Yeah, some things got "hidden" - especially snapping tool. They should be on the top, when you are using text tool - not as classic, four buttons (L,C,R,J), but as single one with dropdown. Also you might want to turn off View>Widescreen if you are used to old interface,

I'm no longer mixing sound with music background. Mostly because I always used open license tracks, and yet I had always to fight copyright trolls.

Did it successfully convert to path (Object>Convert to path)? Maybe it's a group? In this case Inkscape won't be able to convert it. The easiest way to check what kind of object is that, is to click on it and look at the status bar. It should say something like "X Y in layer Z" (e.g. "Path 9 nodes in #g1234 layer"), where X is object type (text in a shape, path etc.), Y is basic info (nodes, color etc.) and Z is layer name. If "X" is not a path, you should convert it first. If Z starts with a hash symbol (#; usually "#g[numbers]") it means it's a group (even single object can be a group) - in this case you can use menu Object and then either "Ungroup" (ctrl+shift+g) or "Pop selected objects out of group". If it's too complicated or it still fails, please tell me the status bar message that appears after clicking on the object. I'd need just the bold text, i.e. type and layer/group name.
