Hello Rachel -- I have watched several of your videos, and have gathered lots of tips for converting a giant man's shirt I have into cute dress -- thanks! But the shirt i have has a giant stiff collar I need to cut off completely. Any suggestions among your many video for a new neckline? Maybe a V, or a circle. I could bias hem the cut-out, but something to watch would be great. If not, no biggie. I'm enjoying watching your videos and collecting the various instructions I need to get the dress I have in my mind. thanks again for your tutorials!
@RefashioningWithRachel2 күн бұрын
Yes, I would recommend cutting out the collar and then wrapping the raw edges with bias tape. I plan to do a sundress with this neckline in one of my next videos. Thank you so much for watching so many of my videos!

Fantastic! Even if you hit the half-price sale week at a popular craft/sewing store, the fabric for that dress would cost plenty. What a great idea to find fabric for so much less that's already half made. I'd like to see patch pockets on this dress. I need pockets for phone, etc. even around the house.
@RefashioningWithRachel5 күн бұрын
I love the idea of adding pockets! And I'm so glad you like the video. I usually get my thrifted shirts during the day of the week sale when they cost $1.99. A lot of the shirts are nice cotton or linen. And much cheaper than a yard or two of fabric. Plus, it is nice to make something new out of something that would otherwise be thrown away.

Your instructions are clear and easy to follow. I hope the imagination you show here inspires thousands of people to think out of the box about how to repurpose clothing!

It's fantastic Rachel. I'm thinking as a sewing enthusiast myself, how you might reduce the large collar/neck opening? This would take your design up a notch. Great work! A small booklet on how to do this refashion might sell well for you. I look forward to your upcoming videos.

Thank you so much for the advice and the words of encouragement! I like the idea of a booklet.

I like to just open the collar wider for a more relaxed look and re_iron it. I also seam rip the buttons and put them back down an inch or so closer to the shoulder seams. That's my easy solution at least
@RefashioningWithRachel5 күн бұрын
I like that idea.
@curtisloew45546 күн бұрын
I kind of messed up my first one because the men's shirt had a regular shoulder, and my shirt had a drop shoulder and I didn't realize at first that it mattered.
@RefashioningWithRachel5 күн бұрын
Ah! Yes, but hopefully, the shirt was just thrifted, so you didn't really waste anything special. And it was fun practice. And you could still do something from the scraps of that shirt. I have a pile of failed projects that I'm planning to cut up and turn into a quilt one of these days. I'm also planning to make a video of ideas for scraps of fabric.

Thanks for the tutorial. What kind of fabrics are good for undies?
@RefashioningWithRachel11 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching! Pretty much anything with enough stretch is good for undies. So most knits. This project only requires a little fabric, so it's a fun one for scraps or for experimenting with different fabrics. In the end, just choose whatever fabric you like to feel on your skin.

Very useful video! Maybe I missed it, but did you specify the type of stich you used? Regular zig zag? Stretch stitch? Thank you!
@RefashioningWithRachel15 күн бұрын
I used a zigzag stitch so it could stretch with the fabric. I'm glad you liked the video!

If you sewed through the cuffs, how did you unbutton to turn them back on the reveal?
@RefashioningWithRachel25 күн бұрын
Nice question. I sewed through the cuffs along the underarm seem line which is a few inches away from the button placket. If you look at any button-down shirt and pinch in a little bit of the cuff right where the seem line is, you will see it does not affect the buttons. But you will end up with a seem in the cuff. Which is fine if you sew carefully and make sure the ends line up. Also, finish off the raw edges and stich them down on the inside of the cuff.

just go get some material and make a dress that actually fits. Less work than taking everything apart, and then sewing everything back together.
@RefashioningWithRachelАй бұрын
Yes, that would be another way to do it. But this way is more sustainable. It makes use of an item that would otherwise be thrown away. I like to look at "trash" and imagine how to turn it to treasure.

Would it be possible to place a zipper between the top and the bottom of the dress so it becomes a convertible dress/crop top? It would make it casual though I suppose
