I made lovely tomato stands for my local show Phil, as I saw them used last year, and was told they are not allowed 😡 looking forward to see other competitors faces tomorrow 🍅 time we had national standards. Black cloth also not allowed 🤔 I hope I can use my rings for the onions as I doubt 6 will fit on a paper plate😂
@philburgess605Ай бұрын
At the nationals they have display trays for Toms n shallots etc so they are all the same. You use your own for the large onions but there is a height limit which I can’t remember off hand but it’s in the rules on the entry form. Hope you did well at your local👍

Fantastic results Phil, I always enjoy watching your videos and learning about showing and especially how to prepare for them, as there’s not much information out there, so thank you for sharing. Did my first ever local show at the end of July and really enjoyed the experience.

That’s the idea -to help improve growing. I’ve mentioned before but if you become a nvs member they have a website with videos showing from seed to showing on all the main veg. I refer to them all the time. Good luck with your growing adventures to come👍😊

I use a silky black cloth that doesn’t crease. I get it from hobbycraft in their material section😊👍

Brilliant video Phil. Very neat and tidy you have things. Hope you don't mind me asking but where did you get the supports from that are round the beans please Phil. Could do with some for the onions next year. That's if Botrytis doesn't spoil things. Cheers Phil.
@philburgess6052 ай бұрын
Thanks John. I’ve kindly been given the supports. They were from a super successful local veg grower who has sadly passed away now. He had had them for many years. They are very expensive to buy now!

who's strain of onions are they phil thanks
@philburgess6053 ай бұрын
Hi Mark. This years are from a head of pips that were from an onion plant I gave to a local pal. That plant was from a pip produced by an onion grown from seed by a pal in Derbyshire who got the seed from Peter Holden. Sometimes PH strain can have a dimpled base but the one put down to seed didn’t. You can get away with growing a lot less if you can grow from pips. Not sure how many generations it takes before you can call it your own strain!!

Lovely onions there Phil mate 👌 have you a local show. Lost all my large onions for local show to Botrytis. I grow outside so its hard getting nice onions. Trying inside my large polytunnel next year Phil. Might pick your brain out setting up in there 👍👌😉
@philburgess6053 ай бұрын
Hi John. Don’t hesitate to ask anything. My videos should pretty much cover the full onion growing season. A onion would love to grow throughout the growing season between 15 and 23c and trying to keep near that is the tricky bit! (Also no water near the base) My local show is 31st Aug. But my main aim is the National this year down Sussex 21st Sept!

Great video phil 👍 what did you think of the onions grown in the autopots ?
@philburgess6053 ай бұрын
Just decided to put two in sort of last minute! Glad I did. Think they edged growth wise those in the raised bed. Also I now know should I have problems going forward with the soil (getting bit of pink root)in the raised bed I can easily switch to pots. Of the two one had boytritis. So if I do grow in auto pots again I will stop the watering much sooner.👍
@johnnoble76103 ай бұрын
Lovely stuff there phil great onions. I've lost all 7 of my local show onions to Botrytis gutted 😢
@philburgess6053 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear that. I never water near the base. I stop watering 3 weeks before pull up. Also remove split skins as they split then tear away the last bit from the bottom after a couple of days plus keep soil away from the bottom of the onion as much as possible also have a fan coming on for half an hour 2/3 times a day. Time I get an onion to a show I’ve earnt it!!

@philburgess6054 ай бұрын
Hi John. No feed once in the raised bed. The raised bed had leek n onion fert a few weeks before planting out. I did sprinkle 4/5 slow release prills in thr bottom of each potting hole. I may give a small potash feedin the next two weeks depending on how there going. They will have no water once there two weeks from lifting👍

Nice growing but with all respect that is not a tiny garden. I wouldn't even say small. I could only wish for a garden like yours as I am so restricted its frustrating not being able to grow enough produce.
@Leigh335 ай бұрын
You have some serious growing going on for a Tiny Veg Plot 👍🏴 Ive had to de-bramble and utilise a patch in the field behind our house to accommodate my main crop potatoes, sweetcorn and brassicas as I literally had no room left. I even have carrots, parsnips and lettuce in containers on the roof of my shed. Away from carrot fly and closer to the sun 😂😂😂. Your stuff looks amazing mate... bravo 👏

Glad I found this video, I am having a go at growing giant onions for the first time and was wondering about straightening them up, so the tip about using another stick and a bit of plastic is very helpful to me, so thanks for that.

Hi Pete. Fab that’s what my vids are for to help newer growers👍😊. Mine are grown for exhibition so have to be perfectly straight but I know the world record boys do keep them supported though they wouldn’t cull a large one if it wasn’t straight😊

hi Phil Just came over from Ali's Channel, My Rusty Garden. Great set up you got there, I have never grown onions from pips as never been able to get them. Must admit onions are one of my favourites to grow . We just lost one of our Cavaliers Bailey he was just coming up to 13. Just subscribed as well. 👍👍👍👍👍🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
@philburgess6059 ай бұрын
Hi Rob sorry to hear about your cavalier (though 13 is a good age for them)They have a lovely relaxed character. The onion pips are really specific for exhibiting as they grow so uniform from them. Shaving the seed head around pollination time encourages the seed head/onion to produce them. Ie shave the head so it looks like a thistle head! Happy growing this year😊👍. Phil

@@philburgess605 He was our oldest Cava. I normally grow Ailsae for my big onions (biggest as been just under 6lb) but I grow them outside. I have converted my attic into a grow room, if you get chance you might like to pop over to my channel and see it. 👍👍👍👍👍
