Thanks for this. I've listened to the Faery Queen a dozen times but never watched it performed. Brilliant! A quirky, fun and gender-bending take on the masque.

Watched the whole thing! Both "Let the Fifes and the Clarions" and "Now the Maids and the Men" got me WHEEZING REAL GOOD! And Michael Chance's costume in the latter duet really did it for me! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

"Oh day of joy when you became my lover, Then our existence seemed to blossom with love! Life is so loving in this enchanted dream And my sweetest remembrance is your first kiss of love. Lovely to be living, my dream was more than any dreaming, Ah, I am so happy! O love, now fold your wings around me, A new joyful feeling deep in my heart is singing, I feel it - everything is love, because I'm happy, On every side there's only smiling and joy and love! Ah, I tremble with memories so sweet, When I recall the joy of our first day of love, Yes! I am so happy - Ah! I am so happy! Oh so happy, and I tremble with memories so sweet When I recall the joy of our first day of love."

The production is by Nicholas Hytner. The setting references Vauxhall Gardens (I believe), and the statue is of course a famous one of Handel!

Amazing production, lol, only sometimes the tempos are really too fast and the singers cannot handle that in time, which adds to the comedy but ruins the beauty of harmony and musical structure. I really enjoyed the production. Thank you!

Amazing how you repeat the touristic superficialities for this masterpiece. The French were simply trying to copy what they understood of the Roman architectural heritage, earlier in Tuileries and then at Versailles, all the way down to the Roman triumphal arches in the courtyard of their palaces, in the middle of the city--everywhere. Napolean (himself born Roman/Italian) carried all the Roman goodies he could get his hands on, to Paris. From columns holding ceilings while leaning against the side walls to pilasters, to grand staircase, to giant yards, lakes, domes, roofings, high corridors and windows... all copied from the Romans (except indoor plumbing that French never figured how to make). All of this are found at Casreta, and they are Roman, whether directly or circuitously.

Le sommet de la civilisation française, le Grand Siècle ! Philippe d’Orléans fut un excellent Régent, pacifique et tolérant, qui apporta la paix et la prospérité au royaume. Débauché mais débonnaire et cultivé.

Attending Elmhurst College with Dave I grew to love opera through his eyes. We performed together in the college’s 1st opera, “The Marriage of Figaro.” I’m sure he had something to do with that. All my best to you, Dave. Arlene Buric Klein.
