I was not into BL or anime at all when I was introduced to TGCF. My sister told me about the book and how good it was along with the donghua. I was curious because it was the first time I had heard of a chinese animated series and at it felt a bit weird listening to the original audio, so I switched to the dubbed version and finished the first season. I really wasn’t sure what to think about the donghua. I didn’t fully understand the story or where it was going, and it felt like there were so many unanswered questions, especially about Xie Lian’s past and why everyone seemed to hate him. Out of curiosity, I decided to read the book just to see where the story was headed, and I completely fell in love with it. HuaLian were the first characters I ever shipped, and I’m still obsessed with them to this day

I first stumbled across this series as a fan translated Google document in a random forum years ago - and it has held me in a chokehold ever since. TGCF is a core experience in my life now. And I am a rabid devourer of all things romance, fantasy, anime, etc. so I have consumed mass amounts of media. I don’t think anything could ever top how I feel about Hualian and co. And every time I see a new convert to Xie Lian’s Puqi Shrine, I can’t help but to feel emotional, and so excited for someone else to get to experience this masterpiece. You’re right, the translated prose and writing style is a little funky - but it wouldn’t be the same without it I think. And the story more than makes up for it. Oooof and you haven’t even made it to THAT part yet 😭😭😭 Anyway!! Welcome to the fandom! And fair warning: you WILL be pressured endlessly into reading MDZS too 😂 it’s also amazing (but tgcf will always be my fave ofc)

@ i think it's really helpful to use an online dictionary like pleco that'll show you the exact meaning of each word and you can translate from raws yourself although you do have to take a few liberties in translating like shuffling cause the grammatical structure is different- it also provides a really good audio for each character (word i mean). its a bit slow but i think its one of the closest things you can get to knowing chinese without knowing chinese (thats an oxymoron im sorry). also some small pronunciation things even though you didnt ask cause im an infodumper 🫠- c like in tian guan ci fu is like a hissing s, ci is like the hissing s + a cross between and eh and uh sound in one syllable; xuan (im still sobbing over beefleaf ill never recover) is like shoo ahn but as one syllable; hua in donghua and hua cheng is the same sound ish; jun wu is like june woo; and feng xin is like fuhng seen. good luck with not dying by the end of the series!

Little do you know, but you’ve activated my trap card! 😈 For what I lack in conventional reading experience, I have toiled and trialed through the medium of pictorial storytelling. From the sacred glyphs etched upon the walls of pharaonic tombs to the delicate strokes of Edo’s woodblock masters, from the ink-stained pages of the American graphic epic to the luminous screens of their digital heirs-I have devoted my very soul to the sacred art of comics. For there are no seas more perilous, no depths more uncharted, no waters more expansive than the realm where image and word combine, forging a language unto themselves… I role-play facetiously, but seriously, I love all things comics. I'm excited that you're starting to explore new mediums (both manhua and anime). Since you gave me direction on my journey into traditional literature, I'd like to slide you some unsolicited recommendations. These are going to be all over the board, with different backgrounds and therefore different narrative conventions. Some of it’s gay, some of it’s fantasy, and some of it is just content I’m trying to push onto you. Please prepare yourself for my oncoming info dump-it’s not too late to run. #mansplaining *Print (Comics, GNs, and Manga):* I know you already read graphic novels because you've reviewed _Fence_ and recommended _Heartstopper._ There are a lot of indie graphic novels I might recommend, like _Shortcomings_ by Adrian Tomine or _Gender Queer_ by Maia Kobabe. I think good Western graphic novels tend to focus on identity in storytelling more than world-building or lore. _I Think Our Son Is Gay_ by Okura is a fun slice-of-life manga about a mother trying to support her closeted son without letting him know she knows. But if there's one printed comic I’d recommend, it’s _Understanding Comics_ by Scott McCloud. If you read any graphic stories-no matter the genre, culture, or medium-you should read _Understanding Comics._ It’s essentially a guide to creating, engaging with, and consuming pictorial storytelling. *Anime:* I was surprised when you said you've never gotten into anime because everything about you screams "2013 Tumblr weeb." (Said w/ love.) Like, there’s no way you weren’t a sports anime girlie or a Ciel x Sebastian shipper. And I oop- Like comics, anime is a medium with a wide scope of quality and genres. I’m going to stick to recommending shows I think are good based on the quality of their story rather than popularity or fandom. I know you like period/fantasy and romance, and while they aren’t gay, I would highly recommend _'Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf'_ and _'Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.'_ Both stories have weight to their world and lore without being overwhelming for a new anime fan. _Spice and Wolf_ is about a traveling merchant who agrees to help an ancient wolf goddess return to her homeland. _Frieren_ is about an elf dealing with the complexities of outliving everyone she’s known. Despite growing up devouring shows like _Junjou Romantica_ and _Sekaiichi Hatsukoi,_ I’m hesitant to recommend any yaoi because of how blatantly problematic most of it is. Think _Captive Prince_ levels of blatant assault and pedophilia, but replace the compelling characterizations with reductive, one-dimensional stereotypes of gay men-that's basically every yaoi from 2000-2016. I think _Yuri on Ice_ really shook up the genre, and now most modern yaoi, like _Sasaki and Miyano_ or _Cherry Magic_, are cute slice-of-life stories. *Manhua/Manhwa:* Moving on to the gay shit *_I CAN_* stand behind. Before anyone can recommend _Killing Stalking,_ 😷 let me offer you three relatively healthy slow-burn romances. You can tell the quality of a good shounen ai by whether it has a TV adaptation. _Cherry Blossoms After Winter_ and _Semantic Error_ are both BLs that have been adapted into Korean dramas. _Semantic Error_ is a bit edgier, as the main couple has big beef at the start, but _CBAW_ is my personal comfort read. I also just finished a story called _The Guild Member Next Door,_ and I really think you might like this one-cute characters, awkward situations, and comedic moments. While these three aren’t the same genre as _Heaven’s Official Blessing_ (they’re contemporary), they’re all character-focused in the same way. Damn, this is a long comment. If I got this many recommendations at once, I’d probably ignore them all… Well, at least I helped with your video engagement. 🤭 If I had to slim my list of recommendations down to three, they would be: _Understanding Comics_ by Scott McCloud, _Spice and Wolf_ (2024), and _The Guild Member Next Door._ Individual stories fascinate me. Stories as a construct fascinate me. And the differences between types of stories fascinate me-like how manga and manhua both differ from Western graphic novels, and yet they also differ from each other. I hope to see you continue to expand into non-Western stories even if they’re not visual. 💛

