Salam alaykum, mashallah sister. Recently I got diagnosed with autism and ADHD. In my opinion I notice a little doubt about it for myself because with the diagnoses I had to answer these questions while now I think only Allah knows the answer to those questions. What is autism actually it seems that opinions differ.

This video was very helpful in allowing me to understand how I can take learning material outside of table work to make our learning more interactive and really engage my learner with things that they enjoy. I believe this will be especially helpful for learners that may have a difficult time working at the table or have a negative association with table work, but are comfortable in their environment. I also think it's a great way to help our learners apply their learning outside of the classroom by using more real world applications to actually grasp the material that we are teaching them. Thanks for the useful information!

When new therapist/placement students start at the centre, we always tell them to pair first. Pairing is a very essential part of therapy. We want to make sure we have paired well with the learner before starting the teaching process and to make the teaching successful. Most new staff/placement students think this is very simple but when we ask them after they have been at the centre for at least a week, they always say its much harder then what they thought it was going to be. Building the relationship with the learners is not as easy as it sounded. Once we know we have paired well with the learners and established reinforcers, we are ready for the next step which is teaching. Great refresher ! Thanks Chaza !

NET is an amazing way to teach new skills along with maintaining acquired skills. The beauty is that it can be done anywhere and with using any items you may have access to. Like mentioned in the video, early learners have less structure and tend to explore making is a perfect opportunity to follow the lead and teach in a natural way such as labelling colours, animals, and even counting. The NET lesson plan was extremely helpful and shows how all domains can be taught using one theme and activity. This video was extremely informative and will help in my progress to master NET. Like many RBTs, I also have noticed that sometimes it can be hard to maintain motivation for our learners and have the ability to sustain it over a longer period of time. This is especially the case for learners whose motivation for different reinforcers changes rapidly, which can make it difficult for us to adapt to readily. In regards to this video, I really enjoyed the introduction to instructional control pairing procedure. I believe having the opportunity to sit down with learners and access their reinforcers, as well as build instructional control, is a great way to transition from building that trusting relationship (from pairing) to integrating it into instructional control so that we can use it as a tool for learning as well. Doing this more frequently than we think is also a great idea as we know our learners may grow and change, just as we do, and we need to be mindful of that! Thanks for sharing!

Pairing is very important process when working with a new learner. Tone of voice, following the learners lead, and building motivation are all very important when pairing. It's easy to forget that the learner needs to trust you before you can place demand or be the one to take the lead. Another important point is pairing the environment you're in. The table can become aversive to some learners which is why pairing the table to be fun will keep the learner happy and build the trust between the therapist. This video was extremely helpful and will take many points into application! Thank you!

NET is a great way to incorporate the learners targets in a less structured way. It allows the learner to generalize their targets and apply them in the natural environment. I especially love how the therapist can use their creativity and explore many different ways of playing to teach the learner in the NET. Pairing can be such a fun process when working with a new learner. I've truly learned the importance of pairing and how much it will positively impact your therapy once you've gained the trust and built a bond with your learner. I think it is important to remember to not give up during this time and to continue trying not only different possible reinforcers but also different ways of playing with those reinforcers. One thing I enjoyed about the video was thinking about 10 different ways you can play with a ball. It can be so much fun taking a simple toy and finding new ways of playing with it that the learner might enjoy. Thanks for all the great tips!

NET teaching is an interactive play with your learner while embedding their previously acquired skills. NET is challenging, however it is an effective way of teaching because we are able to maintain and generalize the skills naturally in their environment. The videos in between were helpful as we were able to get an idea of how a NET teaching would like with a themed activity, the learner was engaged and it was ran so naturally and smoothly. The chart at the end that you shared was a great way to breakdown each domain and how we can incorporate the targets. I had recently did a NET teaching with one of my intermediate learner and the activity we chose was water with paw patrols and boats. I made the visual of the chart in my head of all the domains and ran the targets as we labelled the colours, labelled ongoing actions, intraverbal fun fill ins, manding and more. Thank you for sharing the video.

Pairing is a process that requires to build a trust relationship between the learner and the therapist which helps you to achieve instructional control. The video shared great tips about the steps on pairing and how we can be creative & fun when playing. Sometimes when I am paring with my learners I get stuck playing the same way with the toys. It’s a great reminder to make a list of how you can play with one toy or activities in different ways. The importance of motivation and body language. It’s important to be observant of our learners body language to see if they have began to satiate from the reinforcer and how we can regain their motivation. That’s where ICPP procedure comes in handy. When I was getting trained, I was always told to think ahead of what’s the next reinforcer you can bring out while still playing with the current toy. We always need to remember to have fun when pairing, to enjoy the process so it doesn’t look boring and not be afraid to try out various reinforcers.

