As it has often been said before, there is typically no good time answer to the question. The truth is it depends on 5 factors, 1. What type of steel in the shear, 2. What angle on the shear edge to perform the required type of cutting, 3. How much hair goes through the shear, 4. What type of hair is being cut, 5. What is in the hair. Best answer: When the shear no longer performs the expected task.... Then it's time to sharpen! It could be 2 months to 2 years! Regarding #2: Probably 75% of the sharpeners don't pay attention to what angle is needed for the type of styling or the original factory angle for a stylist or barber. Are you in the 25% who know what angle is needed for the stylist to perform their styling task? Why do some shears come from the factory with 30-35 degree angle and others come with a 45 or 50 or 60 degree factory edge angle?🤔

Years ago, when i used to charge $20 for sharpening, i would tell them to them to put a nickel in “the jar” for every head. When the jar is up to $20 it’s time to call me. About 400 heads. Surprisingly how well it worked and close it was. Also alleviated the “i just got these sharpened…they didnt last long” comments.

This was very helpful because explained how to take those UFO style scissors apart. I would like to know more detail information of sharpening those style of scissors. With my years of experience of being a professional knife sharpener, I am very familiar with taking the burrs off your Edge in order to make them Sharp. So far I don't understand how you can sharpen your shears on only one side. If you do not take those scissors apart, the ones with the UFO nut, how can you sharpen the back side of the shears? As you sharpen the bevell you are going to make a burr which we are always called those feathers. The feathers will always be on the opposite side of the blade that you have sharpened. Those must be taken off or if they snap off they will be immediately blunt and dull. I would love to find more of your videos on sharpening the style of scissors and if I am wrong on anything I have said, I would know where I am wrong.

I’ve sharpened all my shears and some coworkers shears after watching a lot of your videos and some from Wolffe industries. Todd's answer was right on. If the sharpening was easy as these were and the customer did not indicate they used these for slide cutting, and I know what the angle is ... I don't take the extra time to cut hair. If I feel the tip might pull or I'm iffy with my results or as Todd said, if I'm sharpening thinning or texturizing shears I will cut hair. If I'm doing cheap groomer shears I will often test them on artificial thick fur. But for these straight forward Hanzo shears... there is no need to cut hair. I know they are sharp and aligned correctly. The tissue tells me if I left nicks or burs.

Funny story. I purchased a cheap lefty to practice on. I use TAS, so I changed my wheels around. Did everything that I usually do to sharpen. Now I am right-handed, so it all feels really weird . I get them done and put back together and test with single ply. Well, they will not cut correctly. Tips are OK, but the rest is awful. So I took them apart and started over. Got them done and put back together and still not cutting correctly. Suddenly I wondered, is it because I'm using them in my right hand ? So I googled it and sure enough, it said they will not cut properly in the wrong hand. So I tried them in my left hand and they cut perfectly. 😂😂

Hi Bonnie, how do you see when a sharpener puts the pressure wrong when looking at the shear like in this video?

Different pressure or alignment issue will cause rideline width variance from pivot to tip.

I have a long story if you have the time. So I'm getting close to retirement age and I like knives. So I started a sharpening business part time hoping to get enough customers so I could afford to stop working my regular job, retire and still sharpen to afford life. Then I started seeing your videos and learning about shears. I couldn't afford a flat hone machine so I bought a TAS. I practiced , got them sharp enough to cut single ply wet or dry. No pulling, no folding. So I started taking business cards to salons. A coworker brought me 3 pair from his mom. I did them for free for feedback. She was really pleased. So today I was visiting salons handing out cards. Came across a stylist that wanted sharpening. She had a pair of Olivia Garden shears. She said she sent them to the company, and they came back worse. So I tried them on tissue , tips not cutting. Nothing appeared wrong in my inexperienced opinion. So I disassembled them inspected and cleaned. Edge was really slight, so I figured convex. I sharpened them, put them together and still not cutting every time at the tips. Used the pink stone a little, still no good. So now I'm starting to worry, my first paying customer and I can't complete the job. So I disassembled again and sharpened again. Still not cutting at the tips. So I tucked my tail and went back in to tell her that I could not get them to cut all the way to the tips. And told her that I could not accept payment. We'll She wouldn't take no for an answer so she gave me the payment and that made me feel even more defeated. So I came straight home ordered her a new pair and came to your videos. The reason I bought her a new pair, was because in trying to fix them I made a few mistakes, so I thought it was only right. So I'm not so confident right now and wondering if maybe I should stick to knife sharpening. But like they say if the horse throws you off, get back on. I know what mistakes I made, but still cannot figure out why the tips would not cut. I'm gonna ask if I can have them when the new ones are here. So I guess even at sixty couple you learn from your mistakes and keep moving forward. Love your videos and I've learned a lot from watching. Thanks.

@@josephspratt2055 in the factories they typically free-hand…..not all of them. Their workers have muscle memory and are consistent. I am less concerned with the original angle than I am on the use of the scissors and quality of the scissors. Sometimes the manufactures angle is too thin and dulls quickly. Sometimes they add a small blunt bevel over the convex to make the edge last longer. You have to decide based on the shear and the client what customer edge they need. This is why I like a clamp so I can record what angle I used and modify it next time if needed based on consultation with the client. Hope that helps…..but my go to angle when I’m not sure is 45.
