I was attempting to hear Vivian Lee's actual voice but turn this video off because the woman doing the video wouldn't stop talking to actually show anything.

I often mention the Advanced TV Herstory podcast in conversation for two reasons. First, while I love TV and movies, I’ve realized how much I still don’t know about women’s contributions to the industry. Second, hearing these stories through the perspective of host Cynthia Bemis Abrams and her guests always feels refreshingly authentic and honest. I am still new to the Podcasts scene, but with shows like this, I can easily understand all the excitement.

Annie Potts' organization, The Heart Channels, holds the grassroots potential to make a true person-to-person impact. With support, it can mean a significant difference in someone's life. Growing up in The Bronx, I know the importance of being noticed and what an opportunity means. Amidst the chaos we see today, Annie Potts inspires hope. Thanks to @advancedtvherstory for sharing this moving episode, and Thank You Annie Potts, and @theheartchannels for joining those voices that constantly remind us that the world is not lost.

I think we can agree that mallory nailed her performance as lamb chop. She has completely followed into her mother's footsteps. When it comes to voicing lamb chop, both of their voices seem identical. I literally can't tell them apart. In a way, Shari is still alive through both her daughter and her puppet. I bet she would be so proud of how her daughter is carrying on her career and legacy.

Mallory, I saw your mom perform at the Sahara Hotel in Vegas in the 1960’s when she opened for Roger Miller. She did a dance with a manikin in a tuxedo and a top hat. The way she danced with this manikin appeared as though she was dancing with a real person. Congratulations on writing the book. She was a great performer!

1983 was a very special time in my life. The Diana Ross concert in Central Park, though I was not there, I have slot of memories from that time. The #1 song on the charts was I'll be Watching You by the Police, at it's third if 8 weeks st #1. #2 was Electric Avenue by Eddy Grant, #3 was Flash dance by Irene Cara, #4 was Never gonna let You Go by Sergio Mendez, and #5 was Wanna be Starting' Something' by the late Michael.Jackson. Other notable songs were, Our Bus by Mad, at #7, Sweet Dreams are made of These by The Eurythmics, at #11, which would hit #1 by Labor Day Weekend, ending The Police's 8 week reign st #1. 1983 was a very hot summer, and these thunderstorms that cut short the Diana Ross concert, also brought an end to a stifling heat wave which had been gripping the region for over a week. Most of those songs can still be heard on the radio now, specifically on radio stations that specialize in 70's and 80's songs. These songs should also bring back.memories of those days. Diane Ross also had a hit at that time with Pieces of Ice at #35.

Thanks so much for this, Cynthia. Appreciate your fair, balanced and loving tribute to LM. For an excellent resource on Liza's TV appearances, please check out Scott Schechter's book, "The Liza Minnelli Scrapbook". It contains a thorough, well-researched, if not scholarly, look at almost everything Liza did on TV. If you feel impressed at what KZbin has to offer on Liza's TV work, wait until you see the information in Schechter's book. :)

875,000 was the original day 1 crowd count. It’s a million people. 600,000 returned the next day rain free. Even Billboard Mag got the numbers wrong. The concert was for building a playground which is still in Central Park today.
@advancedtvherstory2 жыл бұрын
The whole concert was distributed in theaters for a 2-day run back in 2019. It's been unavailable ever since, but I sure am curious about what extras may have been included.

To think of all the big name artist that have had concerts in Central Park. Yet this is the one still talked about. That is the sheer definition of ICONIC from an ICON...

And I am pretty sure that of all the Central Park concerts from that era, Diana was the only solo performer of color.

I was 5 years old. I remember watching Romper room. And I remember seeing her getting on/off a plane in another country. At the time I knew nothing of babies and Thalidomide, but I knew it was important somehow because I still remember it. Clear as day. And memories all in black and white.

This was indeed a chilling wake up call of women's healthcare decision making, medicine, public policy and television. I too was young at the time. Thanks for sharing your perspective as those memories became clear, and of course, thanks for listening.

I was unable to see the documentary "Diana Ross: Her Life, Love and Legacy" when it played in spring 2019, but I do wish she'd write a book that really tells us what she was thinking and why she made certain decisions. This is real life leadership wisdom from which everyone can learn.

Awesome discussion. I love and respect Diana Ross with every fiber of my dreadlocked being. For me, the central park show was the first black girl/woman holiday. I burst into tears as soon as she creeps on the stage to the African drums and the Bernice Johnson little black girls dance troupe. Excellent.

@@kevinmansell8746 IMHO Diana Ross is totally overlooked for the depth of experience she brings to everything she does - as a performer, a woman, a creative, self-made person of color. She knew her audience that day.
