If I imagine I can fly, then it is at least possible that I can fly? Even for a philosopher this is exceptional garbage. It starts with undefined terms: What exactly is this „me“? He seems to suggest it is a soul - something that is independent of the body. Something for which there is no evidence, instead of describing it as what it is: our consciousness, running on the neural wetware in our heads. Of course these two are not identical: you can loose parts of your body (e.g. a finger or a toe) without relevant impact to your persona, bigger damages to your body might cause trauma. However, loosing only a small specific part of your body, i.e. the brain, and your „me“ is gone or severely damaged. The causality of specific brain damages for specific changes to the „me“ has been well established. So no, sitting in your basement and making shit up in the form of impressive world salad doesn‘t make you relevant compared to real scientists. A classical case of religous nuttery.

It’s 14 years later and eliminative materialism still cannot explain basic experiences like the taste of mint. I used to believe in EM when I was younger. Sorry Dr. Churchland, consciousness is fundamental and cannot be explained by physical processes. This approach has not shed any light the “hard problem of consciousness “ as espoused by Chalmers as well.

Various studies show that the visual system of the brain has been completely mapped and there was no place that could be responsible for unifying perceptions. A metaphysical explanation is necessary. "There is now overwhelming biological and behavioral evidence that the brain contains no stable, high-resolution full field representation of a visual scene, even though that is what we subjectively experience (Martinez-Conde et al. 2008). 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹 (Kaas and Collins 2003) and 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. The subjective experience is thus inconsistent with the neural circuitry." " All of the proposed computational theories of variable binding are quite complex and none have experimental support... Essentially all the experiments on visual feature binding involve subjective judgments-the subject is asked to report what he saw. This leads some investigators to claim that a neural model of feature-binding is at least the core of a solution to currently unsolvable mind-brain problem." www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3538094/

Bond villain!! Sartre was a cool thing of Les Marais of young rich parisian annoying kuds. He was cool writer less than a philo. The "nothing" argoument is very clever intuition for startin the contemporaneity. He was into Huysman kind of attirude but he understand the dandysm and La Grand Art was finish, some kind of loser dandy. Liser bohemiens after Baudelaire and Rimbaud. Jazzy meaningless at bars at Les Marais.

Churchland makes two errors: 1) "Consciousness" is not the same thing as "thought" or "cognitive behavior." Consciousness is "understanding" or "unique perspective" (see Penrose on his views). If eliminative philosophy were true, "perspective" would have no reason to exist, yet it does. Essentially, we'd be androids. 2) Using the word "illusory" to describe consciousness may be antiquated or ill-suited. Even if consciousness doesn't work the way we thought, there'd be no reason to eliminate consciousness as an "illusion."

If you consider what he's saying deeply, it doesn't actually explain anything. I have a background in neuroscience and what's he's saying is the binding is simply a trick of the brain. But brain science can't explain the trick. There is a complex interplay between brain, body, environment. And so to simply point to the brain mechanisms and say it's all happening inside the black box, misses the complexity of this complex interaction and impoverishes consciousness, which is far from being explained according to brain science. But within the field, there is a lot of interesting discussions and neuroscientists admit they don't know what's going on so the field is much more open to alternative views other than simply reductionism than Dan Dennett might admit.

Conceivable doesn't mean possible. I can conceive some people born with magic, but it's not possible. It's a bit of a mystery about what added ingredient to conceivable is needed to make something possible. In this case, it's not possible, because it is never the case, a posteriori, that there is ever a mind without a physical body. It's not possible because it never happens, or maybe better phrased: If it were possible, then it would have happened at least once. It has never happened, therefore it's impossible.

I'm thinking.....the mind can be severed from the body by nerves and such so perhaps if we consider the mind and its inner thoughts/functions different from what we consider the body and its "thoughtless" functions this isn't far fetched at all. Took me a minute to understand but I find this as a deeper understanding of mind-body dualism. An interesting belief system(if that's how you'd classify it).
