Now I am confused. Peter Spares can supply a Mainline J72 replacement axle set. I have a Joem J72, but the wheel retainer has Buchmann's name on it and the chassis is different as it has a motor with a large brass worm gear. I have replaced the motor and transferred the worm drive, but the plastic part of the axles are split. So I think I will have to order both J72 axle kits from Peter Spares and see which one fits. I have 4 J72s and two are non-runners. I intend to use them as Station Pilots. Martin. (Thailand) Thanks for the video.

First video I've found to be very helpful, I'm trying to put together a train of bachmann TTAs and I'm struggling to find the best livery to do them in so I can run them with BR Blue and Railfreight livery locos. I've so far got two FINA TTAs in silver but I'm unsure what period these ran until? (they have two stars and no hazchem panels) Also would different companies be seen in the same train?
@ModelRailwaysUnlimited7 күн бұрын
Glad it was helpful! two stars is upto 60mph. I can't say never but mixed company trains was rare. Have you seen my Rail freight videos? Might give some inspiration. If you can get the vehicle numbers etc I could look them up for you when I get a moment?
@km-ti8gc7 күн бұрын
I will have a look at it thanks, the FINA TTAs just have the number 1 and number 3, so I presume this must be the first livery when they were first built. I'm happy to respray them into a grey livery if they are too early for the 1980s? maybe FINA did an 80s livery? Failing that, I'd be happy with any company name really. Just the period I want correct for the 80s.

I have the same Caledonian version. I specifically bought the 1980 version because it has the hand rails on the water tank and at the back of the cab, which were deleted on later models. I did the same brass smoke box door detail as you but got a bit obsessed and picked out the ring and handle of the door fastener and the hinge straps in silver as well. Oh, and the curved handrail on the smoke box as well. It really dresses it up. They are cheerful little things. Very enjoyable video. 😊

Thanks kindly. No I never did one, those days were too long ago. However it's not too hard, the insulated wheel was removed and it's plastic bush ( these often fail now so check if replacements can be had) then a suitable metal rod was driven in, using the axle and rod the wheel was turned by a hand drill as dad got to work with various files until the profiles were correct. I did a modern version of this in my Wrenn video for my Lima MK1 coach wheels, check my last video near the end

The layout my brother and I had originally back in the late 1960s / early 1970s used mainly Hornby Dublo models, many of which came from Gamages' ex-Christmas displays. Thus I have always had a bit of a soft spot for Wrenn models as well but they were always rather expensive. In the mid 1970s I used to want an LNER 0-6-2 but it took over nearly 40 years before I finally had one. By then of course, there were much better versions but a wish was fulfilled, especially as I got my one for a reasonable £30.

Nice collection, Mike. Great to see the trains doing what they were designed and made to do. That Brighton Belle is a superb model, especially now you've refurbed it. The closest I have to such models is a BR Maroon Hornby Doublo City of London. It hadn't run for decades, so I sent it off the OOBill for attention (he made a video about it) and now it's easily the strongest stram loco I have: it hauled 26 Lima Mk 1 coaches a while ago at no more than 60% power. Amazing machine. It's a truism to say, "they don't make 'em like they used to."

As a child I adored Wrenn models. I had a Castle class which I renumbered 7037 Swindon and many of the wagons. I was also given a fair amount of Hornby Dublo though this never really ran on my layout (since the 8P needed re magnetising and the 4MT was 3 rail). Later I bought a class 20 diesel but somehow it didn't match the excitement the diecast models brought me. I've recently bought several more Castles and more wagons though I no longer have a layout to run them on and have now turned to TT120.

Fantastic video. Despite the 'all bells and whistles' (literally!) modern products, the old timer models I grew up with from Lima, Wrenn, Airfix and Mainline remain my favourites. How strong the connection is with the things we had and liked as youngsters. Nothing can ever really replace that sentimental attachment however irrational it may seem to others. P.S. You need to add at least one Wrenn 08 to your collection, probably my favourite Wrenn loco of them all despite the humble nature of the prototype.
@ModelRailwaysUnlimited12 күн бұрын
Thank you very much indeed, I'm so glad you feel the same way as me on this. I have to say I've loved every bit of this project. Funnily enough I did set out to buy an 08 but the seller is away and I ran out of time. What motor do the 08s have in them?
@paulc958811 күн бұрын
@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Vertical Ringfield in the 08. My 08s are the W2234 in NCB red and W2243 in Dunlop yellow, the best liveries for this loco I think. Very powerful and they have excellent electrical continuity, never stalling on points in sidings at slow speeds. They can't crawl like a Bachmann 08 of course but exceptionally good for a short wheelbase loco produced ~45 years ago.

Hornby Dublo and later Wrenn are just wonderful. I’m currently running a 3-rail layout and loving every minute of it ❤. The Dublo/Wrenn City is an absolute beast. I have two and have converted one to 3-rail using a Marklin skate. She runs beautifully and may be returned to 2-rail when I start on my "retirement " layout in a couple of years time. That said, I’m leaning more and more towards a combined 2/3-rail layout "à la" Oscar Paisley, especially as I’ve acquired quite a collection of 3-rail items over the last couple of years. Great video, thankyou. I actually prefer these vintage models to the modern ones. They have all the advantages of simple, robust engineering. With a little detailing and maybe weathering they are just as good to my eyes as the modern stuff, and certainly a lot less hassle to maintain !!

So if you get some spare wrenn doors you can reinstate the opening doors. Never seen the Triang-wrenn logo before. Did you know they also partnered with lima? Under their wrenn micro models n gauge range. Lovely collection of models. I know there are more detailed trains available now but I would be happy for hours playing with that lot. I've got that model, I'm so glad you solved the fan mystery for me. I would urge everybody to be careful with that easily removed roof. Mine is super tight and those magnets are stronger than previous models. I've seen people on the internet using those little handles (they can fly off) and scalpels/screwdrivers - not great. A very fine stiff guitar plectrum is best, if you can find enough gap to squeeze it in. Not sure about those pickups. They didn't work too well when I tested each wheelset. Almost impossible to service with those bogie clips. Other than that, I agree it looks fantastic, I just dread a major service - it's built like a modern car!
@ModelRailwaysUnlimited14 күн бұрын
Good tip Paul. The gear chain is so well greased with long life that it shouldn't need servicing for ages and ages. The clips can be disengaged with hooks, two at a time, I use bent flat head screwdrivers, pass past the clip then pull up under clips, with a bit of luck they are eased off.
