There was a musical made of this movie in 2014 (and it's just as much of a cult classic as the movie) and it tried to tie up a lot of the plot-holes that were in the original. Primarily that Veronica's motivation to work with the Heathers was because she herself was being bullied and got swept up in their craziness to escape it. The Heathers, in turn, keep her around for her ability to forge handwriting and treat her like a pet project.

This is why the Nazis were somewhat diplomatic in this movie. Everyone watching this movie in 1942 understood the following political situation: Vichy was the name of the French government that collaborated with the Nazi Germany after France was defeated in 1940. Germany only wanted to occupy the Northern and Western part of France where all the industry was located. Vichy was officially independent and responsible for the civil administration of Southern France and its colonies, like French Morrocco. However, in November 1942 any pretense of independence by the Vichy French government ended and the Germans took over everything.

King's novel is very personal. It's about his own struggles with alcoholism and overcoming it (Jack is redeemed at the end of the book). Kubrick's movie is about a guy who was honestly probably going to try to murder his family, ghosts or no ghosts.

All three of you have completely missed the point.. Life is more complicated than the simplistic ethos of current movies such as the Avenger series etc. Older films required audiences to have some intelligence rather than have everything explained to them which your conversations clearly show you need. Also, why make immature comments like ‘…it’s Burbank.’ Also, your five minute discourse about the flashback. Also, the term ‘kid’ made you feel creepy!!!??

I thought it was a classic film. it's not my favorite Oliver stone film. i think JFK is a better film but i did like it better than platoon.the message admittedly could be a bit on the nose at times but sometimes it could be quite subtle. i love the cartoon nature of it. almost reminded me of like space jam because of how over the top it was i love the use of different styles. the western feeling of it. i love how they parody the media with RDJ's character. i loved how over the top he and Tommy lee jones were. Loved the commentary and the acting. probably my favorite scene next to the sitcom parody which was genius btw was the interview. i mean Woody Harrelson was just so convincing at playing this charismatic monster . i mean he really didn't even seen human to me at that point.and but the things he was saying were poetic at the same time. One thing that i will say is although i did love their relationship, i was not rooting for Mickey or Mowery and was really just waiting for the police to cut them down at the end but i was quite disappointed with the ending.

This was a BIG movie of my childhood and I actually think it holds up decently well for me. The Shredder is taken seriously and menacing. The turtles are fun and the mixture of the suits with animatronic faces still really works. For me, this is still the best TMNT movie they have ever made. Hope Mutant Mayhem will change that 🤞

I remember as a kid in my grandparents' countryside home exploring around with my satchel, a rope on my shoulder, and a big stetson hat larger than my head, looking after lost pre columbian temples, and hidden treasures...That's my level of fondness for tthe Indiana Jones character! The first three movies are Awesome pieces of entertainment, but only "Raiders of the Lost Ark"is the crown jewel of modern action Adventure cinema ... Adventure! That's truly a word that inherently has some mysthicism, at least That's what I got From Fiction, From media, enjoying the Indy series, as well the 80s Tales of The Gold Monkey, Big Trouble in Little China , or yes, even The Mummy (1999)

Before I saw the movie, I'd only seen the trailer with Keanu leaning back with the slow motion bullets and Lawrence Fishburne's voiceover saying "no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself!" It wasn't really talked about in my circles when it first came out. Then one night on our way to dinner, my girlfriend and I pass the theater where it's playing. She looks at the poster and says we should see that tonight so we bought tickets and went after dinner. After that I decided it was time for a DVD player. It remains my favorite sci-fi franchise. Flaws and all!!

I really enjoyed this film caught it on Disney last week. Very late 90s and working for the government I do laugh at the tech scenes especially where you’re accountable for everything as so much as a paper clip. Good fun and I liked how it was a mob movie half way through. I would say if it happened today and will smith got the tape out and everyone was identified, you’d pull out of shot with people like Alex Jones on the internet yelling it’s fake news and Voight’s character would have gotten away with it.

Great chat - thoroughly enjoyed hearing you chat about this rather classic film, and your observations. I think you really hit it on the head by framing it as an SNL "sketch" type movie, and on that point, it is a fun film. Some extra observations : 1) You mention that the portrayal of the Mexican people was steretypical and shallow, and we would expect them to less cartoonish and more fleshed out. Those are easy to spot with modern eyes. What seems to be missed, however, is that the general plot devise is also based on some harmful sterotypes that people have about Mexico generally. As a panel you laid out the contrivence of thinking movie stars are real, the novelty of a car.. etc. Whilst it sets the scene, it also perpetuates the idea that Mexican people were easily impressed by modernity, and that they were (are?) a backwards nation. Yet, if you look at he history of Mexican cinema, you'll find that it is not completely out of step with Hollywood, and that during the silent film era, there was also a strong Mexcian cinema industry that flurished until the 50s. The idea that people would be unfamiliar with this modernity, and the fact that as viewers we accept it so readily, is problematic 2) An aspect that I find equally uncomfortable to watch is the "White Knight" element, that again we accept without much question. Neither the residents of "Santo Poco", nor "El Guapo" have much agency - the latter being "saved" by the Germans, and the former by three bumbling actors. I know it is a trope that was common at the time, but it again perpetuates the idea of the "noble savage" that needs the white man to tell them that the strength was inside them all along. Are these two observations fair given the context? Perhaps, or perhaps it is a modernist lense. The problem is that many of us grew up with these movies, and neither at the time, nor now, do we question that narrative. Given the proximity of the US to Mexico, perhaps that is not a problem. But as a Mexican who grew up in Australia, I can assure you that this movie was fundamental in establishing Mexican identies to those of us who grew in the 80s, and those steretypes endure long after and to this day. However, whilst the entire plot structure is problemetic, it doesn't take away from a very memorable sketch film, with a legendary cast and some excellent comic moments. </two cents>
