A very interesting perspective from someone who has dedicated his life to music and has been in the business for over 40 years. From drumming for a band in the Village, to learning guitar, to singer/songwriter, to licensing his music to TV shows, Joi has had quite an impressive career.

If your'e the head of game security why don't you do something about the blatant cheating going on in UO. It is still owned by EA not Broadsword. They can't handle the level of cheating going on, step up and help and do your job.

Saying that javascript is single threaded has created so much confussion. Typically when people say javascript they mean the entire runtime which is multithreaded.

When asked about what he'd like to see, my brain went imediately to one thing - just give me an Option. It's not the deepest thing, and I don't care if other monads are implemented or not, but there is just too much friction and too many footguns in the '?' syntax. You might define an interface where a fields value is, say, `string | null` and define the field as `field?: string` thinking, "Oh, the field does not need to be defined and this looks elegant," but this not really what expresses the original design. `Option<string>` is what was needed.

I work in tech and while I wasn't the highest paid, it was steady. For get rich quick schemes, I know a few who went to church and social gatherings (fam, friends, students) on MLMs. It was not steady $ and risky.

Yea tech you can definitely make money in a legit fashion. I think the promise that a bootcamp will get you an easy job is oversold though. It's quite difficult to get in now, but you can through persistence and effort.

I consider the man to be THE expert when it comes to JS, and he has taught me a helllllllll of a whole lot, but I am a little hung up on that initial take on TS. Having a complete and deep understanding of JS's type system is one thing, actually keeping track of all the types and the shape of all the data across a large codebase is another thing entirely. This is where that static analysis comes in handy (and JSDoc is a poor substitute for TS here IMO). Then there's the whole circus that comes with working on a codebase as a team. I can definitely understand that it's not the ideal tool, but IMHO it's orders of magnitude better than JS in 99% of the use cases a regular JS developer would run into. And I definitely agree it's a crutch, but I don't think it's a crutch for a knowledge gap, rather it helps us keep better track of the data we're working with so we can focus on building features and fixing non-TypeError bugs.

So true. Most don't understand how this profession isn't something we can complete on auto-pilot. People make mistakes and it should be expected and tolerated to a certain amount.

Great pod!!! Yall asked some good questions and was cool to hear Jonathan's background, experience, and his view especially with regards to unity, nfts, and AI. Yall brought up a good point tho that games are teaching kids/adults to gamble. Helped me see things differently especially as someone who is a fan of crypto and wants to eventually monetize an indie multi-player game. Thanks for the content!!!

Fantastic interview. Very insightful. The fact that she said she still deals with imposter syndrome at her level and skills with CSS is reassuring that others with expertise deal with it too. And I thought her take on entrepreneurship was interesting - her parents were entrepreneurs and that didn't pass on to her in a positive way. Everybody's different.
