I really think that the tone of this video is bad. If you are going to talk about a new product or process in FGU then don't smack talk and put down the mechanics. At least get someone who is neutral to the changes if not enthusiastic. "This would work better on paper..." Ok, let me throw out FGU and all the content I have bought as well as the 2024 books I just paid for on that platform, great!

You likely did not watch the entire video and chose to home in on one statement and opinion. I am a community member with my own opinions. I am not Smiteworks or WotC. I apologize for the reactions to the newer mechanics, but it can be cumbersome, adding more things to track, especially for a newer GM. I am generally honest about providing realistic information to GMs about features and options from an end user's perspective. Just because an optional rule is challenging or tougher to manage does not discredit all of the 2024 rule set or books. Just be prepared to learn a new option and be aware of the extra effort to provide immersion for your group if you use bastions.

Did you look at your video before you uploaded it? The video cuts out at 28:39, right after you say "I don't think it's very intelligent", and is a blank screen for the final 8 minutes.

The thing I think is missing from FGU is a ruleset manual module for each ruleset. Something task orientated, so you can quickly find how to handle a given task. New players have to rummage through forum posts to find how to handle these things. A beginner box like this would certainly benefit from something like this. There's lots of info around on creating characters but how to effectively use the platform to run a game is lacking.

Agreed. Informaion is very scattered. How to handle things is a good thing and must come from multiple sources and be compiled. No one person can possibly know and experience all the potential nuances of such information. And when Fantasy Grounds updates, sometimes that type of data is sorely outdated.

The other thing is that not many devs, or users are familiar enough with Fantasy Grounds and any given ruleset to create any such documentation. It's usually one or the other and not both, which is critical to being familiar enough to actually know how a rule set meshes with the platform. And even so, it's likely only one or two at best. And, moreover, the documents have to be updated often to remain relevant.

I agree, but unfortunately, most rule set devs don't get to play enough to discover the more play aspects of the game play. And it is also evident in some conversions or adaptations, that the individuals performing the conversions are not always intimately familiar with the content, and sometimes miss out on the cues and nuances of encounters and other such things. To achieve the level of understanding to document how to handle things in game, would require that you play the game or content at least once or twice in Fantasy Grounds to grasp how features and automation impact game play or hinder play styles, etc. Also, some features work better with different adventures or campaign settings. A rule set that features both land and aquatic environments may not translate to the same use cases or needs insofar as using Fantasy Grounds and any given rule set. It's really too varied without strict standards and adventure design that can fit the platform or vice-versa.

Me too. There are a lot of great extensions that Smiteworks would do well to adopt. No sleight to them... they work very hard... I just love FG and want to see it stay competitive!

It depends on what rule set you want. Also, if you plan to host games on Fantasy Grounds, the Ultimate License or an Ultimate subscription is a better option so that your players don't have to buy anything.

What software are you using for the mouse pointer while filming this? That is SUPER useful when it displays "left click", "right click" etc..

The software is a mouse pointer app, but it is an overlay. Discord or OBS will not capture the mouse on one layer, so I have to share my "entire screen" and not just Fantasy Grounds. www.pointerfocus.com/

Seems to work reasonably well for copying stats from a PDF as well (be mindful of copyright of course), just need to delete a bunch of extra line breaks and for some reason AC wasn't parsing correctly from me even though it looked to be formatted correctly (was using legacy stat blocks). Way faster than typing in manually.

Agreed, it depends on the source. Often, older PDFs had odd and non standard formatting or images instead of text.

Natural Adaptation requires that you choose a size for your character. Truescale is only for Medium size. Since a choice has to be made in regards to size, it makes sense that it isn't automated.

I look forward to playing pathfinder of FG. Im a fan of the remastered edition just because as a new player I find its organization much easier. I agree with you on the maps being better to because pcs don’t get hung up on edges like some WOTC maps.

The Remaster shenanigans were annoying. Especially as I had all the cards, etc. I suggested many places they should release an update pack of those... but nope. I now have most, if not all of the PF2e stuff for FGU. There definitely is a lot of updates I think need to be done, like the character creation needs to be better.

