I have a best friend who actually consider a brother. He does as well because we both only had sisters growing up. His name is Tim Muphy and while he's American, loves and respects the culture he is a part of. He found the place his ancestors were buried in Ireland and I went with him to visit. His dad is literally Patrick Murphy and I tell Tim I can't wait to play this song while hoping I wait a bit longer to play it.

There is no other version of this song that comes close, this is exactly how it should be. Gaelic Storm killed it on this one!

Now, there are those who like to think we'd be best without the drink No beer, ale, or frothy pints of porter So, let's hypothesize how it would change our lives If everyone were only drinking water There'd be no public houses, no bars to take our spouses No party kegs or cans to celebrate No delirium or visions, regrettable decisions Excuses to be coming home too late So, brothers, sisters, it's time to take a stand! Well, you can pry my beer from my cold, dead hand! Raise 'em up, raise 'em up, and drink 'em down! Raise 'em up, raise 'em up, and drink 'em down! There'd be no swinging from the rafters, no bleary morning afters We wouldn't challenge strangers to a fight There'd be no singing 'round the fire with a drunken, boozy choir We'd all be home and tucked up for the night We'd have no way to wake the dead, we couldn't wet the baby's head Or toast the bachelor or bride-to-be We'd have no cheery pint to sup, watching Ireland lose the cup We'd barely need to go and have a pee So, brothers, sisters, it's time to take a stand! Well, you can pry my beer from my cold, dead hand! Raise 'em up, raise 'em up, and drink 'em down! (Drink 'em down!) Raise 'em up, raise 'em up, and drink 'em down! (Drink 'em down!) Every barmaid, every waiter, both sides of the Equator Would be out of work and living on the dole The wealth of every nation depends upon libations Beer, it seems, is worth its weight in gold Now, we've assessed the pros and cons,t alled up both the rights and wrongs The hellfire into which we could get hurled So, get that pint into your face! You can save the human race! We're drinking for the future of the world! So, brothers, sisters, it's time to take a stand! Well, you can pry my beer from my cold, dead hand! Raise 'em up, raise 'em up, and drink 'em down! (Drink 'em down!) Raise 'em up, raise 'em up, and drink 'em down! (Drink 'em down!) Yeah, raise 'em up, raise 'em up, and drink 'em down! Well, you can pry my beer from my cold, dead hand!

And, says my aul wan to your aul wan "Will you come to the Waxies' Dargle?" Says your aul wan to my aul wan "Sure, I haven't got a farthing! I've just been down to Monto town to see Uncle McArdle But he wouldn't give me a half a crown for to go to the Waxies' Dargle!" What'll you have? I'll have a pint! I'll have a pint with you sir! And, if one of us doesn't order soon, we'll be shanked out of the boozer! And, says my aul wan to you aul wan "Will you go to the Galway Races?" Says your aul wan to my aul wan "Sure, I'll hawk my old man's braces! I went up to Capel Street to see the moneylenders But they wouldn't give me a couple of bob for my old man's red suspenders!" What'll you have? I'll have a pint! I'll have a pint with you sir! And, if one of us doesn't order soon, we'll be shanked out of the boozer! And, says my aul wan to your aul wan "We got no beef or mutton But if we go down to Monto town Sure, we might get a drink for nothin'! And here's a piece of good advice I got from an old fishmonger 'When food is scarce and you see the hearse, well, you know you've died of hunger!'" And what will you have? I'll have a pint! I'll have a pint with you sir! And, if one of us doesn't order soon, we'll be shanked out of the boozer! And what will you have? I'll have a pint! I'll have a pint with you sir! Oh, the night that Paddy Murphy died is a night I'll never forget Some of the boys got loaded drunk, and they ain't been sober yet! As long as a bottle was passed around, everyone was feeling gay O'Leary brought the bagpipes, some music for to play! That's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy That's how they showed their honor and their pride They said it was a sin and shame, and winked at one another And every drink in the house was full the night Pat Murphy died! Well, Mrs. Murphy sat in the corner, pouring out her grief When Kelly and his gang came tearing down the street They went into an empty room and a bottle of whiskey stole And kept that bottle with the corpse to keep the whiskey cold! That's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy That's how they showed their honor and their pride They said it was a sin and shame, and winked at one another And every drink in the house was full the night Pat Murphy died! About two o'clock in the morning, after emptying out the jug Doyle lifted up the icebox lid to see poor Paddy's mug They changed the clock so Mrs. Murphy couldn't tell the time At a quarter after two, well we argued it was nine! That's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy That's how they showed their honor and their pride They said it was a sin and shame, and winked at one another And every drink in the house was full the night Pat Murphy died! We stopped the hearse on George Street, outside Sundance Saloon We all went in at half past eight, and staggered out at noon We went up to the graveyard, so holy and sublime And realized when we got there, we'd left the corpse behind! That's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy That's how they showed their honor and their pride They said it was a sin and shame, and winked at one another And every drink in the house was full the night Pat Murphy died! Oh, the night Pat Murphy died is a night I'll never forget Some of the boys got loaded drunk, and they ain't been sober yet! As long as a bottle was passed around, everyone was feeling gay O'Leary came with the bagpipes, some music for to play! That's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy That's how they showed their honor and their pride They said it was a sin and shame, and winked at one another And every drink in the house was full the night Pat Murphy died! Oh, whiskey, you're my darling, drunk or sober! And whiskey, you're the Devil, you're leading me astray Over hills and mountains, and to Americay! You're sweeter, stronger, decenter, you're spunkier than tay! Oh, whiskey, you're my darling, drunk or sober! And now, brave boys, we're on the march We're off to Portugal and Spain Drums are beating, banners are flying The Devil at home will come tonight Love, fare thee well With my tiddery-idle-doodle-dumma-da My tiddery-idle-doodle-dumma-da My rightful too-ra-laddy oh, there's whiskey in the jar And whiskey, you're the Devil, you're leading me astray Over hills and mountains, and to Americay! You're sweeter, stronger, decenter, you're spunkier than tay! Oh, whiskey, you're my darling, drunk or sober! And now, the French are fighting boldly Men are dying hot and coldly Give every man a flask of powder A firelock on his shoulder Love, fare thee well With my tiddery-idle-doodle-dumma-da My tiddery-idle-doodle-dumma-da My rightful too-ra-laddy oh, there's whiskey in the jar And whiskey, you're the Devil, you're leading me astray Over hills and mountains, and to Americay! You're sweeter, stronger, decenter, you're spunkier than tay! Oh, whiskey, you're my darling, drunk or sober! And says the mother "Do not wrong me! Don't take my daughter from me! For if you do, I will torment you And after death, my ghost will haunt you!" Love, fare thee well With my tiddery-idle-doodle-dumma-da My tiddery-idle-doodle-dumma-da My rightful too-ra-laddy oh, there's whiskey in the jar And whiskey, you're the Devil, you're leading me astray Over hills and mountains, and to Americay!
