Honestly, I prefer the old mercury vapor lamps. That blueish light is just synonymous with nighttime to me. I HATED the orange sodium vapor lamps from the 80s and 90s. I do like the LEDs better - they have better directional properties to reduce glare and light pollution, but overall i think we over illuminate our nights, and the low power requirements of LEDS just encourages more use. The night sky is being lost.

I repair alot of TV's on my channel. I just made a video of a 70" LG TV's back lights doing this exact thing. In fact this is a major issue with the LG brand. I'm thinking a future video where I try this repair on that said 70 incher I couldn't bring myself to toss out. I've been waiting to find an identical model with a cracked screen to reuse the back lights from. Now I'm going to try painting the LED's themselves. Thanks for the tip! 👍

How about we just put a yellow piece of lucite over each panel to bring them back to a white light? LEDs put heat out through the back so it shouldn’t affect anything badly. I realize you’d have to wait til they got noticeably blue before putting another yellow filter over them, and if it’s delaminated phosphors you’d need to see the rate of delamination in different climates to find the correct yellow filter needed.

This whole situation makes me so angry! Old high pressure sodium streetlights were already very energy efficient - much more than incandescent or fluorescent. Additionally, the yellow light didn't disrupt your night vision as much as a "white" streetlight - or your circadian rhythm if streetlight comes in through your windows. The blue / purple / pink failure mode is just insult to injury! We're replacing good technology with something that's objectively worse!

Ive always attributed this to local governments getting suckered into buying poorly made lamps in bulk

Boston area eh? Me thinks perhaps you find yourself traveling southbound on 93 as you enter the city proper, more or less right before the Zakim. Regardless, those lights drive me nuts, glad I know what the heck the issue is now. I was hoping it wasn't going to be the new light style for everywhere in the future. 😮 😂

Just outside my workplace there's a couple of these that are a dark purple, almost like an UltraViolet light, it made me definitely scratch my head as I had no idea why they would do that. I never asked for this video but it came up in my recommendation and it just answered this question for me, they are simply failing.

Huh!!! I honestly thought it was because of some weird mandate to reduce light pollution. Honestly it's nauseating. I'm glad it's being fixed. Kinda reminds me of the piece of medical equipment they used in the 80's that had a flaw where the computer would glitch and instead of delivering a therapeutic dose of radiation for chemo would instead deliver a dose 2500x the lethal dose of ionizing radiation. Therac 25 or something

I'm in Edgewater, MD. There are many that have turned blue/purple. Generally, you go onto your energy provider (we have BGE) and tell them that a street light is out and say it's also turning blue. They take a couple of months, but they will change it.

Its wild to think that in a couple decades, movies will show their time periods based on if the streets are filled with an amber glow or not. I miss sodium lights.

I’m in Phoenix and saw 4 street lights in a row near the MIM that were purple for the past 6 months. I figured the city was testing out a new lighting system. They are back to ‘normal’ now. I wonder if they just ‘fixed’ the issue or installed all new lights. Thanks for the video

A few years back I did lighting maintenance for T K Maxx in the uk (known as T J Maxx elsewhere) and we had a similar issue in the changing rooms, they used those philips lamps and the phosphur layer broke down and they called us out cause all the lights were turning purple. So I did wonder when I see local lamp posts doing the same, if it was a similar issue, fair to say from this video that it is.

Now that I see this video, I feel stupid for believing the previous reason that I had heard. I was told the purple lights were purposely being put in my neighborhood, because it prevented addicts from using any needles because they can't find a vein under purple light...

8:09...bro, I can't! You're mangling it! LOL No, the phosphorus is not on the "dome". You ripped it off with the dome. Flashlight guys have been de-doming LED's forever. You have to either soak the LED in solvent, or cut it horizontally with a razor and carefully remove the rest. No redesign. The dome is purely for optics, adding more "flood" to the light pattern.

In the flashlight world, Chinese knock off company called Latticebright have been producing counterfeit CREE LED's. You sincerely can't tell the difference unless you look under high magnification. Then you can see the PCB is different, the wires on the die and several other differences between them. But to the naked eye, they look the same...oh and the performance of the LB vs CREE is AWFUL. They are horribly inefficient and the CRI is terrible. We were buying them blindly for years until a hobbiest put a chip on the bench and noticed it wasn't performing to spec and looked closer. From there it exploded as everyone started looking to see what they had. More quality from overseas! PS. The dome on the LED is just for optics. It's not a "new design". We regularly de-dome LED's to narrow the beam focus for flashlights.

Many miles - likely hundreds of street lights needed to be replaced in my midwestern city. I'm not surprised. Just like my home LED lights that don't have very long lifespans. LED bulb technology seem good to go, but designed to fail so we buy more.
