Maestro, in Italy in Rieti there is a twin of this organ, did you know?? We need help to save this jewel, the reasons are various, but I think that the Dom Bedos which is here in Italy is a piece of French culture, this was B. Formentelli's intention when he built it without compromises, according to the dictates of Dom Bedos, to build a bridge between Italy and France, a cultural axis.

When one blows into a single organ pipe one would not think that it is possible to build an instrument so powerful like an organ with such a thing. Who was the genius to find that out?

My 2nd favourite organ piece, (the first being, Bach's Toccata and Fugue.) I also love this played by massed pipe bands.at the Edinburgh Tattoo.

Thanks! So often this piece is rushed and played way too fast! But I think that's a misunderstanding. It's good as slowly as here.

Jens, what stops did you assign to these manuals? Very subtle, very evocative voicing choices. I'm accustomed to this piece being played with very incisive voices (often flutes), which is nowhere near as effective as your election of what sound like an appropriately emphatic use of string voices, but I can't tell much beyond that.
@JensKorndoerfer8 ай бұрын
I wish I could tell you, but I don't remember exactly...it's a combination of stops from the ten divisions throughout the piece, which creates a truly magical mix :)
@joelfenner8 ай бұрын
@@JensKorndoerfer I appreciate you taking the time to reply anyway. Whatever the subtleties were, it was a brilliant set of choices on your part! This is now my "gold standard" performance.

What's interesting about the Symphony Concertante is that in the first three movements, the organ is essentially augmenting the orchestra with some solo bits here and there. But in the Toccata, it's the other way around: the organ is king and the orchestra spectators. Virgil Fox knew this when he made his "arrangement" of the Toccata for solo organ. It's essentially just the solo part with a few missing orchestra parts added to finish fleshing it out. Very little needed to be added; the solo part can almost stand on its own legs.
@JensKorndoerfer8 ай бұрын
That's true - but on the other hand, the brass & percussion do add a nice touch to the Toccata :)
@mendax17738 ай бұрын
@@JensKorndoerfer Yes, but the brass accompaniment makes it sound so damned French! Yes, I know that Jongen was Belgian but what he did sounds a little like something Ravel would have done if he had dreamed up a monster of a toccata. I think it's just that my mind has been poisoned by the fact that I first heard Virgil Fox's arrangement played by him over 40 years ago (on an audiophile direct-to-disc LP that cost me $16 in allowance money in 1981!!!) rather than Fox's 1961 recording in Paris with the Orchestre du Théâtre National de l'Opéra. If it had been the other way around I might have a different opinion.