NET is such an important part of teaching. There are many learners who learn easily in a very structured ITT approach but when the concepts are taken out of that structured way of teaching (or maintenance) they may not have generalized the concept. It is important to incorporate targets, both current and maintained in a naturalistic way to simulate the real world so they can use what they’ve learned in their everyday life. NET lesson plans are great to outline what you are teaching and how, this is very helpful when starting with NET and outline all your ideas and targets. A good NET teaching session should be fun, playful and interactive, the learner should be engaged and from an outsider it may not even look like teaching but will look like an interactive play session!

Pairing is so valuable in therapy. I think a lot of people focus so much on programs and learning specific concepts they forget about building that relationship with the therapist. I like to compare it as building the foundation of learning, if you aren’t paired or have that relationship with your learner before starting running programs then learning may not be successful. For both myself and staff that I have trained building that relationship and seeing that learner approach you (both yourself or with YOUR specific reinforcers) is so rewarding. Seeing that learner run to me or approach staff after pairing is a reinforcer for therapist themselves!! Finding new toys and reinforcers sometimes are the most difficult for a therapist. Bringing out different things or using their likes as a starting point is a great way to bring in new toys or actives during play. For example if your learner loves water play you can bring in cars to build a car wash or animals or dolls and give them a bath.

Pairing is such an important part of the process and one that often falls to the back of my mind during sessions. Seeing the benefits of pairing can be so rewarding when you see the trust your learn has in you, and this video was a great refresher for me to continue the process. Seeing the example in which the therapist was switching activities frequently was helpful for me because I sometimes can get discouraged when a learner is not engaging in an activity I have set out but it was great to reminded to let the learner take the lead and constantly reassess motivation (i.e., learner wanted to continue playing with the zombie). I found the tip on ICPP and presenting the second activity while the learner is engaged in the first activity to be a great takeaway as fleeting motivation can be an issue for some therapists and it can sometimes throw me off.

Often the focus of a session is on ITT and this video was a great reminder in how beneficial and fun NET can be. Seeing the different scenarios of how Net is run (i.e., at the table with the animal house or during circle time) was a great example of how versatile NET is and how it can be integrated into activities we are already doing such as reading a book with the learner. We can ask questions and have a back and forth with the learner, rather than just simply sitting beside them or reading the book to them. NET can be a great way to make the session fun for the learner as well the therapist, which can lead to higher engagement with the learner and higher motivation for learning/the activity. I found the chart at the end of the video extremely helpful because it showed how all of the domains can be covered during NET and it was great to be able to go through the process step by step of creating a teaching plan.

A naturalistic and less structured approach through NET is a fantastic way to teach targets and skills without the learner feeling as if they are doing any work! I liked how freebies were given constantly in the example videos and the tone of voice helped keep the session interactive. I agree that making the session as enjoyable and fun as possible makes it flow much better than when the therapist is overthinking targets. Thinking of themes and ways to expand is constantly a learning experience and there are so many new ways to play and ideas to incorporate, getting ideas from other therapists has been very helpful! The NET Lesson plan was a great way to brainstorm and have a visual plan before the session.

Expanding learners toys and activities by introducing things they have not played with and enjoy playing with is an amazing experience to be a part of with the learner! The importance of tone of voice and expressiveness was insightful, the example with the learner was an enjoyable interaction as his attention was sustained and he was engaged! The idea of putting on a show during therapy sessions is a great perspective, it reminds me of the quote by Mark Twain where he mentions dance like nobody's watching/sing like nobody's listening. Paying attention to body language and observing reactions has really helped during sessions when thinking of what enjoyable activities to try next and figuring out what they are motivated for the most. The types of conditioning methods that can be used during SSP's were fascinating and the difference between all of them was great to learn about.

NET is great for generalization and maintenance and is a less formal way of teaching (compared to table teaching). NET uses the environment and learner's motivation to implement teaching. Although it can be challenging to implement at first, NET is a great way to teach using creativity. NET allows you to embed all domains and a variety of targets. It is always nice to see a learner take what they have learned at the table into their natural environment.

Pairing is my favourite process and my favourite to work on with new staff. We sometimes overlook this process but pairing is so important. This is the first step when starting with a new client. We need to build trust and a good relationship first! When we have paired successfully we gain instructional control. Pairing helps us build a positive rapport with our learners, ensuring successful teaching. In the pairing process, the IT becomes a conditioned reinforcer as they pair with an established reinforcer. The goal is for the IT to become the ultimate reinforcer. Whenever we are training new staff this is one of the first things we teach. Pairing is a continuous process. These are all great tips! Some things I find that help with the pairing process are being fun and animated (if you are having fun, your learenr will be having fun too), giving freely, going with the flow (following learner's lead and motivation), watching your learner (body language, facial expressions, etc), being careful not to place demands (even asking "what colour is this?" can be a demand in play), consider individual differences, and don't be disappointed if the first thing you try doesn't work!

