Hi Tom, this might be an obvious question, but wanted to ask you for certainty. Is the average dialogue loudness measured from your dialogue stem, or from the overall mix? Thank you.

I measure it when I predub, so it is measured at my printmaster bus but it is ONLY dialogue since I am mixing that first.

Hey Tom, just looking to purchase some stuff from your website, could you clarify the following please - Does the Family Heirloom Megabundle include the latest version of your 5.1 template, does the AAF include the unedited DX/ADR and MX tracks (I realised there are separate sessions for the edited versions - but Id like the unedited as well to practice and compare/contrast between the edited) Cheers m8, thanks so much for all the info your putting up here, so helpful :)

Hey Tom great video thanks! I wouldnt mind seeing how you would combine reels (or multiple PT sessions) into one PT supersession (i think theyre called) Also at what stage in the process is this done? Is all the sound editing (fx, foley, bg, dia editing etc) done in seperate PT sessions for each reel and then when its gets to the rerecording mixer all the reels are combined into one pro tools session or is the rerecording mixer mixing in individual reels or pt sessions, bouncing each of those reels and then joining the 5.1 or 2.0 deliverables. Hope that makes some kind of sense. Anyways just a possible video idea Thanks again

Hey Tom, if you route all your dialogue to a separate dialogue bus that has a compressor on it, do you use different compressor settings for talking and shouting scenes? Meaning, if you set your compressor setting to normal speaking levels, when the characters start shouting it would hit the compressor harder. So do you use a separate compressor, or separate bus for louder dialogue? Possible topic ideas: Would love to see a tutorial on setting up a 5.1 room from scratch. What equipment is needed, routing, etc. and being able to switch back and forth between monitoring in 5.1 and stereo if needed.

Usually the bus compressor is only kicking in for loud stuff like yelling

I had a project that I worked on with a friend they had made a suggestion to me to not cut the dialogue and add in the fades and instead they wanted me to use the volume and automate the fades in because he was worried about losing the track. Obviously you can consolidate. When I originally wanted to do was draw in my fade handles in between each of the clips or at certain parts after making a cut because I thought that would be easier than having to automate all the time other than that I think it would be a preference thing wouldn’t it like? Does it really matter whether I draw the fades in with the automation versus drawing them in with handles?

The John Wick 4 opening scene with the punches, when I saw it at the AMC Grove 14 in L.A., was WAAAAAY too loud. Maybe it was just their sound system but if I hadn’t brought ear plugs (which I ended up wearing through the entire film) I am positive it would have damaged my hearing. This has become a real problem in the way movies are exhibited now and unless we impose loudness and max decibel level standards on the movie theaters themselves it will stay this way. Lately I have to wear earplugs to every movie I see and it sucks because it doesn’t have to be this way. It makes me not want to watch movies in theaters anymore.

Thank you, Thomas. I’m from China, and here, most mixers tend to cut the dialogue's high frequencies down to 10K at the beginning in pursuit of a so-called "film feel." I really dislike this approach. I believe that dialogue is the most important part of film mixing and is a topic that should always be explored. Thank you for sharing.

I’m completely new to audio post production. But I did some audio engineering in community ollege but dropped out due to the fact I live in Detroit Michigan… yea there’s not a lot of work. Or I don’t think at least. My questions for you is, where do I start with learning everything and where do I find work? I’m really interested in film and audio so please help and let’s chat!

It's tough getting started. You need to find some smaller projects to work on to get experience. That's the first step.

I couldn’t agree more about Cedar. I got caught on the hype of AI noise reduction, but I recently worked on a documentary with lots of people skateboarding and music in the background. AI plugins did more arm than good in most cases. It’s also really easy to simply suck life out of DX.

Hey Thomas! Thanks for sharing all the materials! I have recently seen people mixing dialogues with a subtle distortion on the master dialogue aux (in your session it's the routing folder). It turns out to deliver a "movie vibe" on the Dx, but also sometimes I feel it's a bit too distorted. Have you seen people doing that on dialogues? And whats your thought about that?

I lived in Tucson as well for many years and remember those thunder storms. You must have been there because of Davis-Monthan I'm guessing. For the next live stream, maybe it could be about timecode; why it is needed, how it is used, how it effects dialogue and sound editors, etc.
