Well 1.6 to flush the contents of the bowl. Then another gallon to refill the bowl through the refill tube, so about 2.5 gal per flush in total. Modern toilets will use about a gallon to flush the bowl, and another half gallon to refill it, thus 1.6 gpf

This is an Eljer Auburn from the 1990s;the 1980's version would be more swirly,and the siphon jet diameter would be larger.

Interesting how this has a trapway opening akin to a Wellworth Lite, but the siphon is so weak it's almost non-existent. I would definitely try making the trapway no bigger than 2 1/2" to 2 5/8" and a bit circular. It can be tough, but the stronger siphon makes a world of difference.

You can only find used 3.5 gallon and up toilets in places like re-stores and architectural salvage yards. They were banned in 1994 when the water consevation act was passed.

We had two of these in the house I grew up in. They have a nice deep bowl, and were prone to clogging like in this video. 😁