This video allowed me to understand the concept of intermittent schedules of reinforcement. In practice, I have used the various types of intermittent schedules of reinforcement that were mentioned, such as fixed ratio, fixed interval, and variable ratios. However, I did not fully understand the reasoning behind using these different types of schedules of reinforcement. For instance, that using variable ratios creates engagement with a learner as they are unable to predict what is coming next or when they will be reinforced next, thus sustaining their interest. I believe knowing these different types of intermittent schedules of reinforcement will allow me to reevaluate when I use them and how I can use them more effectively in order to maximize my learner's learning experience. Very informative, thank you!

This video was helpful in showing me how to create high probability cards. Having never done it before, it was helpful to understand why there is minimal writing on each card (for simplicity and variance of phrasing for therapist) and how HP cards can be useful prior to completing a more difficult task. This emphasized the importance, to me, of listening to our learners needs, especially when having them do a task that may be frustrating for them or cause problem behaviours. Moreover, seeing this in play with an example helped to cement the importance of this concept and understand how it works in a real-life situation. I find the video examples that implement the concepts extremely helpful in understanding how I can apply these concepts into my own practice. Great video!

Having instructional control and building a trust with our learners is a necessary component in successful teaching. It is important to remember to control reinforcers in the environment and ensure that they’re not freely accessible. Maintaining control of the reinforcers allows us as therapists to pair ourselves with the reinforcing activities which in turn teaches the learners that they have to go through their therapists in order to get what they want. This video highlighted a lot of important topics and was very helpful. I’ll be sure to integrate these tips into my therapy sessions!

Thank you Chaza for sharing this video on the importance of reinforcers. Reinforcement shapes how we all behave, and establishing a strong reinforcer is essential in successful teaching. This video helped me in understanding the effectiveness of reinforcers and how it can change depending on individual differences and the delivery of the reinforcer. It is important to remember the immediacy of giving a reinforcer contingent on the desired behaviour to avoid strengthening other behaviours.

Such an informative video! Often times we forget to have fun and seek new information about the learner. Whether they have engaged in a new reinforcer or continuously using the same ones and forget to introduce and explore new ones. Pairing and gaining their trust is very important in order to gain instructional control. Mistakes i personal make during sessions is asking too many questions. Loosing that instructional control can lead to one of many things such as walking away from me or not tending to my presence and get stuck in their own world. Something I need to implement in my teaching would be not asking too many question and also to keep it simple. Many times I would multitask. As you’ve mentioned in the video talking to the learner and not giving eye contact, either writing data down or grabbing something from behind. These are things we may think is not significant to teaching but acknowledging such can make a difference.

Thank you for this very informative video about reinforcement and how important it is. Learning such in school provided me with how it could like for many different learners. But nothing beats to actually being with the learner and acknowledging what their interest is and introducing other set of reinforcers that they may engage in. I agree with what you’ve mentioned in the video referring to learners having all different types of reinforcers. But also take into consideration that a toy that a learner may love to play with can eventually loose interest in. I think it’s important to utilize their reinforcer and think of creative ways to keep their motivation. Not to mention having a strong reinforcer can make all the differences with every learner when it comes to teaching.

Maintaining behaviours through schedules of reinforcement where extinction is present was interesting along with the differences in fixed ratio, fixed interval, variable ratio and variable interval that help fade the use of reinforcers. This is important to consider when thinking about the dependence of reinforcement within the learners I work with. Avoidance contingencies are displayed by learners and even displayed within us unconsciously where we are delaying aversive stimulus, it is fascinating to think about procrastination in depth.

This video was a great reminder that we need to get into the learner's world when we're with them. We need to get on their level and engage with them, not just during teaching but during play time, and make our session fun. This video had a lot of help tips such as not writing things down when talking to the learner and not asking questions when the learner is playing. Little changes such as these could make a huge difference in our sessions and our engagement with our leaner. A point that really stuck out to me was that the learner might regard me as an Sd, which was interesting to think about. I often don't think about what my presence means for the leaner. Furthermore, this video served as a great refresher for instructional control! Thank you Chaza for this video!

Thank you Chaza for this video! I found this to be a great reminder of how dimensional the topic of reinforcement is. I often just fall back into the idea that reinforcement is just giving the learner a toy or food they like after a desired behaviour but forget that i need to continuously assess the impact of magnitude and immediacy of reinforcement. One point that really stuck out to me was the value of the reinforcer during deprivation. It is something I never considered but I know it can impact my sessions immensely. For example, I might now reconsider using an edible as a reinforcer right after lunch or snack since the learner might be full. It was also a helpful reminder that reinforcement is a process that needs to be reassessed continuously and that reinforcers may change throughout the day depending on the environment and other factors.
