Nice video. Agree with your comments about the BBC Sherlock and competency of the Sherlock character in that show (no take-away from Cumberbatch's masterful acting)
@BrandonsWritingRoom22 күн бұрын
Thanks! That show really jumped the shark with how season 2 ended and season 3 began. Granted, Arthur Conan Doyle also killed off Sherlock before bringing him back later (because money), so I suppose the show was kind of following the source material that way lol. But yes, Cumberbatch was excellent in the role regardless of the show's overall quality.
@FrostNinja923 күн бұрын
I've never watched Sherlock with Bendyboat Cucumberslap, but I've heard good things. Also, I think it would be interesting to have a character with zero competency who somehow gets lucky and gets assistance from other characters to progress through the story, perhaps building some small competency along the way. You know, the lovable loser who somehow comes out on top. Another thought: you said "living character", but I can imagine a short story being written from the perspective of an inanimate object (say, a clock on a wall that "watches" the events of the short story unfold in the room, with the reader using events in the room to extrapolate the in-between pieces of the story). Does this seem wild?
@BrandonsWritingRoom22 күн бұрын
"The Lovable Loser Who Somehow Comes out on Top" is what I hope to one day call my memoir haha. To your second point, that's absolutely doable. A clock on the wall is definitely inanimate, but if we're in its point of view, I would say it's "alive" for the purposes of the story, because it providing the narration anthropomorphizes it, even if in a small way. After all, an accurate story told by a clock would be a blank page lol.
@FrostNinja922 күн бұрын
@@BrandonsWritingRoom I think we found your memoir title, lol. But for the clock, I mean even if you did anthropomorphize it, I would classify it as unliving. "The clock ticked on, angrily protesting Hugh's ignorance of the time." If you do something like that, I still see it as inanimate and unliving, in my opinion. But I'm not an author nor writer.

"Why, Mr. Bennett? Why, why? Why do you do it? Why? Why get up? Why keep writing? Do you believe you're writing for something? For more than your survival? Can you tell me what it is? Do you even know? Is it freedom or truth?! Perhaps peace?! Could it be for love?! Illusions, Mr. Bennett, vagaries of perception! Temporary constructs of a feeble human intellect trying desperately to justify an existence that is without meaning or purpose! And all of them as artificial as the Matrix itself, although only a human mind could write something as insipid as love! You must be able to see it, Mr. Bennett! You must know it by now! You can't write! It's pointless to keep writing! Why, Mr. Bennett?! Why?! WHY DO YOU PERSIST?!" "Because I choose to."

So you obviously really enjoy writing fantasy, but I'm curious, do you ever have plans on writing any science fiction, mystery, thriller, or other genres in the future? Have you tried any of those in your contemporary writing in recent years?
@BrandonsWritingRoomАй бұрын
Great question! When I was a young warthog, I definitely entertained science fiction, but the vibe I get about sci-fi in the present favors hard over soft, which necessitates me having to abide much more strongly by actual physics. Of course, there are science fiction stories that don't really rely on believability and are still great, like Arrival, so I'm sure if I had a sci-fi idea I was passionate about, I could make it work. As far as mystery and thriller go, I probably wouldn't do them in a realistic fiction story, but I do have plans for at least a fantasy thriller.

I haven't read a mystery and true crime in ages. I am one of those people that's obsessed with Serial Killers. I find how their mind works very fascinating. I use it to model antagonist in my books as well. Your observation of how the True Crime genre is marketed is factual and I am only realizing it now. This sound like it offers new perspective. If you want to experience 2nd person that reads brilliantly, try Spear cuts through water. Great Video!

I needed this, I've been stuck with some of my ideas as of late. Sometimes I get caught more with world building than what my character is doing. The latter can be tedious as you fight to avoid clichés. But, hey, at this point so many story arcs have similar traits, anything that goes too far against known plot lines can be challenging for an audience.
@BrandonsWritingRoom5 ай бұрын
I'm super happy to hear this helped you! I think you're spot on with your observation about similarities amongst stories. I think the idea of "subverting expectations" has largely gotten out of hand, and people are generally wanting a story that is similar to what they have already enjoyed. Tropes exist because we expect certain aspects from different genres. But I also know it's easy to get caught up in that feedback loop. I used to get really hung up on needing to be 100% "original," but all that did was make it harder to get any actual writing finished.

Just finished Elantris this morning! Definitely overall enjoyed the book (my first Sanderson book), but I definitely felt like it was about 130 pages too long-or perhaps the 130 or so pages focused on the *wrong things*. I would have preferred the climax/falling action of the book to have more meat. I think some of those really tense action scenes at the end could have benefited for extra marination. There were a lot of hung lanterns at the middle and beginning that informed the end, and I'm not sure all of them got enough of a hint before the end to feel like a well oiled machine was running. For example, I knew Aiden was going to be important for the end, but I didn't know *how* and he just kinda reappears to be relevant when the plot needs him to. It 100% makes sense why he's where he needs to be, but I think overall the end definitely shows Brandon moving the pieces a bit more than it feeling like the pieces are moving themselves.

I love these books so much. I began reading them when I was twelve. I was able to find them at my public library narrated by Brian Jacques (without a full caste) Can't find that version anywhere now. Still reading the series 20 years later, I've just started it over with my 50-year-old husband. He loves them as much as I do. So yes, these books are truly timeless. I cannot convey how much these books mean to me. They were a safe harbor in the midst of turmoil. I could always go to Redwall Abbey for comfort, safety, friendship and warmth. Seriously, I get so emotional just thinking of these books.

I discovered the TV show on PBS & then found out about the books. Around 2000 was about the height of its relatively short lived popularity, so I was glad the local libraries, school libraries, book stores & book fairs had all the books between them. The first one I got was Taggerung, but the first one I finished was Triss. I had a lot of trouble forcing my way through the long sections of poetic descriptions of food or environment at first, but made myself finish the one about a year later. Eventually ended up with the entire series at home & spent from ages 11-15 reading the whole series on a loop over & over each school year, adding each new one as they came out.

I actually am reading a new book! I usually get my book recommendations from you, so having some new and different is... new and different! I'm reading Akarnae by Lynette Noni. It was a free book on Audible, and I was out of stuff to listen to, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I'm only on chapter 9, and so far it's a very paint-by-numbers YA Fantasy story about a 16 year old girl who is accidentally transported to an alternate realm. The only person who can help her get back is conveniently gone for the length of a school year, so she enrolls at the Akarnae Academy for the Gifted. So far, there have been very few shenanigans so far, but the author has set up some foreshadowing that our main character is more than she seems. It appears to be part of a 4 book series, but if this book turns out to be a Harry Potter clone, I don't plan on finishing the series.
