4 cup salt for rehydrating, I meant to say in this KZbin video. But thank you for clarifying. Working on my first rabbit pelt right now. Frozen roadkill but sadly got some fur slip.

Good product. One question. What would happen if you was the hide after you are done stretching and fluffing? Let’s say you want to was to remove the chemical smell or to just was to get dust off ? Will it get stiff again?
@TanningYourHide22 күн бұрын
Yes, if you wash the hide, you will need to break it again to keep is soft as it dries. There shouldn't be a chemical smell - if there is a residual odor, you can use our Hair Gloss to add a shine - it also has a pleasant smell. If the hide is dusty, try blowing it out with a pet blower or reverse vacuum.

Can you use an angle grinder or some other electric tool to do the initial fleshing?
@TanningYourHide25 күн бұрын
It is best to use a fleshing tool by hand on a hard surface. A hide at this stage is too soft to withstand a power tool, and can cut holes more readily. You can use a pressure washer though - this is effective at removing the flesh and cleaning the hide.

When you mention "dust" at 1:03:30 is this residual, dehydrated tanning chemical? I notice you were diligent about wearing a mask with the liquid baths, but nothing when the vacuum/blower was sending things airborne. Is the hide safe for kids to handle?
@TanningYourHideАй бұрын
The dust if any, is baking soda on the hair from the bath when the pH was raised. You can absolutely wear the mask that is included in the kit for this optional step. The finish hide is safe to handle, how would children be using it?
@matthewghardyАй бұрын
@@TanningYourHide Thank you for the prompt response! If we used it as a rug or cover for the back of a couch, my children would be playing or laying on it. I'm at the oiling step now after raising the pH in the A-21 solution. Since there is no further "rinse" after being in the acidi, I was just concerned it might still have caustic properties. Looking more closely, pH of 4.5 is no stronger than coffee, so not really a concern. Thank you for the great support and excellent video demonstrations.

Thank you! Can you shake out the salt and let it dry out and leave it that way for a period of time before proceeding? Also, I’ve heard of people just leaving the salt on for a week or more, is that a good way or does that just let the juices sit on the hide longer?
@TanningYourHideАй бұрын
All good questions! Yes, you can shake the salt off and hang the hide to dry out. When it is partially dry, fold it and let it finish drying. This will make it easier to fit into the rehydration bath when you are ready to tan it. Store the hide in a cool, dry area and it will last several months this way. Regarding letting the salt sit on the hide, it is OK as long as the salt is not damp. If it is, shake it off and apply a new layer to pull out any additional fluid. Thank you.
@tylerth21Ай бұрын
Between cleaning/degreasing and applying NuTan should the hid be allowed to dry completely or just until damp or just a quick drain? A bit of clarification would be great. Thank you.
@TanningYourHideАй бұрын
NuTan should be applied to a damp hide. Not dripping wet - or it will dilute the tan, and not dried out, or the tan won't penetrate.
@tylerth21Ай бұрын
@@TanningYourHide Thank you for the prompt reply. I was impatient and applied it immediately after commenting. I think I was a touch on the wet side still. I have a bit left in the bottle and will apply more once this soaks in and hides dry a bit, to ensure that enough penetrates the hides.

I've sold hundreds of skins with glycerin/alcohol mix for over a decade. Folks make wallets, boots, bow wraps, etc. with my skins. I've never had anyone of my long term customers complain. I've had some say my skins are the best they've ever worked with. I've debated whether to try methods such as yours but I just say if it ain't broke don't fix it. There is something I do that I came across by accident that might have made my glycerin/alcohol method better than most which will remain in my brain.

This is an amazing tanning tutorial! My one question is what should I do to get rid of the artificial oil from the fur, after I've oiled the hide then let it dry? It won't dry out because of all the oil in the fur and I don't know what to do
@TanningYourHide2 ай бұрын
Glad the video was helpful! If there is oil in the hair, use a soapy wash cloth to remove it. If needed, you can lightly run the hair side under water, try not to wet the flesh side as you will need to re-break the hide to keep it soft.

After cleaning it with the dawn dish soap solution, do you rinse the hide off in clean water? And do let the hide dry out for any amount of time?
@TanningYourHide2 ай бұрын
If there is excess soap, you can give the hide a quick rinse under fresh, cool running water. The skin should be damp, not dripping wet, prior to applying NuTan. If there is too much water, the tan will be diluted, if the hide is too dry, NuTan will not penetrate properly. Thank you.

I didn’t go through all the comments and might be repetitious. As a trapper and fur handler, you do a nice, realistic job with this. I haven’t tried this product but will. A couple pointers: the fleshing board is available at trapping supplies or a quick search on FB or internet have lots of plans. I’ve never used an ulu knife I prefer traditional fleshing tools with dull and sharp sides. I also use c-clamp vice grips to grip the top of the hide on the board. They work well with the board. When you’re pre-breaking, try a softball or volleyball under the hide. Works well. Also, the fleshing board is also a good tool to work the hide. Nice job instructing. It’s nice to see use and preservation of entire game animals.

If im out in the field on a group hunt, can i put the hide in a cooler with ice in like a trash bag to keep it in good condition. Or would it be better to drive it home to stick in the freezer in a trashbag.
@TanningYourHide3 ай бұрын
We answered this off-line, but will also reply here so others can see it. Ideal is to get the hide frozen as soon as it is removed and cooled. If this is not possible, you can flesh the hide - get as much meat, fat and membrane off as you can. Then heavily salt it to draw out the moisture. Let this sit overnight, the next day, shake the old salt off and re-salt with fresh salt for 12-24 hours. Then shake off and hang the hide to finish drying (you can fold it to make it easier to pack out).
