The ending of this sonata is most unsatisfactory, the way it's written by BB. A long run, starting piano, one bow for most of it, and feeble final chords. I suppose maybe because BB was not a violinist. NB this ending: bowing changed to a single note, which makes the scale much more articulable, and the chords are not feeble, despite faulty intonation. This is an example when an intelligent performer is justified in going against the composer's wishes to improve the music. Which she did. As a result, this is the only version of this sonata I saved for my collection. Not any of the big names.

These three know how to interpret Shostakovich, one of the 20th centuries greatest composers and one of the greatest composers who ever lived on this planet.

Unexpectedly surprising! It's really hard to imagine Martha playing Shostakovich.

Just a few words to describe her skills and taste in playing and interpreting this piece simply can not do it justice. She's better at this than I can describe.

Mastery of this Sonata is very rare. There are people who can play the notes. Many fewer understand conceptually what is between the notes. Those who have succeeded in making this very great work of art their own, taken it into their blood, are a mere handful. This woman has done so, in a remarkably idiomatic way. Bravissima!

Sometimes I'm more impressed of the amazing memory that you need to have to remember every single note of a non-stop piece that lasts more than half an hour. Imagine how many times she must have practiced this to get to this point of performance.

If you practice something as difficult as that your bound to end up knowing it inside and out by the time your done with it I think!

Others have remarked upon the nuances of this performance and this includes Ms Schwarzberg's clear underlining of fragments from quartets which Bartok self quoted. But this (requiring slower pacing than some use) does not at all take away from the raw sonorities the composer Szigeti he wanted to build into work -- even using the violin like a percussion instrument. The slight rubato on the slow movement is entrancing and holds the sonata together. Even the odd bits of audience noise do not spoil the work nor this poised and perfect performance by an artist mainly known in the west for her pedagogical achievements. When a great Master of an instrument loves every dot and jot of a composition this much the result is greatness.
