I'm going to have to try this. I started making the panels for my Riley Brooklands in aluminium and over cooked the first one. Got one spot I over stretched I think. I am out of practice and I never had that much practice to start with! It's good enough to start making the other panels and gas welding it together but then I will need to tweak the shape before permanently attaching it to the timber frame.

That's one of my favourite wheeling machine tricks, how you can smooth out really lumpy hammer blow stretched panels and they come out perfectly smooth with very little effort.

Very interesting, thank you. I found your channel looking for aluminium welding tips. I have done if before, a few years ago on my Austin 7 but need a refresher for my new car, a Riley. To build the body for my Riley I modelled up the chassis I have in CAD then turned that into a 3D model and then designed the body on top of that until it looked right. I used superimposed photos of real cars all overlaid on top of each other to get the shape correct (no two 'originals' seem the same!). I then sectioned the model to get the profiles for the different frame stations. I was then able to print those out 1:1 and glue them to ash then then bandsaw them out. The frame is complete now and the car mechanically complete, am about to start on the aluminium panels hence the need to remember how the heck I did the gas welding on the last one!

10/10 for for getting in there and doing it. mig/tig suppliers should buy this video to promote the modern electronic machines. 100 years ago it was all done with Oxy acet, so it can be done and you become a true craftsman when you master this skill

You do a great job at what you do, but your video tells me that you really do not know what the dollies are meant for and should not be for educational videos. You get the job done, just not the correct way.

Thanks. I try my best. I did initially go on a course where I was told 'we do things the proper way here' but it was only looking at basic videos by amateurs that made me think I could achieve something.

Im not sure what lenses your using but the manufacturer of the didymium purple lenses i use told me that the cobalt or didymium lenses alone ate not sufficirnt eye protection for welding. Thry said yo back them up with the standard green lenses. I use either a #3 or #5. Edit: I see later that you said you're using a special aluminum welding lens. 👍

These very early cars were not only engineering marvels of their time but also works of art. The generous use of copper, brass and bronze adds to the beauty. I’m sure in some instances the use of those materials was required by manufacturing limitations but beautiful none the less.
