Just some teachers CAN'T TEACH! Other people who probably aren't professors are better!

This has been really helpful, this is to just summarise for my future learning: Four principles: Partnership Acceptance Compassion Evocation Skills needed 1 open questions 2 affirmations 3 reflective listening (do not use questions) 4 summarising Four processes 1 engaging - avoid assessing trap, avoid telling them their problem, avoid power difference, labeling 2 focussing 3 evoking -evoking clients own motivation to change 4 planning - most important evoking change talk: some examples : what would be your first step?, why do you want to change?, how might you go about making a change?

I've completed 4 courses of MI and I can tell you that this presentation is direct, clear and easy to understand, only if you already have an idea of what MI is. But if you're newly being exposed to MI, this might be a bit confusing for you. Despite all of that though, the truth is none of it matter if the patient or the other person isn't cooperating with you.
@billmatulich5 ай бұрын
Hi Paul, Thanks for the nice words about the video. There are strategies for working with less cooperative clients in MI and in fact MI is useful to use when people are resistant to change. But, you are right that you need the client or other person to at least be willing to meet and talk with you to use MI. If they agree to at least meet, MI can be used to reveal their underlying motivations, whatever they might be. In MI we also respect the client's autonomy, so, if they decide not to change, the MI practitioner would not only accept that but support the fact that they are deciding for themselves, supporting their autonomy.

I’m going to share this with my NP to potentially help our relationship. Things like procrastination being mistaken for resistance, telling, power, authority, having mutual goals (?), feeling hopeful, change talk and reinforcement are all weak spots. He asserts being an expert in sleep issues as a reason for “telling”, which does cause resistance in me, rather than hearing my concerns. I back off entirely. Ironically this video was introduced to me to help medical students with motivational interviewing.
@billmatulich5 ай бұрын
Yep! The paternalistic approach often generates clients "backing off" despite the information maybe being accurate. More about MI can be learned at my website: www.motivationalinterviewingonline which you could suggest to your NP.

Drugs are not a decision. Medical schools in America teach - addiction is a symptom of PTSD. Dr. Lonny Shavelson found that 70% of female heroin addicts had been sexually abused in childhood.

This, when implemented makes an absolute difference in the way any coach or mentor help clients. This is going to be the foundation of my own practice - both as a future nurse and business mentor/coach. Thank you!

Excellent and thank-you. Garlic girl has a good point. This was a very sound overview and will make digging into a few texts much easier. Also helps being a better therapist! Can hear things in MI recognizable from Rogers, Gestalt, CBT / DBT, Narrative and Solution Focus etc.. Thanks for a very nice and succinct presentation. !
