Actually, perhaps the soldiers were composed of big screws for bodies and steel balls for heads - thus screw-ball army. More logical. I wonder in what languages besides English "screwball" has the same connotation of "crazy", more or less. I knew what it meant when I was seven.

I saw something on US TV when I was a little kid, about 1958, when I was seven years old. A stop-motion animation in black and white of a sort of military parade made of soldiers composed of hardware - bolts and nuts - marching all in formation as in a Nazi parade, seen in profile. The voice over (in English) mentioned "Hitler's screwball army". These few seconds I remember vividly. Now that I've seen a bit more, I wonder if it could have been something by Svankmajer - but that's just a guess. Does this ring a bell with anyone out there? Can anybody help me? What an impression it made. At the time I had hardly any idea of who Hitler was, but instinctively I understood the blockheaded idiocy of fascism in all its incarnations. Many thanks, Allen Schill