@FantasyGroundsAcademy Yeah, I went through it all last night. The Tracker works, but is clumsy. I can create a character in about five minutes in Pathbuilder2e (desktop or Mobile) and import it into FGU much faster. I am not sure if it is the way the tracker's menus are. Or I have too many books loaded, so the lists are huge, or what. But pfbuilder has the skills, for example, and tells you which ones you can train for, and figures out which ones you have from your earlier choices. FGU doesn't have something so smooth.

I just manually built them, copy and paste into the actions tab and then made into and effect on the character sheet, and then stored in "Spells". Most of them are just notes, but useful for game play. There is another video that sort of explains in more detail..I also noticed that someone else is selling them for five bucks as a Fantasy Grounds module.

About the Revised Pf2 ruleset: it's downward compatible to the legacy pf2 ruleset, so you can run all the legacy adventures with the revised rulebooks. Also you have all the content of the two new rulebooks (and the old ones, and the rules for pf1) for free on a website called: Archives of Nethys. Don't worry, this is not illegal, but Paizo actually promotes this website. So you really don't need to buy the (very expensive, I'll give you that)) rulebooks at all, even if you want to run new Adventure Paths created under the revised rules. I always have Archives of Nethys open on my browser when I run or play pf2 because it has a pretty neat search function if you want to look up rules quickly during gameplay. The Beginner's Box is indeed your best bet if you're completely new to the game. It leads you through the basic game mechanics pretty well without you having to get into the weeds of the pf2 ruleset too much. But if you have an fgu licence you actually don't have to buy anything, you could theoretically run the game just with Archives of Nethys.

​@@FantasyGroundsAcademy Huh, might be interesting. I am running a group with FoundryVTT right now, and have been thi king of doing a comparison video between FGU and Foundry. There are things I like about both, but there are things that are lacking on both. Character creation is missing stuff (for pf2e) for both platforms. I wonder how possible it would be to just throw money at the Pathbuilder dev to get it slurped into both platforms! It makes creating characters MUCH easier. FGU is Almost there for it, but Skills aren't automated at all. Then again, the Spells aren't automated in FoundryVTT!

Well this update failed spectacularly. The game is so laggy now it is unplayable. I played it Monday, right before the update, and it worked fine. Tried tonight and it takes a full 60 seconds for a click to be recognized

I think it's a good suggestion, but the art subscription is more universal for the entire platform, and not just the new 2024 5e Dungeon Master's Guide. I think it opens up more potential though for sure.

I would encourage them to do this as it allows more versatility with FGU and running the new 5e games.

Unfortunately, whenever there is an update to FG, you have to reset everything again on launch. Really wish they would address that.

If you have your shortcuts on a list or such, at least you can salvage that. I did not think the module state was reverted back to lose positioning or the campaign state, unfortunate. I have never experienced this unless I revert my campaign manually.

Nothing free for members, not even a free map... 500 euros for maps... I think that lately the application only looks at its own pockets... a shame... not even a free adventure... it is no longer worth recommending its purchase.

How is this stuff not BUILT in to FGU? Like we all have to manually set this stuff up per character per spell? Super frustrating, this seems like what the VTT should be doing automatically. I see a slew of extensions to use for spell effects too, but I am trying to avoid unsupported extensions.

Why do people want 3D camera stuff before basic 2D overhead features? I might need to start a campaign to bump up the priority 🙂 Thanks again ... I have a bunch of FGU bookmarks and this will be a good one.

What happened to Rob's bundles on DMs Guild? Do you still recommend using them even though they are not available anymore?

If you previously purchased on the DM's Guild, you can still download via your library, otherwise you can get them on the FG Forge. The effects are being slowly rolled into the ruleset, but not all of them, so they still have good value for awhile, especially for FG 5e Legacy.

Pro-tip that either Teddy of Carl taught Zacc recently for masked FX layers: Duplicate the layer. It will have the same mask properties. That way you don't have to draw the mask again and you can just change the FX settings as normal.

This is one example..The feature has changed since and you can just make a straight line. This used to be the way to blend in the opening. The map tools have evolved since this video released a few years ago.

The Scribe background gives you the Skilled origin feat. That's why you had 3 more skill proficiencies to choose at the end of character creation.

Gotcha. It's odd that it waited until saving the character to ask for the skills though. I had issues like this with other builds too.
