Your bird friend is a south island robin. We had huge storms a couple of years back that washed out a lot of the tracks around browning hut.

That message on the wall is Dutch - it says: Dear Dad & Mom, Its been raining non-stop for 2 days now and we have one dry wood left... Hopefully it will be drier today so we can get to the next hut

Shame Twighlight was closed. It’s a lovely gentle start to the trail. When it’s all mended, go back and walk from the Cape to Te Paki stream. The road walking on the NI was relentless. I can see why some hitch the road sections.
