1590 THE COLOUR ORGAN SOUND IN A VISUAL MEDIUM GIUSEPPE ARCIMBOLDO (1527-1593) Arcimboldo was the earliest to attempt to match pictures with sound long before the 19th century pre cinema pioneers. The term Colour Organ denotes a mechanical device built to embody sound, specifically music, in a filmic or pictorial medium. In 1590, Arcimboldo defined this as creating “colour music,” embracing a radiance or glow. Mechanical Colour Organs first debuted as physical instruments in the 18th century, modelled after both the pipe organ and piano. 1725 French monk Louis Bertrand Castel (1688-1757) suggested his concept of an Ocular Harpsichord. It was a notable cultural phenomenon of the European Enlightenment, meant to play ‘colour music’. Castel asked why people didn’t make harpsichords for the eyes as well as for the ears. It was then known as the Clavecin Oculaire. 1877 The Bainbridge Bishop Colour Organ for "painting music" on a semi-circular-shaped screen was displayed at the Phineas T. Barnum Museum in New York in 1877. Bishop started working on his Color Organ two years prior. [ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_organ ] The instruments of light were designed for a pipe organ that could project coloured lights onto a screen, synchronised with the playing of the organ. Bainbridge patented his Colour Organ in 1877. Bishop had three of his Colour Organs built however none survived because of fire including one that was in the home of the circus man himself. No photographs of the instrument are known to have been taken.

Interesting. Wagner's use of atonality is quite adventurous, anticipating later composers by a good 50 years and more. Von Karajan's direction is absolute mastery. None have been as amazing either then or since.

Père tout-puissant ! Daigne abaisser vers moi ton regard ! Tu m'as réconforté, tu m'a donné le pouvoir souverain. Daigne abaisser vers moi ton regard ! Toi qui règnes dans les Cieux ! O mon Dieu ! Toi qui m'as donné le pouvoir souverain, Je t'implore ardemment ! Exauce ma prière !

This piece sounds especially funereal on organ. Wagner transcribes quite naturally to this instrument.

Is there more to the ad shown at the top? It’s an ad for Liebig’s Meat Extract, and at the bottom, it says “Wagner as student, a lesson with Cantor Weinlig, at Leipzig, 1831.” Cantor Weinlig was the music director at the Thomaskirche, or St. Thomas’es Church, meaning he had J.S. Bach’s former job, and he gave the young Wagner the little formal instruction he ever had.

There's so much pain and anguish that goes into this movement of the symphony. What horrors did Tchaikovsky go through to lead him to write this wonderful yet thought-provoking symphony?

Not my cup of tea. It is far too slow! That's btw a huge problem of many Wagner performances in the last few decades. Wagner himself would probably not like it. He told his conductors constantly to make it faster because otherwise the audience would fall asleep 😊

Jon Vickers is the best Siegmund ever. I wish governements would find young talents and raise and train them to become great Wagnerian voices. just as Russia and China train Olympic athletes. I mean, even if the kids don't wanna do it. We need those voices.
