I had the Tech 21 vt bass d.i. and i regret selling it !!! It sounded better, more real !!!!
@EmanCarbone
@EmanCarbone 3 жыл бұрын
Yes... I think it's one of those things you can end up selling because you don't fully understand how it works or it doesn't sound that "nice" in your bedroom but you haven't really used it in context. Said that, it's not for everyone, especially if you need a transparent, hifi preamp to go DI. When you say "it sounded better", what are you referring to as comparison?

can i get jamerson/motown tone with this pedal? greetings from brazil
@EmanCarbone
@EmanCarbone 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes, you can add some grit or tubey/vintage console warmth while turning the highs a bit down. However, you first need flatwound strings and if possible a P bass. Check my brief demo of the flats in the video (around the middle, see timeline) and you can get an idea - that line I played is quite Motown-ish. To be true, a D.I. straight into a vintage console is what was actually used for Motown takes on records, if I'm not wrong. What you mainly hear is Jamerson's style and his P with old flats.

@@EmanCarbone Thank you very much! Im a beginner and Im doing my research to buy my first preamp pedal. I have narrow down to a few options from Tech 21 (which are easy to get here in Brazil): VT Bass, Geddy Lee DI-2112 and Steve Harris SH-1. Have you tried these preamp pedals? Could you help me choose? I was about to buy the VT Bass but after I watched the Steve HArris pedal videos going through the suggested presets (which include awesome sounds sound from Harris, Geezer Butler, Jamerson, Deep Purple Lemmy and Thin Lizzy) Im in doubt again. Can I achieve these sounds with the VT Bass?

I like the tone you get with it. I once owned a vt di and didn’t like it back then. Probably because that was when I first start playing with some drive and I used to play with a jazz bass. I play with P bass now and I know what I’m doing with eq and drive so I guess I will have to try it again 😂😂

Hey!! Glad to find some more fingerstyle players on the Bass VI. Is the string spacing a bit wider to accommodate the thicker gauge, or is it about the same or narrower than regular spacing for an electric guitar?
@EmanCarbone
@EmanCarbone 3 жыл бұрын
It is around the same as an electric guitar. Different Bass VI makes and models might have different spacings, as is the case for guitars and bass in general, anyway. Gauge-wise, at the moment I have 95 for the low E, which is thicker than one might assume - it's basically like a light gauge low E for traditional bass guitars, on a 30" scale of course.

it occurred to me that playing with fingers the bassvi isn't that different from playing an acoustic guitar. When I didn't have a bass I picked an acoustic guitar and played like that. A mix between classical technique and bass.

I own this pedal along with four other Tech21 pedals and along with my Leeds pedal it is my favourite pedal. I just play and record at home and I always keep the EQ flat for my general breakup tone and only ever adjust the Drive and Character. If I was looking for an overdriven tone using the Drive and Character I would then bring the EQ into play like you have described just to compensate.
@EmanCarbone

That's what I tried to get across in the video... I still see many different approaches and ways to review it around and the "copy the manual settings" method to me doesn't quite work, keeping into account how different instruments and setups can sound dramatically different. Those are just reference points. I'd love to try the "guitar" character pedals on bass too, they don't have a dramatic low-end roll-off as an actual guitar cab I.R. so I guess they work quite well. I got some good feedback on the Blonde (Fender) on bass, and California (Mesa) too for fat tones.
@fendersunburst4832
@fendersunburst4832 3 жыл бұрын
@@EmanCarbone Yeah I used to own quite a few which could be used for Bass at one time or another and in the character series I now only own the VT Bass Deluxe and the Leeds which is based on a Hiwatt 103 amp and is great if you are looking for that Entwistle Tommy era tone. I also liked the Oxford which is based on a Orange but wasn't to keen on the Liverpool and the Blonde. I am glad I kept hold of the Leeds as it has now been discontinued with other pedals in that series. But the VT Bass Deluxe is a great pedal if you know how to set it up properly and I love using it with my P Bass strung with TI's with slight breakup.........It sounds wicked!

Great comparison! Do you still prefer Pribora? I have the same Road worn bass and tried a bunch of pickups around and I always back to original pickups for their tone. But always feel like I'm not 100% happy... What I dislike at many aftermarket pickups(dimarzio especially) is strong magnetic field that effect tone. I feel like tone is no more freely and relax, like pickups magnets grab the strings kinda... What your feeling about Pribora's magnetic field? Thank you! P.S. BTW pretty sure Fender used Polysol wire for these pickups.
@EmanCarbone
@EmanCarbone 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your interest and sorry for my late reply. I did like the Pribora, but I currently have the Duncan SPB1 installed, as I think they are a bit smoother and the bass is quite bright and open itself. You won't go wrong re. magnetic field on a SPB1: it's not the SPB3, it is made per vintage specs and has a very balanced medium output, and for many it is one of the benchmarks for "classic" P bass tone. Very versatile. Also, check the distance between your pickup and the strings for magnetic pull.

This is a comparison between three flavours of "vintage-based" alnico V Precision pickups. The stock pickups are honest Fender alnico pickups factory installed in Classic/Road Worn instruments as well as American Standard basses made before 2012, when Fender changed their factory specs to Custom Shop pickups. The current American Professional series features the newer V-Mod pickup, with alnico II and V magnets. Duncan's SPB-1 are a great value for money solution which features plain enamel wire. To my ears, the sound is smooth and very focused on the midrange, with silky lows and tame highs. Alexander Pribora's pickups are a great surprise: I discovered them a couple of years ago and took the plunge to try them. He is a small "boutique" builder based in Moscow, focusing on Fender replacements who is especially well regarded within the Strat and Tele communities. His scatter-wound pickups are an amazing value for money and available through eBay or his own website: www.priborapickups.com Based on my own personal taste and experience, I favour Pribora's pickup as it features both the attack and brightness of Fender's pickups and the body, warmth and definition of Duncan's take on vintage Precision sound. These qualities are often found when people describe boutique-made brands such as Lindy Fralin, who shares very similar specs on paper. It is especially evident in loud live settings within a band, as it retains definition and helps to cut through the mix. On the other hand, Duncan's SPB-1 are a great choice and Fender's stock pickups are fully capable of providing good tone, in my opinion. No real losers here, to be honest.
