2:06 is this cut from a mastered version or something? I remember it looked worse. Also I wish that SS arc was animated like gintama 2006 or 2015. The fight with Utsuro would be just awesome with better animations and some more choreography but their butget by the end was...there was no. Btw great video :D

I was 15 years old when I watch Gintama. And now I'm 28. Watching Gintama give different meaning when you're an adult. At first, I didn't why Takasugi had done what he did. I though he was just the bad guy of the series. As I grown up, I understand now why Takasugi done that. He want retribution for himself. He want punishment fot himself. To allow Shouyo died. What hurt him the most is to allow Gintoki to be in a situation where he had to cut Shouyo, their beloved teachers head off. It showed how much pain Takasugi feels when he still remember clearly Gintoki's crying face even when war was over 10 years ago. That battle is battle for two broken men pour their pent up rage, sorrow, anguish, sadness to each other. I cried watching these man fight like they were real.

I started reading Gintama circa 2008 when I was a teenager, stopped around the time of the Four Devas Arc and finally finished the whole thing last year as a 30-year-old. This episode hit so hard and I'm lucky it wasn't spoiled for me in all that time. It really was like seeing a childhood friend's darkest moment after over a decade of knowing them.

something i've never seen people talk about is how Sorachi gets across character's emotions and thoughts. They are almost never said completely clearly outright, but are encoded in subtext as well as character expressions. It always amazes me how many emotions he can get across with only on panel of a character's face!
@shironnch
@shironnch 2 жыл бұрын
I know right. Sorachi sensei is amazing. Every character show their love by rough action and rough words but the feelings is so deep. Before I don't like rough and rude people. But watching Gintama make me observe people more. People action and feelings often don't match with their words. And from there I learn to be patience and less stiff. And incline to listen to two people side story and the solution rather than listen and lash out. Part of me is getting mature by watching Gintama and by extension Sorachi sensei.

Wait, THAT face is what got you? What got me was Takasugi crying out, almost guttural... "Why, why won't you avenge Sensei." This question comes from someone who could only feel hurt and hate from not only losing Sensei, but temporarily seeing the sadness of his brother. This tragedy is why Takasugi was angry and hateful. Not because of his loss, but because he cares about Gintoki. Possibly... *More than anyone else.*
@ChinmiPL
@ChinmiPL 3 жыл бұрын
Finally, THIS! It's not just about that they lost Shouyou; death is a part of the war (obvious) and I'm pretty sure they knew well they might not win their sensei back. For Takasugi it was mostly about what was done to Gintoki; that they made him choose between his father figure and brothers and that he was forced to be the one who kills their family member in front of the others. Gintoki's pain was something Takasugi couldn't stand, not Shouyou's death itself. And bc they were so close and they knew each other better than anyone, Takasugi is the one who understands Gintoki's pain the most. And since he saw the suffering Gintoki has been through, he felt he needs to punish himself bc he let this happen. Bc Gintoki's pain was in his mind his fault, bc he as well felt he failed in protecting everyone. Bc if anything, he should be the one who died that day. What he didn't seem to grasp was that killing him and Zura would bring Gintoki just as much pain. There was never a better choice. So the only suitable punishment for Takasugi will be to go through the same suffering. He needs to kill Gintoki. Only this will bring him the same pain; killing someone he holds dear. Killing himself would never be enough. In the end, what he always wanted to destroy was himself, not the world. It's terrifying how much these boys took on their shoulders to carry. And they were just kids. . . Also, in other words, they loved and cared for each other deeply. They mean the world to each other. (PS. I apologize for any mistakes english is not my native language.)

After watching the shogun assassination arc, it’s now understandable why Katsura was able to change unlike takasugi, takasugi wanted Gintoki to promise him to protect Shoyo but Gintoki broke that promise, along with the different backgrounds, Katsura once had a family and could get the love he wanted from his grandmother, he had a place to belong and so for him Shoyo and Shouka Sonjuku was just a new home, but to takasugi, Shoyo was everything, he was one of the first people who cared about takasugi and he felt like he could belong somewhere now, but the world took that away from him, and now he was left with nothing

With katsura I think the death of shoyo translated into a legitimate desire to improve the world coupled with anger, and that’s why he stayed as a rebel. He eventually realized that he didn’t need to use violence to accomplish his goal and that using violence wouldn’t make the world a better place since he would be hurting innocents. With takasugi i don’t think he ever had that desire for legitimate improvement so all he had was the anger he felt so he had no problem with using violence or any other means to accomplish his goal which was basically just the fulfillment of his anger by ‘destroying the world’

One of the biggest reason that this episode really hit me really hard and made me burst into tears is how Gintoki has grown in me for the past 300 episodes and made me really empathize with him. The time I spent watching Gintoki for the past 300 episodes made me feel what kind of person Gintoki really is. I absolutely cried watching this whole arc. It was all so well written, and this fight was just the perfection of them all. It was telling everything that had to be told, the fight was simple in raw, but the meaning in every single detail, the reasoning for the whole fight and their own dilemmas, is what made it perfect. They came from different backgrounds, got attached to the same place and people, grew together with them, had to fight for it, had to sacrifice it themselves. Then after that, they had to move on. Great video btw. I think I'm going to write a poem based on this. I've seen this whole arc just a couple hours ago, and I loved it.

All I remember when I recall this epic fight was the essay that was posted in Tumblr. It says that this fight signifies more than all their hatred and regrets. It also shows how much Gintoki and Takasugi meant to each other. That even if they're fighting to their death, in a way they are helping each other to get through their own demons. I hope I can find the essay. it was really profound
