What a shame Woolworth's doesn't exist any longer. Younger generations will never know that feeling of a store w/a little bit of everything + a counter to get a fountain soda & a burger.......I miss the 1960s & my Mom.......😢

My heart simultaneously sings and hurts viewing this.... Voice like an Angel and soul of a Saint. A talent taken too soon, but so thankful that her talent was able to be shared.

A wonderful song, and a wonderful singer. But it hurts that Nanci is no longer with us. I suppose we should be grateful for what we got.

I first heard Nancy at Folk City in NYC 1985...she was one of the last concerts before Folk City closed. I was amazed and dumbfounded, how could such a gifted artist not be known...I was blessed to know her ..RIP

I’m still listening! I first heard this song as I was falling in love with my wife of 36 years! It became special to me. It was 1986. Nanci became special to me too and I miss her so! A gifted songwriter, storyteller, and a marvelous person!

@@RobertsonMilkshakes Spit the details out' you can listen to her sing anytime as many times as you want to over and over again or did she leave you because you were holding out on her and not realizing coming up short needs an explanation for your lack of ability to please her with your short patience and had rather listen to Nancy sing instead.

This song will forever bring to memories my Friends Jack and Linda. I met them when I was manager of Independent and Veterans Taxi Companies. I was programing Jack's meter and I noticed He was doing His darndest to see what I was doing. I later simply showed Him how to do it and He became a representative for the company and He even Managed the Taxi Companies after me. Jack said I introduced this beautiful gem to Him and Linda but I thought they had turned me on to Her! We were at their place in Cusseta, Ga. listening to this crazy song titled "The Bounty Hunter" and Jack and Linda had me in tears I was laughing so hard. When computers got popular Jack learned to repair them and He repaired some for me and then one He could not fix and I would not pay Him and it haunts me to this day!! We were all a Family of taxi drivers who came together during Christmas time and helped each other pay our company "Licks!" Jack and Linda relocated to Kentucky and Jack got sick but still lived a few years. I was upset that Linda had not let me know Jack had Passed then I found out She was not long in Passing Herself after Jack. I remember they use to call me "Mean Sergeant Means" during my Defense Information School Days and on a couple of Assignments. Had they seem me after realizing Jack and Linda was gone they would not have believe the crying I did. Life can be funny! Born in Bessemer, Alabama and lived during the Civil Rights Days, we didn't trust too many White People. I guess that blanket was laid on me during my Army Days when I became best friends with Steve and Kathy Wilkes going to bowling tournaments with Top Parker and HIs Wife. It's sad so much hatred is in the world. My Book Willie Means Well (But It Don't Work Out Sometimes)- The Meal, Featuring My Letter To The President and Other Editorials tells of so many things I went through in life and will frighten many at the same time making them laugh! It's in Print and Audio and the Print was not edited too well and have misspealled words but You can get by listening to the Audio Version. I tell the "Truth" and Unusual Happening will cause some to loose sleep. GOD Is Good, GOD BLESS!!!!!! (Love Has No Color!!)

Rita was sixteen years, hazel eyes and chestnut hair She made the Woolworth counter shine And Eddie was a sweet romancer, and a darn good dancer And they'd waltz the aisles of the five and dime And they'd sing Dance a little closer to me, dance a little closer now Dance a little closer tonight Dance a little closer to me, 'cause it's closing time And love's on sale tonight at this five and dime Eddie played the steel guitar And his mama cried 'cause he played in the bars And kept young Rita out late at night So they married up in Abilene, lost a child in Tennessee Still that love survived 'Cause they'd sing Dance a little closer to me, dance a little closer now Dance a little closer tonight Dance a little closer to me, 'cause it's closing time And love's on sale tonight at this five and dime One of the boys in Eddie's band took a shine to Rita's hands So Eddie ran off with the bass man's wife Oh, but he was back by June, singin' a different tune And sportin' miss Rita back by his side And he sang Dance a little closer to me, dance a little closer now Dance a little closer tonight Dance a little closer to me, 'cause it's closing time And love's on sale tonight at this five and dime Eddie traveled with the barroom bands 'Til arthritis took his hands Now he sells insurance on the side Rita's got a house to keep Dimestore novels and a love so sweet They dance to the radio late at night And they sing Dance a little closer to me, dance a little closer now Dance a little closer tonight Dance a little closer to me, 'cause it's closing time And love's on sale tonight at this five and dime 'Cause Rita was sixteen years, with hazel eyes and chestnut hair She really made the Woolworth counter shine Eddie was a sweet romancer, and a darn good dancer And they'd waltz the aisles of the five and dime And they'd waltz the aisles of the five and dime And they'd waltz the aisles of the five and dime Source: LyricFind
