I like that you called it nutrient “river” technique.

BTW, I purchased the course. I started my system on 11/30, and I’m a week or two away from my first harvest. When I build my next system, I’m going to use 2” bulkheads to increase the flow from rail to rail and to prevent the roots from stopping the flow and causing the rails to overflow. I had a small leak because the roots clogged the 4” risers. This caused the water level in the first rail to rise and overflow through the plant sites. Also, I think I had the pump turned up too much. I’ve since dialed the pump back. Anyway, it’s a great system.

I think a floating raft system is the easiest system regarding work/material to reward. Except maybe for large plants like tomatoes it got the same advantage seed->harvest, no power as ur river system but cheaper.

you did lots of trial and error. Love how you have done it from start to finish in one system. Thanks for your knowledge.😁

Have you ever tried to use a wick cord instead of trying to adjust the water level? I am wondering if that would be a good idea.

Do you have any videos that talk about how much vertical space is needed for different kinds of plants? I'm bulding a 4"x4" square rail system from the plans you have, and I'm setting it up on a wire rack shelf. I'm just not sure how to space the shelves out accordingly. I'm trying to grow strawberries on my bottom two rails, leafy greens on the second, herbs on the third, and on the top shelf I have enough space to fit grow trays and nursery trays between the lights and the shelf. I'm going to try to use that top shelf for microgreens and baby plants that are grown from seed. I just wish I knew how much space is needed between the tops of the full grown plants and the lights. I want them to all have enough space to grow to their full potential without getting burned by the LED lights.

My only issue with kratky is if I want a successive harvest I have to have multiple bins. When It comes to resetting those bins I have to scrub them all and get refill them and there is a little waste nutrients in the bottom of the bin at the end of a cycle. I use 11 Gallons of water per Rubbermaid bin for a total of 8 bins. I have to add coco coir for 8-10 holes for what ever I choose to grow. 88 Gallons of water to measure and fill and 8 bins to clean is not fun and I have to weigh out 39 grams from 3 bads in ratio of nutrients for each bin when I grow lettuce during the long winter. Not to mention fill all the net pots with fresh coco coir if aphids show up (even in the middle of the winter!! I don't know how). Aphids killed about 30 of my jalapeno plants and another 20 bell pepper and hot cherry plants I had waiting for early spring planting (I usually plant them during a 3 day overcast or rainy week). One pro is that if the power goes out in a winter storm ( we often have power outages) there are no air or water pumps that need to run so the plants are still fine.

Some good points, but a lot of those issues with NFT are only a problem if you're using a system made from vinyl gutters and the like. And I get. the idea of wanting to maximize the use of your available space, but again if the system is properly thought out and built you will be maximizing the available room you. have anyway. NFT also has it's place for "certain crops" vs others. Look for plants with relatively small rot systems, greens, some brassicas, even peas if you design a good support trellis. I however wouldn't use the best NFT system on the planet to grow big fruiting plants like tomatoes or squash.

None of these issues are actually issues. If you're going to scale up another method you still need bigger reservoirs, bigger pumps, more nutes, and more space. If you're concerned about light efficiency use different size containers in three stages (seedling, early veg, bloom), if the issue is spills any container can spill. And as far as vertical goes, if you're willing to give up some horizontal real estate you can make a short wide set up instead of tall and narrow or even use long pipes as containers and stay vertical. The only real issues with kratky are nutrient imbalances from not understanding how the nutrients will concentrate, and over thinking it.

Building my system in a carpeted area. How concerned do i need to be about potential leakage from the fence post covers (assuming i use silicone)? Is it worth building square or for watertight safety, should i rather use pvc round piping? I can't afford to have any leakage whatsoever and i don't have any other space to grow in (I live in NYC and the only domain i have a say over is my bedroom)

This video provides such a fresh perspective on the challenges of using NFT systems for hydroponics. 🌱 It's great to see someone sharing real-world insights and practical experiences instead of just the hype. Thank you for highlighting these important considerations-it’s really helpful for those of us exploring hydroponic setups! 🙌
