People in the chat rules lawyering about how the spell shouldn't work are just telling on themselves for completely misunderstanding what the game is about. Laura simply put a Jester flavor on the spell that succeeded. Matt taking that flavor to punish the player and making it not succeed would be an insanely poor choice. "Yeah, sucks for you for RPing at this table!! Based on a technicality the spell you succeeded with after passing several checks and baiting the hag into wanting what you offered is now a failure because you made it fit your character. You almost created an amazing moment with your disarmingly happy and charming trickster cleric, tricking and feeding an enchanted baked good to a misery hag and giving her the memory of a good time in your company." Or what are those people trying to argue there? The moment is so perfect considering everything Jester is and how Laura played it by outsmarting the DM without treating him as an enemy and creating the moment together with him. It's a once in a lifetime DnD play. You don't ruin that as a DM.

sooo much respect for matt. regardless of any frustration or disappointment about future plans, in the end the game should be fun, and him letting this moment happen anyways is a really awesome DM move in my book. laura played it so well and i think she earned this win. good play, matt :)

I find it really funny people trying to rules lawyer in the comments. Because your comment really didn't matter things happened. Rules were forgotten whatever it made a very legendary moment.

Let's also not forget, Matt is big enough as a DM to look past his plans for a big encounter and to recognize when a player has outmaneuvered him. he isnt stubbornly finding excuses and ways to railroad the game to demand that they really trade something or fight the hag, which many people would. not everyone is that reasonable or able to conceive of entertaining paths forward and improvising in the moment to make it work. Many would fudge the role and say it didn't work and force combat.

Watching chat, the rules Nazi's are going crazy. DnD is supposed to be entertaining and the DM can modify in the moment, this was one of those moments, just let it go.

Everyone in chat that was screaming things like “legendary resistances?!” forgets: rule of cool trumps all. No DM in their right mind would shut this moment down.

I only just recently watched this episode (I'm watching through the campaign for the first time) and I was driving while listening to this episode and was punching the air and yelling to myself when Matt said she succeeded. However, watching this with chat is really disappointing seeing how many people as she's talking to the hag are just being so negative, calling out rules, saying it shouldn't work like that, so on and so forth. Matt can decide for himself whether to let it work or not and in this situation, you just have to respect that power play and I'm sure that's why he let it slide. The amount of subscribed people watching this in chat being that way is astounding

I remember watching this episode and thinking, "Man. Beau is not recovering. Even knowing this is a win. I think there's something else going on here. I sure hope Matt or some one plans an intervention." It made much more sense watching the campaign wrap up and Marisha explained how she associated Beaus brother TJ with her real life family member. I think in this episode, she went to a really dark place. Anyway, I don't know what I'm trying to say, other than I love this group of misfits, both in and out of character.

I'm still getting a T for Teen vibe instead of M for Mature, there's no blood, no finishers, all the particle effects seemed very fun instead of visceral. The tactical mode was severely lacking, looks like they went back to DA2 with only being able to tell companions what moves to use instead of in-depth tactics like Origins or even Inquisition. Glad to see character backgrounds are back and the action side of combat looks good, so I'm still hopeful but this left a lot to be desired for me.

everyone like 'she couldn't cast spells' are misunderstanding the function of a Somatic element to casting. You need to have a [hand] free because mechanically, the ability to cast a spell with a somatic component is meant to be considered wielding a weapon, and the way we typically wield a weapon is with our hands. It's not because you need HANDS specifically, it's just the shorthand (hah) we use to discuss 'available equipment slots' for damage-doing items in the game's mechanics. But hands aren't necessary: your character could still fight as a monk with their arms/elbows/knees instead of fists, or commission a wrist-mounted crossbow instead of a 'hand crossbow' that you can activate by aiming and pressing something with your other wrist on the back etc. It's all just flavouring - the mechanics are the same still - so the same goes with 'somatic' elements of spells. If your character really has no hands, that doesn't mean they literally can't do any spells anymore, as long as they are not equipped with the equivalent of something two-handed :P Up to the DM how you want to proceed from there in terms or re-flavouring your abilities, possibly changing subclasses or making adjustments for things to make sense in-world. Definitely need to have a convo out-of-game to work out what can and can't be done, and what needs to be adjusted etc., but there's no reason you couldn't MECHANICALLY still have your character able to cast spells or fight - just a matter of learning how to do things differently, getting equipment adjusted, etc. There will be some things that you can't do eg Jester would struggle with her magic paints (though i guess she could use her mouth to hold the brush, but it would be very slow), and maybe trade that with someone else - or paint herself a hand in a paintbrush-holding grip or with an open palm for casting spells.

This is an excellent example of what the phrase, “it doesn’t matter whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game” means. You play the game in a manner that facilitates you being invited to more games in the future. That’s why sportsmanship matters. You might win this game or this battle by underhanded tactics or strict rule lawyering, but when you’re not invited back to play again, you lose the metaphorical war. Rules are a great structure for games but in a game like this, strictly adhering to them in all situations won’t keep the game fun for 99% of players. The meta game, the game above the game is playing as epic characters, telling a great story, and making fun and interesting memories together. The DM’s job is to facilitate those things. Give them a road map for those memories to happen along. To challenge them in fun and unique ways. And when your players attempt and pull off epic strategies that also fit into the narrative and are brilliant displays of their individual character’s traits, you gotta let rule of cool ride. You gotta reward the creativity, the grit, the gutsy play, so they will take those risks/fun ideas and go for those epic moments when the opportunities present themselves in the future.

What was up with Marisha during this episode I wonder. She looks so completely out of it. Drunk? High? Stoned?
@TheRealMichaelH

Beau/Marisha had her turn with the hag earlier, and she'd offered to walk away from the Mighty Nein and the Cobalt Soul in order to spend the rest of her life alone and miserable, as she had been when she was first taken from her home. She was going to sacrifice herself, because she thought it would satisfy the hag without hurting anyone else (unlike Nott/Sam's plan to restart the war), and she was already mourning the loss both in and out of character. So when Jester/Laura saved the day like this, it caused emotional whiplash for her. It's mentioned at 15:29 in this video, and it was confirmed in the next episode, when they camped in the swamp. They discussed all of it, in character, at length. But it's so nice of you to assume that Marisha is just a stoner…

A modified memory doesn't necessarily affect how a creature behaves, particularly if the memory contradicts the creature's natural inclinations, alignment, or beliefs. An illogical modified memory, such as implanting a memory of how much the creature enjoyed dousing itself in acid, is dismissed, perhaps as a bad dream.

I didn't start watching Critical Role until 2021 and wasn't there for this stream, but I'm willing to bet real money that like at least 50% of the chatters spamming "Laura don''t do it, this is stupid!" or telling the other party members "Stop her!" immediately flipped on a dime and started saying "Let's go Jester! Let's go Laura Bailey! I never doubted you for a second!" Fuck those meta-gaming, backseating, doubting motherfuckers 😂
