Without a gas mask, you will pass out from the exhaust. Its basically laughing gas, which is an anesthetic. I dont think its any more carcinogenic than regular fuel, however... and maybe less so.

Eh, a bit of a stretch. I've stood behind modern top fuelers, dozens of times, without passing out. I've watched hundreds of runs, and never witnessed a crew member, passing out at the starting line...and notice the crowd of onlookers above, standing directly behind the running motor?? P.S. This vehicle is running on nitro methane...laughing gas is nitrous oxide.

It was on nitro the whole time. Alcohol was was keeping it lit and running until it got warm. It got nasty when the overly rich Alcohol was turned off.

These things are WAY crazier than modern Fuel cars, all things considered. The sound, the landmine of drivetrain parts in your face/between your legs, tires 8" from your face, the fact that you had to wear a damn gas mask, haha! Something is badly wrong with people willing to drive these monsters, but thank the hot-rod gods for them.

I've been doing a lot of hot rod reunions, and the Astro is my favorite cacklefest dragster. Tall Nitro Flames coming out of the Zoomies, I just wish they'd run it down the quarter-mile
