As a Kenyan where few rich people have massively big and nicely built homes (nicer than western ones, especially European and UK) while majority poor live in smaller houses, I first landed in Texas as a student and I figured out that a majority of live in massive homes. Then I now live in the UK, where everything is cramped up and everybody seems to live in tiny houses and tbh, I hardly ever see exteriorly beautifully designed houses in the UK (even in the neighbourhoods considered rich).

American Things That Brits Think Are Weird As Hell: The legal right to "bear arms", i.e. Firearms, with little if any controls. The lack of any universal healthcare. The Pledge of Allegiance in schools. The lack of mandated Paid Time Off. The lack of mandated Sick Pay. The lack of mandated Maternity and Paternity Pay. The minimum age of 21 for alcohol consumption when you can be on active Military Service at age 18. Being able to drive a car aged 16. Homeowners Associations. The lack of decent Public Transport. The almost universal reliance on cars. How few Americans have passports and the fact that those who do have them only ever visit Canada and Mexico. How LOUD Americans are. I could go on ................... 🙂

I found there many differences between the two. I found Japan and the people very beautiful but in Korea not the same at all. In Japan the people are so nice and friendly and food is great but in Korea, it's just the opposite. I found Korea to be very drab, almost like a black and white film, people not very friendly, and disgusting looking food. Will never go back.

Very late to the party but hey ho, in case you do see this 'Sir' in standard welsh is pronounced with a s at the start, but in the welsh that originated in Sir Fynwy (very rarely spoken now), that starting s is in fact a 'sh'

I assumed "biweekly" meant twice a week. Shakespeare famously used autumn as a metaphor for aging in the first quatrain of his 73rd sonnet. That's at least 200 years before America existed. I think you suffer from American distortion where you think everything American is normal. I'm Australian. And don't get me started on aluminium and petrol.

I first visited the USA in 1982. I couldn’t believe it was illegal for a 6’3” 20 stone bloke to buy half a shandy, or walk across the road without expressed permission, yet it was ok for a fifteen-year-old to drive a car and own a gun. I assumed someone was taking the piss, but it turned out to be true. Madness.

In my experience, US citizens from Seattle, the West coast in general, as well as those from the North East of the USA seem by far and away more sensible and in tune with British values than those residing in the middle of the country. Generalising, I know, but there is more than a grain of truth in those stereotypical perceptions imo.

Not sure I would agree about food being more expensive in the UK. You can get comparatively cheap food (tax already included in the price). Public transport is a rip-off, as you said, because of privatisation. There used to be lots of public, toilets around, but very few remain open today. Not sure I would bother to invest in a window screen, but you can get safety features on windows preventing them from opening fully. Understanding what British people mean is a question of integrating into how we use the language. It is also not considered “British” and indeed, is probably inappropriate to appear overly extrovert in the use of body language when in public, the exception being when in a lively pub after a few beers. The pub acts almost as a safety valve in that respect.

‘The Potteries’ is not a collection of towns that are around Stoke-on-Trent. The city of Stoke-on-Trent IS the six towns themselves that became a federation in 1910, eventually being granted city status in 1925. There are also many villages dotted in between the towns and on the outskirts that have almost become suburbs of the town as they expanded through time. The city of Stoke-ON-Trent took its name from one of the town’s, Stoke-UPON-Trent, as that was the administrative centre, although the commercial city centre is in nearby Hanley, the other towns being Tunstall, Burslem, Fenton and Longton. To make matters even more complicated, the Potteries borders the town of Newcastle-under-Lyme, which has its own villages swallowed up into suburbs and others within the borough. In fact, it is so close, there is even a pub which has one bar in Newcastle and the other in Stoke-on-Trent. Altogether they make one massive North Staffs conurbation, although ‘Castle folk would never consider themselves to be part of the Potteries. That doesn’t make them posh though, as both places were steeped in coal-mining.

Welsh is problematic for the vast majority of English people, because the roots of the language is so different. English spellings and the “rules” governing pronunciation vary massively, essentially because when the settlements first existed, about 98% of the population were illiterate, and have obviously changed over time. There are still differences today, eg. Alcester Road is pronounced differently at the Birmingham end as it would be in Alcester itself.

I do not appreciate the way you keep making fun of our UK traditions and heritage. NEVER compare the US cooking methods with UK methods. Remember we were burning and creating foods hundreds of years before USA excisted. Where do get the gaul to critise and make fun of our cooking methods. Using a CUP to measure stuff ????? Not at all surprised you don't understand a pudding bowl, you don't understand ANYTHING about the UK. British items banned in USA.??? Have a look at how many items from US are banned WORLDWIDE because they contain too many poisons.

Animosity between Catholics and Protestants? Are we in the 19th century? Isn't in the USA were the KKK burned Catholic churches? Where Kennedy being Catholic was quite a miracle and was not repeated till 2020? Where Irish, Polish and Italians were discriminated against just for being Catholic? What are you talking about?

Hugging is extremely intimate. There is a lot of physical contact. Kissing on the cheek implies really minimal contact. There's no possible point of comparison.

It really shocks me that the Americans invented jaywalking in the first place, that they even wrote it in to their laws. So, if I've got this right and its a concept I struggle to get my head around, Americans are not free to cross the road, except at crossings. Really!! I've been to other countries (not America) and I've never come across that before.

For over fifty years, Daddy made pancakes and extra crispy bacon. Both my grandmothers cooked by hand without recipes. I took over for Daddy when he couldn't figure out how to work the pan.... Alzheimer's took him down in 2020. Imagine my surprise when I read the pancake mix box.... Just add milk! He was from the backwoods of the Southern Appalachians... They did NOT go Carolina. They went out SERENADING! The coin in the Christmas pudding is like the Baby in the King Cake for Mardi Gras. Similar is done with a coin for Kings Cake on the eve of the Epiphany. Barnyard animals are said to be able to speak on Christmas Eve, but never when humans are around.

The eggs in the refrigerator in the US is because the eggs you buy are washed clean which also removes a protective layer from the shell necessitating refrigerated storage. In the UK the eggs are not washed and can be stored unrefrigerated. Both are tested as salmonella free before sale.

Scotland isnt British its Scottish.. going up north. What are you talking about. Going up through a country called England to another country called Scotland. To say up north like England is part of Scotland is the most insulting thing you can say. To Scottish people. Over 400 towns 790 islands and 10 times larger than England.