Ah yes, book 2 victim club! I read it right after it came out and I can't put it down ever since - I'm in Old World theory hell, licking every page for lore crumbs. Special interest choo chooo ^______^)/ I agree about the tone change between DR and DH, and how Pacat's Book 2 Syndrome mercilessly hits like a brick. Can you believe that Pacat thought that the book 3 was shaping to be 'quite demented' and yet found a way to crank it up EVEN MORE? mercy ANYWAY. Same. Same. Ah, if you/anyone in the comments are into manga, there's one inspiration brought up by Pacat - Please Save My Earth. It has that past - adults with secrets, future - reincarnated kids figuring it out - plot and it makes one lose their mind 'how is this shōjo' when the themes are so adult (I know the publishing and demographic is different in Japan, but hoooolllyyyY).

I like that theory that the collar was never actually a control thing it was more to protect Anharion and to give him access to Sarcean’s power (which we see when James puts it on and he’s suddenly able to use way more magic when he was previously wiped out) while also giving him sort of an ‘out’ to act in his true feelings and get out of his vows. Also I don’t get good feels about the sun king. I wonder if we will get some other information in the third book that like actually a bunch of stuff was blamed on Sarcean and he’s not all of what people thought and the sun king is bad. But that’s maybe wishful thinking haha.

I'm dyslexic, so low-key my reading tastes are mad underdeveloped. I don't read fantasy, or like, read at all... _BUT,_ I grew up on queer YA media like the webcomic Tripping Over You, Carry On, and a _shit ton_ of Percy Jackson/Nico D'Angelo fan fiction. I've been trying to expand my tastes, but as a 25 y/o, I don't even know what I like. I feel like gay YA doesn't feel as satisfying as an adult, and I'm low-key terrified of sex (🤪🙌♠️) - MM books tend to feel aggressively smutty to me. I actively avoid books that look like the front of a Hollister bag. (Me literally judging books by their cover.) I just want a well-written gay adult romance that isn't sports anime for horny housewives and doesn't have omegaverse werewolf impregnation. But like... with whimsy... Point is, I found you a week ago by searching for Dark Rise reviews. I was hoping to go from adult-themed YA to a plot-focused Adult, and as somebody who doesn’t know shit about books, I've taken your word as gospel. Against my better judgment, I picked up the Captive Prince series, and first of all - How dare you. I am obsessed with Laurent and Damen. You've made me parasocially attached to fictional made-up people, and for that, I can never forgive you. _This is why reading is evil..._ but also, like, what do I do now??? 😩 I'm new to books. I don't know where to go from here. I don't know what other authors to trust or series to read next. What is a trope? Who is 'Meet' and why are they 'Cute??' Donde está la biblioteca??? I took an entire James Baldwin class in 2023 and ohhhh boy was it tense and heavy. The Fire Next Time is hands down my favorite bc it deals with his waning respect for the church he grew up in.
