At 12:20 why did you load both rubber to the same shark fin ?
@DepthWishАй бұрын
I load the rubbers by the sequence of lowest goes to the shark fin that is nearer the front tip of the shaft, middle rubber goes to next shark fin closest to me and if there is a third it is the most on top and goes closest to me. If there were four or five rubbers they would go the same way. There can be some spearguns that do not have enough shark fins to handle all of the rubbers are they are built with intention to load on the same fin. Some can handle this and some cannot. If the shark fin does not have enough height to it, it is likely to slip off while moving through the water. If it is tall it may be able to handle more than 1 rubber on it. If I am trying to get maximum power out of a speargun and the shark fins are tall, I may load 2 or 3 rubbers on the same shark fin that is closest to me aka the shark fin that creates the greatest rubber band stretch. Generally speaking however, spearguns are intended to have 1 rubber per fin. I didn't rewatch the video but sometimes if the rubbers are tight, I will temporarily rest the 2nd rubber on a shark fin that is easier to get to and then I will move the butt of the gun to my sternum and pull it to its correct position making it tighter. Hopefully these scenarios help make sense.

You should make a video show how the short guy load a long spear gun.😀
@DepthWishАй бұрын
I can do that in the future when I start making videos again. There is definitely a technique that most everyone can use because blue water spearguns can be quite long and having shorter, super tight bands is pretty sweet for generating power.

Hi I have 2 x 16mm bañds on my 110cm speargun an it difficult to load can I use 14mm bands? It has a160 cm , 7mm shaft .
@DepthWish2 жыл бұрын
160 cm shaft on a 110 cm track sounds really long. If it were me, I would work on loading technique and keep all of that power in the bands. It makes all of the difference for range and for getting through a big fish. Do you have access to someone that can weld on extra "shark fins" on top of the shaft? You could have 1 or 2 put at easier spots and then put on your sternum to jack them to the next spot. I think the short answer is you could use thinner bands but I would want to use whatever the speargun was designed for. If it hurts your hip or your chest, put an old flip flop under your wetsuit.

You are loading the gun against your belly ?😳
@DepthWish2 жыл бұрын
I am right handed so I will load on my right hip or my lower abs. If it the speargun has very tight rubbers, I will load it to one of the easier shark fins on top and then I put it on my sternum to move it up to the higher position shark fins on the top of the spear shaft.

135 is total stock length or only barrel length?
@DepthWish3 жыл бұрын
135 cm is the barrel or track length. The butt/handle and shaft hanging off the front is additional length. It is fairly narrow and has just 3 bands so it moves well laterally in the water. I've used it to land everything from drummer to tuna/GTs.

It's not but Nusa Penida can be very good. You have to have a good boatman that understands the tides there as the currents can be sketchy also.

@@DepthWish how much of a threat are sharks for spearfishers generally?
@DepthWish3 жыл бұрын
@@_Steve_S - it really depends on where you hunt. In Aus, S. Florida and S. Africa for example the vibrations from a shot fish will bring in bull or white sharks immediately. In the spot where I went for these tuna I didn't see any. However, a few islands over I was just out and seconds after I'd catch a fish there would be a black tip or white tip reef shark. These aren't too fear inducing but can be 1-2 meters long. I'll post a video of that session soon. Do a search on grouper fights spearfisherman and marlin attacks spearfisherman to see some gnarly stuff. So far so good for me though - except the time I caught a hammerhead on a fishing line and the time a grey shark came from the deep while I was battling a rainbow runner. Haha... I guess they are a bit of a threat!
@_Steve_S3 жыл бұрын
@@DepthWish thanks for your answer! Did you make these experiences in the coast region or more far out?
@DepthWish3 жыл бұрын
@@_Steve_S no problem. There are 4 videos in this short tuna series and these I guess you could say are more far out. It is not going to happen without a decent boat. However, I really like the independence of shore diving and probably do it more than most spearos. If you are curious about the relationship between sharks and distance from shore, that variable might not really matter. A place like this could easily have a ton of sharks but it's likely they were overfished previously. Some shore spots can have a good number of them. The behavior/regulation of fishing in the area has a major impact on that kind of thing but diving with a buddy in areas that have reef sharks can be managed well. It's a lot of content but I'll put out a video where I caught about 7-8 fish and reefs sharks kept checking them out. I was not at fear for my safety and kept them away from my body so at worst I'd lose my catch and maybe some gear but nothing happened and I wasn't scared.

In Florida it's the Cobia. They don't know they're hooked until you put them in the boat. Only then do they start freaking out. It might be a different experience spearfishing for them but with classic rod n reel fishing they are about as dumb as they get, although I've heard that Almaco Jacks can give them a run for their money.
@DepthWish3 жыл бұрын
I am really curious about cobia. I've seen videos where spearos are taking them off of sharks. Are they tasty?
@1TakoyakiStore3 жыл бұрын
@@DepthWish I've never had the chance to eat any but I'm told that their nickname "lemon fish" stems from their unique flavor. They usually are found on or near sharks and rays (apparently reminiscing about their remora heritage) but sometimes solitary. I've heard also that they were a target for aquaculture but idk if that's gone anywhere in 10 years.
@DepthWish3 жыл бұрын
@@1TakoyakiStore - I've seen "sidekick" fish that tag along on big GTs, mantas and sharks and I think that at least some of them are cobia. There was a large old unicorn fish that I speared about a year ago off of an old mooring line and he had a sidekick. I nearly got them both but the cobia figured it out after about 30 seconds and scooted away. Next time.
