These are not *Indian dog breeds* - these are dogs *popular in India* . Following are Indian dog breeds: 1. *Bully Kutta* - Ancient, Tulla, Aseel and Mastiff varieties. 2. *Gull Terrier* 3. *Indian Spitz* 4. *The Great Indian Dog - InDog* - Now available only in the most rural (tribal) areas of Chattisgarh. 5. *Alangu Dog* - Deemed extinct but few nos. continue to thrive in and around Tanjore district - few N.R.I breeders on the job to revive it. 6. *Rajapalayam Dog* - Most popular Military dog often called Polygar Hound - was used to bring down horses in war along with foot soldiers. 7. *Chippiparai* - One among the fastest Hunting dogs of Tamil Nadu and a Royal Indian breed. 8. *Kanni* - Also termed *'Maiden's Beast Master'* , similar to Chippiparai - fast hunting hound but which comes mainly in black colour. 9. *Mudhol Hound* - Royal Indian breed which has now been officially inducted into the Indian Military service - One among the fastest dogs on the planet rivalling the Greyhound. 10. *Malayeri* - Often found among residents of the Niligiris - A special mountain dog. 11. *Kattakal* - Native Indian breed which could be called the *Dachshund of India* - used for hunting mice, snakes etc. Great hound. 12. *Kombai* - Most ferocious war and guard dog used by ancient Tamil Kingdoms. Excellent shepherd. 20. *Bakharwal Dog* - An agressive variety similar in looks to the Gaddi Kutta but more sturdier legs that mimic those of a mountain goat. 21. *Bhangara Mastiff* - A very large variety of mountain dogs. 22. *Vanjari Hound* - A sleek but tall hound that is very low in pop. these days. 23. *Ramanathapuram (Ramnad) Mandai* - A unique dog which doubles up as a *Scent + Sight Hound* ! Used in wars. 24. *Caravan Hound/ Maratha Hound* - One among the fastest dogs in India. The Mudhol hound is a relative and falls within this family. 25. *Soriala/ Sarail /Bengal - Bangladeshi Hound* - Developed from Greyhound with the InDog - The Bengal Hound served as a trustworthy companion for Mukti Bahini soldiers during the 1971 Indo-Pak War that gave birth to Bangaldesh. One among the fastes and intelligent hounds that is known to pick up the scent, relentlessly search for and find their original owners even after being miles apart. The story of Commando with a soldier of the Mukti Bahini - *would be a legend and treat for anyone who wishes to gauge the inteeligence of Indian dog breeds* . and last but not the least ...... 26. *Kumaon Mastiff* - This elusive mastiff once used by Indian Army to guard and protect our borders is now in feared nearer to extinction with barely 150 - 200 members. *This mastiff has an ancient bloodline and one among the only mastiffs like Sarabi Dog to live long but stay powerful*. Even I am amazed that we have *25 - 26 Different varieties of Indian Dog Breeds* ! Unfortunate that our Indians focus so much on foreign breeds that they lose sense of these amazing ancient breeds within India whom not only are helthy and live long but exceptionally intelligent.
