My GF (aka "Dipsy", also a Pharaoh Hound) has got 100% the character traits you have described! Independent skittish energetic cheetah-wannabee Velcro ! Every morning is love time - she showers me (I mean shower literally) with kisses & licks to say "Good Morning" when she's done with that, I get discarded while she points her attention elsewhere!

My friend if you want a dog because you fell yourself alone in your house well better a Chihuahua...the primitive dogs need a lot of movement and activity they are super bored in the apartment... Maybe you made a big mistake choosing this breed. People don't understand till now ...that cannot have a breed only because they like it.

I own another primitive breed, quite similar physically to the Pharaoh: a Cirneco dell’Etna. He is FABULOUS! I ❤ him to pieces! I recognize he is quite smart and you need to keep him curious, challenged… He is affectionate in his own terms. Super easy dog except on the leash! 😂😂😂

A great PRO of primitive breeds, at least of the Cirnechi is the strong health! No diseases at all like with created breeds.

Thank you for the video(also this was really pleasant to watch, amazing quality) -ive been in a really bad place because I got out of the mental hospital ONLY because of the plan to get a service dog. I got one from a shelter and I have so many mixed feeling twords her. One we have a trainer were currently working with her, but nothing has changed. She is so sweet and cuddly and BIG! Sje causes me hafe the problems in my day to day life and im already in a bad spot. Ive had her for 4 months now and we had another dog that is over a year and she fought with them, so now we have to keep them apart. The trainer is going to be working on that two but I just feel so defeated. She is a pitbull hound mix so shes dumb and smart in all the worst ways. I can't handle her but also can't give her away because shes so sweet and cute(im a big animal lover.) Do you have any advice? Its always a yelling battle between my parents when I bring this up. I also have to get her certified before I go off to college so its not like I have tons of time to do that:(

My pharaoh hound rescue (possible mix but dang - he looks exactly like a PH) is similar with people! I love that he is gentle with everyone, doesn't react, and absolutely adores other dogs, but he is cautious around people, especially when they approach. If they're chilling in the house on his favorite sofa, he'll probably join after a while but it takes some time! It's okay to be a dog that needs to build trust. Now that he trusts me, he is so loving, cuddly, and playful.

Oh, I feel the exact same way. Only I sometimes hate my dog, even though she does almost nothing wrong. She is a great dog (her recall could use some work, but other than that …). I like our family’s other dogs (most of the time), but having this one with me constantly is driving me crazy. She is so F-ing slow. And loses SO MUCH fur. The fact that I sometimes hate her makes me feel so horrible amd guilty. She’s always happy to see me and comforts me when I’m sad, and I always just see negative things.

Interesting, I had never heard of the egyptomania art craze in Europe and its effect of the sighthound popularity! Great lesson. I know that movies cause popularity in breeds, in Australia where I'm from we had "Oddball" a movie about a maremma, and "Red Dog" a movie about a red Kelpie which spiked their popularity. Unfortunately for the breeds there is always a fallout from people who cannot take proper care and rehome them. But on the whole movies and celebrities certainly influence breed popularity. I was also reminded of Jenna Marbles, a KZbin personality about 10 years ago who owned an Italian Greyhound, which made them very fashionable.

Thanks for this interesting view of dogs from the lense of an art historian. I'd be curious to know if there were any artist depictions of the pharaoh hound by monks in Malta, since from what I understand, they sometimes depicted mundane scenes of everyday life in their surrounds? Perhaps a hound depicted in the margins of an old script?

I wouldn't be able to handle this Pharaoh hound stray that I found when she was a puppy if I lived anywhere else other than the 20 acres that I live on the big island. She has boundless energy and she runs like the wind. And like you say the prey drive on these dogs is off the charts she's a great bird hunting dog. She tracks hogs up here too but she's has a healthy fear of these wild boars in these mountains

Really appreciate your videos. I'm considering a Pharaoh. They're not exactly common, and practical visual info like this is hard to come by! Do you think there might be a future video focusing on their behavioral tendencies with their owners? I love to cuddle with my dogs, and from the research I've done, Pharaohs aren't the most keen on that. Every dog is an individual, but hearing and reading that they don't exactly relish physical affection makes me feel like I may have to reassess my breed choice :(

Hi!! Thank you for your comment, so glad you like my videos! In the development videos (I have two) I touch on it a little bit but I could definitely go more in depth! I would say that pharaoh hounds are affectionate but in their own way, the ones I have meet likes to have their personal space and cuddles when they feel like it. But if you want a real teddy bear they might not be the right fit. My dog sleeps next to me / on top of me at night which is cozy but during the day he only wants fuzz once in a while!

@@yodayoda73 It’d be whack if that was the determining factor, I agree! I’m very physically active (in my personal life, and as a requirement of my work), and I feel they’d be a perfect companion for me (lure coursing/agility are very attractive to me as an additional structured activity). I’m just wondering (as someone who has little experience with sighthounds) if they’re completely averse to physical affection.

Oh a year with a pharaoh, how amazing!!! We are fortunate that Malik don’t mind being home alone, I think he actually enjoys it! Have you tried giving him a tasty Kong, freeze it and once he is really into to it you leave (don’t say anything to him) for 2 minutes or less and hopefully he will continue with it and not even notice that you leave?! Then you gradually go up to 5 minutes etc! Just a suggestion, that’s how we trained Malik to be home alone 😃
