I imagine that Fassbender actually had to try to make his German sound *less* convincing, considering how well he speaks it in real life

When you think about it the absurdity of having a strange accent because you live at the bottom of a mountain is such a silly excuse. They could have thought of a better backstory than that.

Might be late for my 2 cents here but he should have just said he is from the US and followed the great Arian call to return to the fatherland, has experience as an US army officer prior to the war and deserted to give his military knowledge to the Axis forces. Sprinkle lies with truth. Should have not worn a SS uniform though.

What I really like - and what 95% of the people to this day dont understand - is that when the SS guy refers to "Obersturmbannführer München / Lieutenant Munich" and "Obersturmführer Frankfurt / Lieutenant Frankfurt" at 2:00 he really refers to them by their german accents. He couldnt have known by then where they are from, however when walking into the bar from the backroom he says "I too have an acute ear for accents". That underlines it because Munich -> Played by Gedeon Burkhard, born in Munich. Til Schweiger (Frankfurt) grew up in Gießen, just to the North of Frankfurt. So even such small details got considered in the movie. Awesome.
