The opening of this track is like a swell of golden light spilling into every nook and cranny of my mind and then spilling further into my heart. It feels like a love song floating out from a dream that is unsure where to land or a longing searching for answers that are felt, but not yet seen. Its gentle rhythms rock like a lullaby and its repeated calls (‘yours is a path I’d like to cross’) gather strength and depth as they layer and loop and echo over each other like a mantra, a trance, a repeating hope. A bewitching song of paths and possibilities whose warmth belies the frozen beauty of its lyrics. I just love how this song ends the album. It doesn’t feel like an ending so much as a new beginning. Spring awakening Winter’s heart. 😊 The album overall: listening to Shallow is like reading an Emily Dickinson poem: I can never guess which word will come next or what the rhythms of speech will be, but I’m startled and in awe at the directions they take. It feels like she is slowing her life down so she can trace her way back to her essential self, wresting beauty from ugliness and healing from heartache. She sings softly (‘so many voices stronger than mine‘), but her voice is her own and has a strength and delicacy that is impossibly beautiful. The songs feel deeply honest and intimate as they slowly shape-shift their way from doubt to possibility. As each song unfolds, they often seem to extend beyond the personal to the universal (‘I was more an ocean than a boat When I was more of everyone Of everyone with eyes closed’). The musical arrangement and instrumentation are freaky good (kudos especially to those who created ‘If I’m’ - it’s some kind of genuis). Anyway, I’m just a finger pointing to the moon. Listen if you can. It’s such a special album and a wonderful offering to the world. Thank you Sea🤍

I’m so struck by this song and can’t help but marvel at how it unfolds and evolves. The mood at the beginning feels resigned, but deeply reflective, like a song finally ready to be sung in full knowledge of what’s passed. The soft, lilting, breathy vocals double-tracked against a high, angelic voice are just unbelievably beautiful as they rise and fall and swell and merge like waves into an enormous sea. There’s also a piano calmly releasing its notes like it has all the time in the world, while strings shimmer with life and light in the background. But at the same time, the words and phrases are long-drawn out and sad too, like a sigh that can’t stop. And the lyrics are as deceptive as the deceptions they hint at. And there’s a looming sense of unease that builds from the opening line. And the changes in tempo and intonation are like sudden realisations. And the song’s last, most drawn out word (‘hide’), is like an exhalation from poison. But the coda instrumental feels like healing. I just love the piano arpeggios at the end, especially when they change key as if to signify evolution and new directions. At its core, the song seems to be about working through trauma and trying to make sense of what happened in order to heal. Taking things apart so that they can be put back together again, but in the right way. It feels like a great, deliberate turning away from dark to light. Of someone leaving their shadow while the other keeps theirs. This feels like a deeply personal song, but also a fable for our times to help heal and inspire others.

I was captured as if under a spell by this song’s gorgeous tonal modulations, soft vocals and dreamy rhythmic heartbeat. At the same time, it felt as if there was a subtle but persistent discord underneath it all. What are those creepy discordant strings at the start and elsewhere, creating a sense of unease? They almost sound as if each note is crawling away from the other, like a person trying to slide away from people at a party, or someone shying away from a relationship. I love how in the final lines, there seems to be a shift from the personal to the universal: ‘I was more an ocean than a boat When I was more of everyone Of everyone with eyes closed.’ I feel I know exactly what these lines mean, but I can’t for the life of me explain them. Like I’m under the same spell again!

I feel like I’m being spooled into a dream, with its gentle self-questionings that seem to arise like a fully-formed poem directly from the musician’s artistic heart. It’s like hearing an intimate, internal conversation as she mulls over past relationships and personal growth before shifting to deeper questions of identity and existence. This is masterful songwriting that captures the conflict between doubt and hope, like a seed unsure whether it will grow into the beautiful flower it was always meant to be.

This is like a salve to the soul, offering hope and comfort in times of anxiety and self-doubt. The lilting guitar picking and soft airy wash of sounds feel like they’re supporting a deep down longing as she sings. ‘To Hold’ feels like I’m being held by someone who cares and forgives and is infinitely wise. And on the ‘And I’ll try’ refrain, I’m holding my breath as she turns towards the sublime🙏

I love how her voice wavers, sways, stretches and distorts as if caught by the same dreamy ripples that leave her floating ‘in the wake of an angelfish’. Or the fun wordplay when her voice drops on the ‘low’ of ‘shallow’. Or how you can’t tell where the music starts and her voice begins at the song’s opening. Or how she’s joined by the most perfectly restrained male voice on the ‘And I’ and ‘alone’ lyrics towards the end. Shallow feels like it’s playing with voices and instruments like dappled light in a magic mountain stream.

This sounds like a faery-child’s singsong, and butterflies dancing in a rainbow, and kids skipping along, and angels dreaming together, and a double-bass waking up, and merry-go-rounds syncopating, and pianos tinkling, and strings shivering, and a hundred other things I don’t know how to describe, but make me feel like a child again - so light and mysterious and wonderful.

'sea when absent'was the best album of 2014 for me. Why is it so underrated?
@Zeokoz6 ай бұрын
I have felt for a decade now that this band is immensely overlooked... But I'm biased, cuz Ashes Grammar is easily in my top 5 albums of all time haha. But really their whole discography is full of masterpieces in my opinion...

@@Zeokoz I'm glad that there are people who have the same opinion. I think that's right. Even after 10 years, I still listen to their music a lot.

Even if I was right Even if I was wrong Even if I couldn't write Would you still love? So, move with the tide of the sea And prove all your thoughts to the tide And hide all of your lies Behind tired eyes Wondering if she was here Wondering if she knows She moves like the river flow We are all tied to the sea Moonrocks wash up on the shore So, hide all of your lies Behind tired eyes Searching for herself at night She doesn't even see the evening Moonrocks fall aside at night She doesn't see the evening [Breakdown] So, move with the tide of the sea And prove all your thoughts to the shore And hide all of your lies Behind tired eyes

Fvck, I've listened to this masterpiece like 15years ago, daily, many times, sometimes on repeat. If I only knew that by now I'll be addicted for over a decade on hard drvgs and really facing crippling, dare I say clinical depression, severe anxiety and PTSD syndromes, where only a needle can ease the pain and seriously planning to off myself... I always liked to experiment, but man, I would have never guessed I'll hit so low... I wish to go back in time that 15 years when it was only teenage angst and pot.

May i recommend a book 'feeling great' by david burns. I do not have anxiety or depression but read it to learn it better. Very well reasearched, practical book not some cliche self help. And time, things always change like say you arent same as you were a decade ago, you wont be same either after a decade. This shall pass too.
